I watched a little. Sounded like they will be going to online boat registration, license purchases and hunt applications, but may take a year. Commissioner Martin also said that they need to look at the 20% draw where one can draw their second choice and not first choice in the max point pool, and there still be permits for the first choice remaining after the 1-2 pass, or even as leftovers.

Since the weather was unseasonably nice, a trip to Big and Crescent Lakes in eastern AZ was warranted this past weekend to flyfish for trout and possibley hunt some blue grouse. The fishing reports indicated the rainbows had put on some mass over the summer, and the brookiies were in spawning colors. Spent Saturday on Crescent Lake. Had to share it with only one other fly fisherman and lots of coots. Caught six chunky rainbows that averaged 12"-14". No brookies though. That evening, I drove over to Big Lake. One fisherman caught a nice 22" cutthroat on a small black ant pattern fishing it submerged, and also a fes other 14"-18" rainbows. The other flycaster had made it to South Cove, and caught a 17" bow wading from shore. The evening sky turned light pinkish purple over Big Lake. Hustling back to the campsite above Crescent, the last of the light was soothing. Sunday morning fishing was delayed as a few remaining aspens called to the camera. Rica pauses for the camera during her morning Frisbee throws. Shouldn't we be hunting quail? Finally made it to the west side of Big Lake about 8:30am to launch the toon. Caught 2 cutthroats right away on an olive simi-seal leach. Anchored the pontoon boat off a point and caught several 12" rainbows on #14 peacock nymphs and Prince nymphs. Figured it was time for lunch and let Rica stretch her legs, but the drift back to the launch was fortunately delayed by a 19" bow that took a #14 Prince. Doug~RR

Foxpro lists 2 bear cub distress calls.

Jay, A fawn in distress call would work. I have called in a few in 6B by wailing on a Circe jackrabbit mouthcall nonstop. The key is nonstop as they supposedly have a short attention span. Doug ~RR

Mark, Congrats on a nice trophy and some great eating. Philip Soucy is probably the best cat taxidermist. I'll send you a PM. Doug~RR

Had these sunflowers at Bonito Park backlit by the sun and the SF Peaks in the background. Did not notice until I got home that the top flowers were spent.

Have we really started to quote Spanish philosopher's on a hunting site. What the heck have we become Meditations on Hunting by Jose Ortega y Gasset Meditations on Hunting is the most quoted book in sporting literature. It is the finest work on the essence and ethics of hunting. Today when both hunting and fishing are often condemned, Meditations takes on an even greater significance. Ortega points out that life is a dynamic interchange between man and his surroundings. He explains that hunting is part of man's very nature, that "hunting is a universal and impassioned sport...it is the purest form of human happiness. The essence of hunting or fishing involves a complete code of ethics of the most distinguished design. The sportsman who accepts the sporting code of ethics keeps his commandments in the greatest solitude with no witnesses or audience other than the sharp peaks of the mountain, the stern oak, and the passing animal." "If you haven't read this legendary little book, you might wonder if an essay originally written by a Spanish philosopher as an introduction to a friend's big game hunting memoirs could have any relevance to a modern bird hunter. I'd say it's not only "relevant', it's absolutely essential reading for any thoughtful hunter and fisherman. ...and now Wilderness Adventures has brought out what I think will be the standard: a beautiful slipcased edition, bound in fine cloth, with excellent pencil illustrations by Eldridge Hardie and a new foreword by Datus Proper. It's the one to own." -- Steve Bodio, Shooting Sportsman -

Jim, But at least my misses will be better looking. I can miss just as easy with an 870. It's all about stock fit, and for me it's keeping that head down so I don't shoot over the birds. Only a month before quail season! Doug~RR -
“Hey, you want to go fishing at Lake Powell Saturday?” Sure, it was the second weekend of archery deer season and it was going to be over 100 degrees this weekend, but surely I’d catch more fish than see deer. The alarm went off at 2AM and we were on our way north with caffeinated kidneys. We were on the water at Wahweap a little after sunrise. Once past the marina jammed with houseboats, the water was scanned for any surface activity. Reports were that the stripers were boiling by chasing schools of shad to the surface. One was spotted, but a boat was already on it. With no more activity, we decided to go through the channel cut on the east side of the pictured rock into Warm Creek. Once in Warm Creek, we scanned the water’s surface with the binoculars for any boils. We looked and cruised and looked, but no striper activity was seen. O heck, that shoreline looked good for smallmouth. So we grabbed the other rods and cast the rocky shoreline for smallmouth. It was not long before they obliged our grub jigs or worm drop-shots. Some bass were busting shad, and a quick cast to the widening rings usually brought a strike. As we worked the worms and grubs in 20’ of water, a boil was seen behind us in the open water. Just as we were approaching the surface activity, a pleasure boater sped right over the school’s edge, ending the feeding activity. Figuring that they may still be around, I cast to where the school was and let the Rattle Trap sink for 15 seconds before reeling in. Sure enough, a 20” striper obliged and fought against the brand new rod’s virginity. Further casts brought no strikes, and the fish-finder showed nothing underneath. So it was back to the shoreline to tempt more smallmouth. As the sun peaked in the sky overhead, the air temp and lack of fish activity directed us back to the dock for the drive home to Flagstaff. A good day was had with plenty of good scenery, company and livewell of bass. Doug~RR

I don't know if demo's are considered new for this purpose or not. They do carry the full warranty so just maybe. It's worth checking with Doug @ Cameraland to see what he thinks. Doug responded on another forum that the demos and samples are not eligible for the rebates

Jimena is potentially tracking towards the Baja. Sure could use a lot of its moisture here. http://www.weather.com/newscenter/hurrican...rricane_tracker http://www.weather.gov/view/national.php?prod=HUR

Larry, the bottom of the coupon says for "new", but the terms and conditions on the zeiss website do not specifically say. www.zeiss.com/sports Doug

Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44 Rapid-Z 800 for $750 after rebate. http://www.cameralandny.com/optics/zeiss.p...estrapidz521430 Does not have a big 50mm objective to require high scope rings that pulls your cheek off the stock. 4.5x would be magnification low enough for elk in the trees. 14x with the RZ 800 for longer shots in more open country. Sharper optics than Leupold, although the Leupold is a trimmer package. The Leupold VX3 4.5-14x40 w/ B&C reticle would be another good choice.

WOT, What kind of ranges, terrain will the scope be used in? On what rifle? Is the rifle to be carried in a scabbard? Do you want turrets or a ballistic plex reticle? What isyour budget? RR
