    chiggers

Kent, Those cedar gnats like the sock lines also, and you can sometimes see a swarming ring of black gnats chewing on your leg there. Must be the extra moisture there. I was itchy for a week after those pesty bites. A friend in college was from Chigger Ridge, just east of Dallas TX. Doug

    chiggers

Instead of chiggers, could y'all have been bitten by those tiny no-see-ums called cedar gnats like we had at the Marshall Lake camp? OFF/DEET works as a prevention. Hydrocortisone cream helps with the itching to some degree. http://watchingtheworldwakeup.blogspot.com...01_archive.html Here is some more info about cedar gnats from CNF: Literature references indicate that no-see-um species found in Arizona and the southwest are of the genus Culicoides (family Ceratopogonidae). Adult no-see-ums are less than 1/16-inch long, can easily pass through normal window screens, and resemble a smaller, more compact version of the mosquito. They are most active in early mornings and evenings of mid to late summer. Mouth parts are well developed with elongated mandibles adapted for blood sucking. Both males and females feed on flower nectar but only the female feeds on blood. She must consume blood for her eggs to mature and become viable. As mentioned previously, bites of these tiny flies are painful and irritating. The bite usually starts as a small red welt (1/8” or so) or water-filled blister that itches. Once scratched, the welt can break open and bleed, but the itching usually continues. Allergic or sensitive individuals may develop long-lasting painful and itchy lesions. Bite treatments recommended by some dermatologists include topical cortisone creams and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Persons having severe reactions should consult a physician or dermatologist. Called noseeum or cedar gnat... depends on who you talk to. They need a small amount of barely moist soil to breed. They usually hatch in early to mid June and last about a month. The female is the biter and needs animal blood for the eggs. A juniper (what locals call cedar but is not) is a perfect place for them to hatch in the soil. Also they have a short range of only about 40 feet and never venture too far out. RR

    Interesting Conclusion

One site (about.com) gave the figure that 4318 troops have died in Iraq since the invasion in 2003, as of 6/24/09. Another site said that in 2005 alone, 1.2 million Americans were murdered on US soil via abortion (about 1 in 5 pregnancies were terminated). http://www.reuters.com/article/domesticNew...722176020080117 So, it is far safer to be a soldier in Iraq than to be a fetus in the US.

    Interesting Conclusion

Looking at the blog you linked, and its linked Forbes article with 2006 data, Detroit was #1 with 47.3 homicides/100,000/yr. DC was #7 with 29.1/100,000/yr. Iraq would be 8.4/100,000/yr Guess we could move to Plano, TX as it was last on the list of the cities wth pops of 75k+ http://www.forbes.com/2007/11/08/murder-ci...1108murder.html

    Sunrise 3D Shoot***

Ilene, The way our group shot poorly on Sat, I commented on collecting the fresh strawberries to make some strawberry daquiris afterwards. I ate quite a few strawbs a couple years ago while waiting to shoot. Doug~RR

    Interesting Conclusion

Now divide that by 60 months (5 years) to get 0.7 Iraqi civilian deaths/100,000/month. Compare this 0.7 to the 60 US soldier deaths/100,000/month and 80.6 DC/100,000/month (figures given by OP)

NRS- A summer job in the WM would be great. What did you do? Siwash- the winner in our senior class turned in a 199 for 20 targets on Sunday's round. On Saturday, the high in our group of 5 was 162. Do you have any more pics from the course? ehunt- You're a brave man to take your dogs up on the chair. My dog probably would have bailed off. Thanks for the compliments on the pics. Good scenery makes taking them easier. Did anyone graze on the wild strawberries growing on the ski runs? RR

    Interesting Conclusion

The NEJM data is also over a 5 year period, while the OP data is over 22 months

Sorry, I did not notice you, nor see any other spotlighters. I was down in Greer when the heavy rain hit the mountain Friday. Good luck on your elk hunt. Sure is beautiful country. RR

Premonsoon photos from the Covert II

That bull might end up pretty cool looking. Another tip for the trail cam tips thread on how to set up cameras? "Place camera above the high water mark" That tank filled well and the monsoons really just started. The mearns will be happy.

    Sunrise 3D Shoot***

Aaron, Yes, the Willard Springs shoot is the 18 & 19th. If you get to go to a 3D shoot, bring your rangefinder and shoot with an experienced one to help tutor you at the start. Arrows are too expensive to trash. ABA has the Bowhunter Happening at Sunrise on the 25 & 26th http://www.arizonabowhunters.org/Triple%20...009/FPBHH09.pdf Doug~RR

Aaron, Will you be able to bring that new bow up to Flagstaff in 2 weeks for our 3D shoot at Willard Springs? Doug~RR
  17. Forget those graphs and charts on your factory ammo boxes. For those lucky to have a new rifle, scope or load, here are some free software downloads to use. You will need the BC of your bullet, chtonograph your bullet, and measure the scope to bore centerlines. If you have a plain reticle and need holdover data, Point Blank would be good. You can also use it to determing MPBR maximum point blank range, for various kill zone sizes and set your zero accordingly. http://www.huntingnut.com/index.php?name=n...ticle&sid=3 If you like the easy and flexible route of turrets, you may like these programs (trjectory programs near the bottom). It will make your drop/come-up charts to print for you also. http://www.eskimo.com/~jbm/calculations/calculations.html Anyone else have some handy free stuff off the net?

    ****NOT MY HERO****

One would think that the hunting magazine editors certainly would know the ramifications of publishing detailed hunting locations. You can read some stories and barely know what state the hunt was in, but I guess this was not the case. RR

    A Truly Splendid Place

Jay, I have not worked on them. A neighbor (professional photographer) helped demonstrate with one photo with some layers to spot sharpen, tone, saturate etc. My goal is to get 12 good photos from Northern Arizona to make a 2010 calendar. Doug
  21. Yearning for a photo trek rather than a fly fishing venture this weekend, I pointed the truck north from Flagstaff to the Vermilion Cliffs along the Utah border. Awoke Saturday morning to cool temperatures and a hazy sunrise. Globe Mallow on the Rocks Upper Badger Creek. Was told that there are Chukar at the base of the cliffs. With the morning sun reaching washing heights, I steered to the destination of purpose. The road would lead atop the cliffs and sludge in 4wd through 20 miles of sandy two-track to reach this prime photo location. I figured the mid-day would allow me to plan an evening shoot and a that of Sunday morning. A hoodoo in the making just 3 miles along the way. A few unusual early summer rains must have spurred a bloom. Normally June sees 100 degrees here, but this weekend was a pleasant 80* The white sandstone rocks have the texture of cerebral cortex, hence the name of BRAIN ROCK After a light shower, the sun returned to light this neat channel. I was lucky to spend time in the evening with a professional landscape photographer in the main basin as the sun made its way to the horizon. The afternoon storm left us with some nice clouds in the sky. The sun disappeared somewhere under Utah in the distance. I turned around from the western view and caught this pastel view. Sunday morning broke to a vermillion sky and only 9 images left on the flashcard. 4 MB is not enough in a place like this. A morning hoodoo. Some razor edge rock. Must be the notochord to the medulla. Finally, a lone pinyon bonsai in the swirl. This was truly a splendid place. Doug~RR

    They're Cashing Checks

For sure, the $7.50 G&F takes out is much less than Obama would garnish, and for a better cause w/ G&F too!

Yeah, but ...you keep selling all your good dogs as pups and only have Rica left to hunt behind

That one could be someone (who wishes to remain nameless and anonynous as a "rejected" soul), anyone who gets lucky, everyone (who put in for a 100% draw), or just "one" (being "the loneliest number" from Three Dog Nightmusic days.
