minimum caliber rifle for deer
Red Rabbit replied to BigBfever's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Lark, The 07-08 regs do title the fall hunt as "General Turkey" and allow centerfire, as seen in the "legal methods of take" printed above the hunt numbers. The 08-09 regs title the fall hunt as "Limited Weapon-Shotgun Shooting Shot Turkey" and allow shotgun and bow, but no longer centerfire or magnum rimfire. Just need to make sure hunters are aware of the changes and do not go out with a 22WMR or centerfire for fall turkey. Doug~RR -

Some friends around the corner took their neighbor's boy out. They called in 3 gobblers Friday evening and he got his first tom. Saw the hunt video last night. Pretty neat. RR

Dennis, That is a big difference. I plugged 3600 fps, bc= 0.267, weight= 55, temp=70, elev=5000' into PointBlank. It gives 1924 fps at 600 yards. JBM/Eskimo calculates 1880 fps The back of my Nosler #5 shows 1625fps For grins, Federal shows the E of various 22LR from 100-130 FtLbE at the muzzle Doug -
Seems a long way, 50 miles to Payson, to haul the bass in a livewell with no fresh circulation. What is done to reduce the mortality rate?

Regarding the 22-250 for deer, there are better choices, IMO. ie 243, 257 Roberts, 260 Rem for those wanting light recoil and better deer performance. A 55 grain Ballistic Tip at 3600 fps will have retained 1900 FPS and 450 FtLbs Energy at 600 yards. Enough speed to expand the bullet, but would raise question to penetration if required to go through a shoulder or paunch. I have seen a 55 gr Hollow point blow up and penetrate only 1" into the shoulder muscle of a deer at 100 yards. This goes to proper bullet choice. Most 22 caliber bullets are lightly constructed for varmints. Better bullets like the 60 Nosler Partition will require a faster twist than the common 1-14. I have shot 40 grain HP at 420 yards at soda cans and have found a bullet laying atop the sand bank. The bullet was totally reloadable with no expansion at all. I have seen a coues taken at 400 yards with a 53 gr TSX from a 223 WSSM. Penetration through the chest, no shoulders. -

legal methods of take for turkey Spring Tukey: Shotgun shooting shot, crossbow, or bow and arrow. NO centerfire rifles, centerfire handguns, muzzleloader/blackpowder rifles/handguns, or Rimfire. (See R12-4-318, paragraph 8) Fall Turkey: Shotgun shooting shot, bow and arrow, or crossbow. NO centerfire rifles, centerfire handguns, muzzleloader/blackpowder rifles/handguns, or Rimfire. Centerfire and rimfire were legal in the past for fall turkey, but the killing of a turkey hunter on the North Kaibab may have precipitated their elimination in 2008 http://www.azgfd.net/hunting/hunting/fall-...ges/2008/09/08/ Keith: the table in your link is from the 2007-08 regs, and is different from the 08-09 regs The list of methods allowed for turkey under R12-4-304 may create confusion and illegal take, if one does not see the restrictions in R12-4-318 Perhaps the lists in R12-4-304 need ammending. -

After the breeding season, hormonal changes cause the antlers to drop off. In Arizona, that antler drop typically occurs in April and May. From: http://www.coueswhitetail.com/coues_biology/life_stages.htm

What woods are you putting in the handle/riser? -
Here's some info about the transplanting. Guess we should properly call them "dusky" grouse . http://www.azgfd.net/wildlife/conservation...ish/2008/09/29/

Get out a few hours before daylight and listen for bugles. Spend the morning cow calling and chasing. Get a few DVD on elk vocalizations. I think the elk can recognize a Hoochie Mama now Sit a wallow mid day (don't lounge in camp). If you can find an unhunted water hole for the evening, great- otherswise try a trail leading to water but get far enough away that another hunter does not feel you are cutting him off. Congrats on your tag and have great fun on your first archery elk hunt.

Stan, Can I pull a Sargent Schulz and say "I knowww nnnuutttthhhing" I did not get to go last year to the North Kaibab. I guy I have hunted up there with the previous two years said G&F had done a lot of trapping last year in the area we hunt to transplant grouse to the Mogollon Rim. I have not hunted grouse in the White Mountains. Last fall's trip to Big lake turned into a fly fishing trip only. Doug~RR

It'll come out when you fire it. Think of what happens to a greater extent when one fireforms a case like when making one Ackley Improved. I wouldn't worry about it. Probably using too much case lube when resizing to cause the dents.

Grizzly, Annual individual dues for Flagstaff Archers are $60, Jan to Jan. Practice range has large Pacific Bow Butts every 5 yards from 10-70 yards. There is also a 15 target 3-D course. RR

New Scope, Turrets BDC?
Red Rabbit replied to CouesFanatic's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Here is the website that I have used to set up the drops for my turrets. http://www.eskimo.com/~jbm/calculations/calculations.html I prefer to zero at 200 yards with the turrets. If you do get the scope with the LR BDC reticle and turrets, the scope may require you to zero at some set range, often 200, for the hash marks to be close. Thus, the reticle will determine what yardage you use to zero for the turrets. RR -
