Ron, Congrats on the tag and a nice ram. Great horn character. Ram must have been a very obstinate bully Of course you need to give an autopsy report detailing the Berger VLD performance. Doug

Ron, Actually in Kachina Village. I took a Model 70 SG in 300WSM and had it rebarreled in 6.5 WSM. PacNor 1-9" polygonal. Kirby Allen in MT did the work. A 6.5 RSAUM like you are thinking or 6.5 RCM would be nice also. I would think the 6.5 RCM would be close to the 6.5-284 you already have. Seth out in Parks made a couple of accurrate 6 RSAUMs. Eric at Ruffs has one. Doug~RR

    .257 weatherby mag and RETUMBO

some googling for you: http://www.reloadersnest.com/frontpage.asp?CaliberID=35 http://www.weatherby.dk/forumdisplay.php?f...desc&page=3 http://forums.cabelas.com/showthread.php?t...ghlight=retumbo Looking for suggested load data for Nosler 110 Accubond with Retumbo powder. Only data I have is from the Speer #14 reloading manual, shows the following: 87 gr bullet - 74 - 78c grains retumbo 100 gr bullet - 71 73 grains retumbo 120 gr bullet - 65 - 69 grains retumbo With these guidelines I could probably start out with 68 - 71 grains Retumbo with the 110 accubond.

Ron, Welcome. One would have to look at ballistic minutia to come up with a better coues cartridge than the 257 WBY. Very flat and very tolerable recoil. Only negative would be having to buy Weatherby factory ammo $$$ if not a handloader. Just as flat and near equal wind drift with bullet of near equal SD, within a couple of inches for all) considering the 257 WBY, 264 WM, 7RUM, 300 RUM. Just that the WBY has em beat in recoil. Sure, one can go lighter in bullets to be flatter, or heavier to get less drift, but I tried to compare apples to apples with equal SD. ( Ballistic Tips in 115gr .257 vs 120gr .264 vs 140gr 7mm vs 165gr .308) But then I went with the 6.5 WSM for coues and antelope Doug~RR

    2010 Elk & Pronghorn Regs

There was no real change in the number of junior cow elk permits, except to add 15 to unit 1 to help stabilize the population and I think 3 went to the Hopis in 4A

That is what Terry Herndon was saying when he spoke in front of the commission. He thought most would be hunting in 5BS. G&F thought the better bulls were in 5BN, and now more could hunt in the northern part. Sounds like a loss of hunter and herd management to me. Ithought if one wanted to hunt 5BN, they should apply there. Last year there were 775 bull tags, now 831, not counting the Hopi tags. According to G&F, the bull:cow ratio is above mangement guidelines in 5B, so the permit numbers were increased. IIRC, they split 5B into N&S to manage the cow elk better. The cow elk hunts are still split into N&S.

Guess we will just take up fishing and listen to the wolves howl a sad cry that they ate themselves out of house and home.

A unit 1 tag would be nice in that the forest there is beautiful, almost what I envision as classic elk country with firs and aspens. Me, I often put in for that ugly PJ in 9

Take care of the meat guys!

What is sad in late September is seeing the archery elk in the back of the pick ups heading down I-17 back to Phoenix where it is still 100+degrees . Legs poking up in the air and hide still on . And the hunter probably thinks it tastes bad cuz the processor did a lousy job

    NM Regs Online

Since NR are limited to 12% guided and 10% unguided, I can't see how residents would be affected by the number of NR applying.

    NM Regs Online

New Application Fee The new nonrefundable application fee for residents is $10 and $27 for nonresidents. I can understand a difference in Res vs NR permit fees, but NM must be the first western state to charge differently on application fees. This can't be Taulman's scheme, cuz how would it benefit him since he outfits NR? RR

    GREAT day for mearns

Congrats on a good hunt. If you went to NAu HS, they would have canceled finals for you due to the snow .

Thanks for the quick responses! Hopefully I can swing in there on the way down to mearns hunt right after Christmas. Doug
