The price of Swaros and Leicas may be more than some can afford. I have been reading some good things about some ED binos coming from China, so want to pass along the info. They have 99% of the Euro optics at 1/3 the price. I have the Leica Duovids now, but am being strongly tempted by some of the 8x43 ED Zen Rays for about $350 for the truck and woods where a wide field of view may be needed. Here are some links for reviews of the ProMasters (sold by Doug at CameraLandNY), Zen Rays and Hawkes. http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/u...e/1#Post2736219 http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/u...rue#Post2736232 http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/u...rue#Post2692968 http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/u...rue#Post2631001 http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/u...rue#Post2585793 http://birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=122545 http://birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=122869

Some more thoughts on the Kaibabs. Our test occured in bright daylight, where the view through lesser optics will sometimes appear bright enough. We did not test at low light. Also, with 15x binos, one is generally looking for detail at LONG range, usually into shadows (picking out deer in the brush or judging antlers), so one would want/need the best resolution/brightness/contrast possible. Redoing our test after sunset and at long range should lead to important/pertinent evaluations. The results may stay the same, or change. Doug~RR

Sierra Club wants lion tag to auction
Red Rabbit replied to billrquimby's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Seems stupid as lion tags are OTC. Why would G&F want to be a part of a SC fundraiser for their adversary? SC could have all of their loony members buy a lion tag to support G&F -
where are all the deer hunters?
Red Rabbit replied to bonuspointjohn's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I hope the Conservation BP goes through this time. I was for it last time also and was surprised it did not go through. -
The Conquests are multicoated and phase-corrected, but no fluoride glass. http://www.zeiss.com/c1256bcf0020be5f/Cont...525754d004f719f Casey must be thinking of the Zeiss Victory FL binos http://www.zeiss.com/c1256bcf0020be5f/Cont...525754d004f719f

where are all the deer hunters?
Red Rabbit replied to bonuspointjohn's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I helped on a fence removal project in unit 9 a few years ago. The WM was present and was a great source of info for future hunts. Why don't more people help on projects? * Apathy- don't care to return to the habitat and species. Like most groups, less than 10% of the members do the work and most people are not members. * Lack of commitment- let some other activity be an excuse to supercede the project * The attitude that my license fee is supposed to pay for it * Not knowing about it- not involved in a critter group or internet forum to hear about the project. If one is not a member of a group or receiving emails from G&F, one is likely ignorant of the project. * lack of travel $, distance to the project, other family events. * Do not feel a tie to the unit (or hunt the unit) the project is in -
Be sure to get a unit with the newer, High-sensitivity WAAS receivers that get a signal better under the trees and in canyons. With the Garmin units, there will usually be an H in the model designation.

Scott, I have the MysteryRanch NICE frame with load sling. The NICE frame, load sling and crew cab would be a good setup. Much better suspension system than the CampTrails aluminum frame or Coleman Nylon frame I used before. I carried out my whole antelope (less guts, hooves and hide) and hunting gear last fall on the NICE and bag setup. The MR carries the weight better than the Black Creek Alaskan I have. The Kifaru G2 Hauler is supposed to be real good, as is the Granite Gear Flatbead for a packframe. http://www.kifaru.net/longhunter_hauler.html http://www.granitegear.com/products/backpa...tusflatbed.html Doug~RR

3rd Annual Flagstaff Area CWT.com Get-Together!!!!!
Red Rabbit replied to Lance's topic in CouesWhitetail.com Get-togethers!
A BIG thanks to Lance for hosting the fun event and providing tasty elk burgers and brats for dinner! And who put those trees in front of the archery targets??? Here are some photos from around the Friday night campfire. Are campfires really hypnotic? Do you want those marshmallows golden brown or charcoal black? An insect with extra "eyes" that would snap when its back was pushed on. -
I was very surprised at the Vortex 15x56 Kaibabs and how sharp they were. Until we looked at the resolution chart, one could hardly tell a difference between the three binos by looking a clusters of pine needles on a distant tree about 100 yards away. While jumping from one bino to the other, once I would prefer the Leica 10+15x50 Duovids and the next time the Swaro 15x56. Another viewer preferred the Swaro, and a third preferred the Leicas. The main difference was the bluish cast of the Swaro which some may prefer and others wanting a more neutral tone offered by the Leicas and Vortex. The Vortex had equal contrast and brightness withe the Swaros and Leicas. As Dennis noted with the resolution chart, the Swaro was about 1/2 block better than the Leicas, and the Vortex was about one full block behind the Leica. looking at the edge of a skylined tree trunk, all had the same amount of a greenish color fringe to my eyes. The Kaibabs also held sharpness to the edge the same amount as the Swaros and Leicas. The Kaibab's lens tubes could be folded closer together than the Swaros or Leicas (a consideration for those with closely set eyes), but the eyecups themselve were larger in diameter that those of the Swaros and Leicas. For $1200, the Kaibabs are a best buy for 15x binos, imo. The big surprise to me was how the Zen ED 8x43 compare to the Swaro 8.5x42 ELs that Kevin/Peloncillo brought. Handheld, there was little apparent difference in view. Tripod mounted looking at the resolution chart, the Swaro was able to resolve only one block better. The Swaro had a smoother focus wheel and eyecups that moved in/out with a higher tolerance. $360 vs $1699. I did not check for flatness for field in these comparisons. Dennis and Kevin, thanks for lending your binos for comparison. Doug~RR

I was in Bull Basin Archery here in Flagstaff and was told that Hoyt will be releasing a new bow in the Hawk series called the Turbohawk. It will have the same cams and limbs as the Alphamax 32, but on a cast magnesium riser that will yield a 3 3/4 pound bow. price will be about $550, but there will be a $50 rebate also. I have test shot the Alphamax 32 and really liked the draw over the Bowtechs (except possibly the General). The new bows should ship around the beginning of July. Looked on ArcheryTalk and found some similar info. http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/showthread.p...%2Bhoyt+%2Bhawk Figured I'd share for those yearning for a new bow and cringe at the flagship prices. Bow is not on the Hoyt website yet. Doug~RR

I had a chance to look at the Kaibabs this evening at Bull Basin Archery. They appear to hinge/fold closer together than the Swaros and Leicas, so those of you with close eyes may appreciate this. The eyecups seemd slightly larger in diameter than my Leica, and they were rounded on the edges. Optics seemed sharp in the center, but did not do any comparison against a Swaro or Leica. Catclaw, any observations yet? Doug~RR

I did not see any bighorns there. That would have been pleasing. Didn't see any deer either. But mainly I was looking for photogenic rock and deep sand in the road. RR

3rd Annual Flagstaff Area CWT.com Get-Together!!!!!
Red Rabbit replied to Lance's topic in CouesWhitetail.com Get-togethers!
Dennis, Google shows Doug White to be a senator in Ohio. I believe Josh Epperson hauls those types of products in his pooper-pumper truck. (Betcha "Jim White" was the intention in MM's post) RR -
Jay, North and South Coyote Buttes areas look to be pretty locations. Need to buy a permit for the south, and be drawn for the north, with like 10% odds. When it ools in the fall, would like to head to South Coyote. I helped on a 12B hunt above the cliffs many years ago, but did not see the area in my photos. Are you going to be at Marshall Lake this weekend? Doug

Jim, What effects might the Elk Horn fire have on the coues population? Will the fire line move them out or will they circle back behind if posssible? How soon will the deer return to the burned areas? To what extent will they return? Effect on fawn survival and general deer health due to burning of forage until greening occurs? Any expected change in habits/patterns? I located a proposed study on collared mule deer after the Rodeo-Chedeski fire, but an email to Stan was returned undeliverable. I was wondering if any results were published. http://www.azgfd.gov/w_c/research_rodeoche...mule_deer.shtml Thanks, Doug

Another Trail Camera gone... any thoughts?

What a sweet "two-for" deal for the thief. He gets a camera AND a Rhino. Seems the cost:reward ratio for the original owner is a little high. -
Baboquivari- Elk Horn Fire Effect?
Red Rabbit replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I know the long term effect will be a big positive, but what about the short term- 0 month-6 months?
