A good artiicle in the Daily Sun about the El Nino. Maybe we will get a heavy dose of white crystals all winter for the watershed, flora and fauna, skiers and WW boaters, not to mention hunters and fishers. http://azdailysun.com/articles/2009/12/07/...ront_208859.txt

TJ, Good to hear that it was not a ruptured appendix. Let us know what the Doc finds out about your intestine. Pray you fully recover quickly. Doug~RR

Congrats on some trophy tablefare and good time spent with your Dad. In field dressing/processing your bull, where did the initial shot impact that knocked him down, tissue damage and bullet performance. Doug~RR

Stan, Seeing the canyon with snow would be nice. I will have to look for a break in the blizzard, maybe Wednesday , to drive up there. Right now the wind is relatively calm and we have about 3/8" Guess change is on the way. Maybe Sedona will get some again. Sure hope the 2' comes to the forests. Cow elk hunters be cautioned. Radar is showing a good picture with lotsa moisture streaming out of San Diego/S CA. Doug~RR

Commission meeting broadcast on the net NOW
Red Rabbit replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Looks like the elk proposal was passed by a 4-1 vote. No change/action regarding the Oct rifle bull. Nov rifle bull will be in 5B, (not split into N&S anymore) and no action to move the archery bull back one week. The one change was to increase the permits in unit 1 by 125? cow permits to maintain the elk herd, rather than expand as proposed. -

Runningbird, I think that you will find the attitide towards archers by the commission becoming more favorable with the newer members. Ilene, If they simply switched the earlyrifle/muzz with eth archery, they would be in the same pre-rut situation archers are in, and that would not be good. Better to move the archery and early rifle both back a week, but as Brian mentioned, that steps on the successive hunts. See Chads list of hunt in the other thread about the Oct riflfe hunts, or look in the regs. As Chad posted, it is a continuous string of hunts in the fall. Doug~rr -

The commission contacted the Big Chino and were able to secure access and maintain permit numbers. Good news, now if the hunters will behave with good manners to maintain this situation. RR -
Commission meeting broadcast on the net NOW
Red Rabbit replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
The tag antelope tag numbers for 19 and Big Chino seems conflicting in results and fallout. The parties involved, hunters and wildlife both win and lose whichever way the commission decides today. I have a feeling that they will run with a reduced permit number. To maintain last years permit numbers would have disastrous results an the herds surrounding the ranch. Closing the ranch to hunting by removing it from the guidelines will create possibly irreparable ill-will, regardless of the message it sends. Doug~RR -
Tie a shed on her head and put some red lipstick on her nose...call her Rudi Seriously though, congrats on the good looking pup and may you enjoy many years behind her in the field. Doug (edited to reflect female sex of pup)

If you are willing to have the recoil of a 300WM, I would then suggest the 7RUM (Remington Ultra Mag). The 9 pound 300WM rifle with a 180gr bullet, 73gr powder at 3100fps will generate 28.6 ft lbs recoil. The 9 pound 7 RUM rifle with a 150 gr bullet, 88 gr powder at 3300fps will generate 29.1 ft lbs recoil. A 160 gr bulllet will generate about 29.3 ft lbs. I doubt you will notice the extra 0.5 ft lbs, but the 7 RUM will be noticeably flatter with more E. The Rem 700 Sendero is good accurate off-the-shelf rifle.

Yes sir. With my flat shooting 6.5 WSM, the extra drop from 700 to 725 yards is 8" That will throw you out of the chest of a coues deer with a center hold. If you do not correct for a ranged 725 yard shot at a 15* angle, you missed, as the horizontal distance is actually 700 yards. RR

If you compare similar bullets in the 7RM and 300WM, they are very similar in flight. The 160gr 7mm Acccubond and the 180gr 308 Accubond have reasonably close sectional densities, construction, shape, BC for comparison sakes. You can compare on the federal ammo site and see that they have nearly identical drop, drift and retained velocity at 500 yards. The 300 WM has a bit more retained E due to the increased mass. http://www.federalpremium.com/products/rifle.aspx As noted before the 7RM will have less recoil. The 7mm bullets do have a LR advantage to the 30 cal bullets regarding BC vs Weight vs Recoil http://www.appliedballisticsllc.com/index_...fullVersion.pdf

You can get fancy with the ACI http://www.snipertools.com/aci.htm or low tech with a weight on a string tied to a proctractor
