It has just been light rain today. Possibly 1-3" of snow tonight is what they are saying on the weather forecast. It is 45* now at 5:40pm. Drive safe.

salt and feed no more in 2009
Red Rabbit replied to wardsoutfitters's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
The rule I was fowarded stated: "Prohibit the use of edible or ingestible substances to attract big game for the purpose of hunting." Birdfeeders and quail blocks in your backyard should be OK. Don't think mouthblown/electronic calls will fall under this. I suspect doe or elk urine will be OK as it is not meant as an attractant to be eaten/ingested. -
Jim, Did you consider purchasing one of the buffalo tags? A friend in Flag had an early west hunt and shot a bull opening day, but did not get a deer. Doug

Where the heck is this?
Red Rabbit replied to 25-06's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Terry, You are not looking at houses under foreclosure, are you? Don't know about that one as an investment. Doug~RR -
Way cool buck! Hearty congrats to you. Gotta like those extra tines that make him what he is. What did he age out at? Since he was so close to camp, did you get back and have tenderloins and eggs for breakfast? From your trail cams, did you notice any particular time range that the deer tended to water? Any difference up high versus down int he lower country? Doug~RR

What bullet for a 300 wsm
Red Rabbit replied to lionhunter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
From my 300 WSM, I have used the 180 Accubond on 1 cow elk (complete penetration behind the shoulders), 1 mule deer (pass-through, bullet not recovered) and 2 Sitka Blacktails. 200 Accubond on 1 bull elk (found under hide on offside shoulder). Have used the 180 Scirocco on 1 mule deer (complete pass-through). Hope to use the 180 Nosler E-tip loaded for the HS 300WSM on an elk in the next week. Another 300 WSM (a Kimber for backup) has the 168 TTSX loaded. I would try the 150 E-Tip, 150 Accubond, or 150 TTSX. Plenty for deer (and with 100% retention, good for elk). Would get less felt recoil also with the 150 over the 180, and less bullet drop at long range, but a little more wind drift. With the no-lead bullet requirements starting in other states, may not hurt to think ahead. Hornady will be releasing a copper guiding bullet called the GMX next year. Hornady GMX Bullet -
Why do we hunt Coues?
Red Rabbit replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Since I posed the question, I guess I could opine an answer. My first coues hunt was back in the 80s, and have hunted them almost every year since. The greatest attraction to me is the open country of grass-covered, oak-studded mountains the Coues inhabit and the spot and stalk hunting it affords. I started hunting with those eastern whitetails under a corn flicker in an oat patch in South Texas. Sitting in a box blind waiting to shoot pales to almost ghostly white in comparison to humping it up a mountain and searching for the trophy. Something about the open country chase to me that begins and ends each hunting day with awesome sunrises and sunsets. Guess the same could be said about those harlequin quail that hold tight for one's best friend. Doug~RR -
cmc, A friend and I would go to the range in Corpus Christi at night to let the wind and temps go down. The light on the target would attract moths, which would make nice targets for our 22-250s as they crawled onthe target face. RR

Federal loads the 160 Accubond, 160 Partition, 160 TSX, 160 Trophy Bonded Tip, 175 Bearclaw, all good elk loads. But your choice may be limited more by what is left on the shelf this late into hunting season and post-Obama election.

She's chiseled in silicone, just like the champion steer at the Houston Livestock Show was many years ago. When the auction buyer had the steer butchered, the "muscle" was exposed.
