Camped out by Lockett Meadow last night so I could get and early start in the dark to hike up to the Inner Basin of the San Francisco Peaks to catch the sunrise. The wind of an upcoming front had been blowing all night, so the sweaty shirt was a little cool in the breeze at the destination after about an hour of blowing the carbon out of the lungs. Unfortunately, there were no clouds wisping in the wind, so I was stuck with a clear blue sky. The Inner Basin aspens seemed to be about 75% turned color to yellow and some yellow-orange. No reds yet. So if you would like to see the closest Arizona has to the San Juans of Colorado in the autumn splendor, a hike this weekend should catch the aspens in the Inner Basin at their peak color. If you get there real early, you might even hear an elk bugle. The aspens near Snow Bowl, Hart Prairie and the south slopes to Doyle Saddle are still 95% green. Doug~RR

Aspens on the San Francisco Peaks
Red Rabbit replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Non-hunting trip reports
Friday evening trip to Snowbowl showed that this area and southern slope may need another week to peak. Hope there will be some color rather than just turning brown as some are doing. A hike up the Weatherford trail to Doyle Saddle may be nice for those interested. Taken at the turn 1/4 mile before Snowbowl. -
Thanks Mike. They are still available. Sent you a PM. Doug

swarovski 15x56..need help with tripod
Red Rabbit replied to game hntr's topic in Optics and tripods
Will you be sitting or standing while glassing? Budget? Get a tripod with adjustable leg angles. Those K-mart cheapies with the support braces between the legs and center pole are terrible. Do a search inthe optics forum here for tripods. Some good discussions. Scoutm has a tripod for sale in the classifieds http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/in...showtopic=15354 Might consider the Velbon Sherpa that is in the CWT bookstore. http://www.coueswhitetail.com/bookstore/tr...ripod_heads.htm Other tripods to consider for sitting would be the Manfrotto 190 and Velbon LuxiL (I have this Luxi and like it for a lightweight sitting tripod) For standing, you will need a heavier. stiffer, taller tripod so you do not need to raise the center column. For a light head, I like the Manfrotto 700 RC2 The Jim White head and Outdoorsmans heads are real nice, but more $ -
That was a full day of fun!

A search for ZEN RAY on hunting, optics forums and bird forums will have a good smattering of threads such as: http://www.opticstalk.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=19083&PN=1

Someone please call the NM fire department. -
If these are the 120 Nosler Ballistic Tips in the 7RM, I would not be afraid to use them on cow elk. In response to silhouette, their jackets have been thickened and make a good game bullet.

Those Aberts are shaping up nice now for winter with the rust-colored back and growing the ear tassles. With the season open till Dec 31 now, there could be some prime pelts for mounts. How did they taste? Acorny? Piney? -

From Sedona Friday evening, since the moonrise over Cathedral Rock did not happen as planned due to the clouds blocking the sun on the rock, being a day late, and the moon rising too far north. With the clouds though, I figured there may be a sunrise, so I returned Saturday morn, but the sun didn't get to peak below the cloud bank. -
Many of the youth deer hunts begin next Friday, Oct 9. If you will be hunting coues, please send me your registration for the Coues contest by next Friday, if you have not entered already. Don't forget that there are special youth categories for best hunt story, smallest buck and largest coues buck. Thanks and have a great hunt! Coues Contest Details Doug

Glad there is an X on the map. One might not find that honey hole without it.

A couple of weeks high in the mountains of eastern Arizona is good for the soul. Bet the camp camaraderie was great. Doug~RR

considering the picture size, it must be one of those micro-breweries making skunky beer in a green bottle The bull is not micro-size however.

Early rifle or muzz hunt then?

Don't know if they would be able to tell the difference. The "cheese" inside the wrapper tastes like plastic anyways

Looks like a good time to map/GPS the structure for when the water rises again. Can the SCAT do some structure/habitat projects?
