Just go fishing at WhiteHorse, put the rifle in the boat along with the rods, and shoot that spike when he comes to water at the shoreline . Make it a cast and blast venture

FR 533 off 89A is the divide between 6B and 11M. It runs along the north side of Woody Ridge. You can take an atv up the powerline road to Casner, but not a full-size vehicle. Doubt a UTV would fit through the gate either. Do not know how "quiet" Woody Ridge is as the roads have not been blocked well lately. For elk or deer? I was told that there were few elk on woody ridge this past archery season.

New to Coues and to CouesWhitetail.com
Red Rabbit replied to ron b's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Ron, If you go scouting this weekend, take some good pics (wide panos) of the various areas you are considering (maybe not of your first choice though) and post them. We could look at them and help give you ideas how we would hunt them. Kinda like this, but pics with a wider angle to show more terrain. http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/in...showtopic=15387 or http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/in...c=12905&hl= -
New to Coues and to CouesWhitetail.com
Red Rabbit replied to ron b's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Ron, Welcome. Since you are new to coues hunting, possibly Duwane Adams glassing seminar http://www.arizonabiggamehunting.com/ would be of value to your young coues career. He would be a great source of info on hunting coues. Possibly you could also find someone from CWT.com with a 35A tag also and combine scouting trips or hunt together to increase the learning curve. Best of luck on your hunt. Doug~RR -
Since you are putting mule deer on the menu, I would choose the caliber that is capable, not marginal. Of those two, 243 would get the nod. The 243 is a screaming varmint round with the Remington loaded 75 grain V-tip (Hornady V-Max) and better for deer with 95/100 gr loads. Make sure the stock has a Sims or Decelerator pad, adjust the trigger, and he wears muffs so he does not hear any muzzle blast. All will help reduce/prevent flinching. With a Savage, you can also get extra barrels and swap them easily since they are attached with that ugly nut. A Savage with the Accu-trigger would be a better choice than the NEF, imo. So, a 223/22-250 and 243/308 barrel combination is do-able. http://www.savageshooters.com/ Doug~RR

Hector, Glad you enjoyed the BD dinner. Good luck on the Kaibab in a few weeks. Doug~RR

Not too many access points into 6B. Woody Mountain Road Fry Canyon Road off 89A ATV up Casner from Sedona FR 5308 off Garland Prairie south of Parks Volunteer canyon kinda seperates NAD from 6B

Hoppes #9 for copper fouling?
Red Rabbit replied to king4wd's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Which Hoppes 9 product? http://www.hoppes.com/ The regular Hoppes #9 Solvent that smells good is for powder fouling and good before using a copper remover. Hoppes 9 Benchrest Copper Remover might be what you are talking about and they say is safe to leave in the bore overnight as it is not ammonia based. http://www.hoppes.com/products/bench_rest9.html Montana Extreme 50BMG is good stuff. http://www.montanaxtreme.com/products/50_bmg_solvent.php -
The 2009 bonus point analyses for the deer, sheep, buffalo draws are downloadable from the AZGFD website. Data by hunt number for the 20% pass and regular 1-2 pass. http://www.azgfd.gov/eservices/BonusPointProcess.shtml Maybe that Dec Coues tag will come next year . Doug~RR

Have not hunted coues in 35a but have driven through it several times for mearns. The hills west of Parker Canyon lake look nice, as do the draws along 83 as you near Parker Canyon. Quite a few Coues in the record book from Canelo Hills. Good Luck. Let us know how your scouting and hunt go. "You never get a second chance to make a good first impression."

Here is a list of archery elk season start dates poached from another hunting site. Looks like the start date has shifted from the 3rd Friday to the 2nd Friday of September. 1995 9-15 1996 9-13 1997 9-12 1998 9-18 1999 9-17 2000 9-15 2001 9-14 2002 9-13 2003 9-12 one of the best ruts 2004 9-17 2005 9-16 2006 9-22 2007 9-14 2008 9-12 2009 9-11 In looking at the fall hunt calendar for unit 6A, there are only 2 weekends that do not have a hunt in 6A, those being Oct 9 and Nov 13. October 9 is the date starting the junior deer and javelina hunts in other units. Nov 13 is a start of mule deer hunts in other units. So many seasons, so little calendar to prevent overlap.

Congrats to James. Did you get the big bull tied up for Scottyboy? Doug~RR

Looks fairly symmetrical, aside from the fifths. Wonder what P&Y typical net will be. Doug~RR

I would not have anything of value visible in the cab, and cover what is in the camper shell, as a water jug or cooler may be tempting. Also, a Club on the steering wheel may be a deterrent, albeit not foolproof. I have not had a problem hunting in units 36 or 35 so far, knock on wood. There are usually some larger camps near the Elkhorn Ranch that may offer some group security.

Rica and I ventured into the park to do some shooting on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Sunday evening saw a few showers drift across the big ditch, which led to a bright orange cast to the sunset as seen from Cape Royal. The next morning led back to Cape Royal to catch the sunrise on Wotans Throne. The sun briefly peeked through the clouds before hiding again. With the early morning light gone, the road lead to Point Imperial for a few photos with less than optimum light. Doug~RR

2009 AZGFD Bonus Point Analysis
Red Rabbit replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
If you are not in the top BP group for the 20% pass, odds are slim. 199 applicants now with 13 BP for deer, but only 37 are residents. 556 with 12 BP now, and 80 are residents (data as of 7/29/09) You can bet that 12AWlate, 13A, 13B are their choices. Good luck. -
Nikon Monarch atb 12x56
Red Rabbit replied to shaft's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
If you are looking for some good high-powered coues glass at a real good price, you might strongly consider the Minox 15x58ED that CameraLand has for about $550. http://www.cameralandny.com/optics/minox.pl?page=62132 Doug~RR -
I would consider the right-eye dominace to be the controlling factor. If he start with a RH bow set at a lower poundage, it will help overcome the initial awkwardness of shooting with his wrong-hand. At first, it will likely feel unnatural to him, so it will take a while to get used to. If he closes his right eye to shoot left-handed, he will be losing important peripheral vision and depth perception.

There was a Shooting on the North Rim
Red Rabbit replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Non-hunting trip reports
Oak, A UV filter will help reduce the haze in the pics that your eye does not see. It will also help protect your lens and will be better/easier to clean than the lens itself. I have ordered a new digital multi-coated UV filter. They say the MC will reduce lens flare and ghosting on the camera sensor. The new UV filter is $70, whereas the old cheapy was under $20. Another very useful filter is a circular polarizer. I had once bought a cheap neutral density filter from Best Buy so I could do some "soft" waterfall/stream shots, but it gave a color cast to the images and they were not as sharp. So I invested a little more and got a better ND filter. Heliopan and B&W are top notch, but I am using Hoya (they seem harder to clean though to remove streaks). Like anything, you usually get what you pay for. Thanks all for the comments. Doug~RR -
Congrats on a coveted tag. The AZGFD gives some useful MP milepost numbers on the Sasabe highway to access the various canyons. http://www.azgfd.gov/h_f/hunting_units_36c.shtml Be prepared to hike at least an hour to get back into the canyons. Some of the hunt stories from last years coues contes are 36C, so you can tell what to expect terrain wise. Solano, Redondo, Sabino, Thomas are some of the better canyons in the northern half of the unit. Are you hunting with someone who has hunted 36c and coues before? Duwane Adams book that is in the bookstore here might be a good read for a beginning coues hunter. Be sure to have your binos mounted on a tripod for good glassing. Duwane also has a glassing DVD.

New rifle sighting in question
Red Rabbit replied to Loner's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
For a custom barrel, I might consider break-in. But there is one barrel manufacturer, Shilen, though who says it's needless and puts up a procedure to apppease the customer. http://www.shilen.com/faq.html#question10 From Hart Barrels FAQ http://www.hartbarrels.com/ .... What do you recommend for barrel break-in? We do not believe that a break in procedure is required with our barrels. If you follow our normal cleaning procedure, outlined in this brochure, you should not have any problems with your new rifle. You always want to clean your rifle as often as your course of fire will allow. If you have time to shoot one and clean, that would be fine, but we personally do not feel it is necessary. Please be sure to only use the cleaning solvents listed in our cleaning instructions. http://www.kriegerbarrels.com/RapidCat/cat...;CompanyId=1246 http://www.bartleinbarrels.com/BreakInCleaning.htm A factory barrel will not likely have the inside polish/smoothness of a custom, and hence may foul more. For foulers and easier cleaning, one might consider Ultra Bore Coat (especially muzzleloaders) http://www.ultracoatingsinc.com/ubc.aspx Also, See the barrel mfg's cleaning instructions and the USE OF A GOOD BORE GUIDE. For a factory, barrel, I would clean it well at first and go shoot like normal with no break-in. make sure the action and scope mount screws are tight. If the rifle is a shooter, I would clean it well to prep for Ultra Bore Coat and put that in the tube then shoot to cure the UBC. Sight in, Head to the hills and Enjoy. Doug~RR -
