Coosefan's New Thunderstick
Red Rabbit replied to COOSEFAN's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Jim, Did you keep it as a 300WM? I like the color mix on the stock. The final product should be a gem. And the name is worth a good chuckle too . There are still some leftover coues tags to pick up and christen this rifle properly -
Which rifle is best for coues and psossibly elk?
Red Rabbit replied to BIGBUGPETE's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
A brake will cost $125-150 (and possibly your hearing ) The Vais is a good one. The Sims Limbsavers are good pads for the rifle. Some prefit models may be available. If not a gunsmith can grind one to fit and attach. -

The remington 770 is the reincarnation of the model 710, which some feel is the biggest POS that Big Green has ever offered. -

BBPete, Remington makes Managed Recoil ammo for the 270, 7 rem mag, 30-06 that your GF might enjoy better. http://www.remington.com/products/ammuniti...aged-Recoil.asp In standard ammo, choosing a lighter bullet weight will reduce recoil also. put a Simms pad or Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad on the rifle you get. You have not stated what your budget is (but it sounds low), but I would consider a Savage with the accutrigger, or Weatherby Vanguard, Leupold rings and bases, and a decent scope $200-250 like a Leupold 3-9, Nikon Buckmaster (not some $25 Tasco, BSA, Bushnell). -

How about the 30-06 for both uses? Use 150s or 165s for coues, and 180's for elk. It'll be effective for the ranges you noted. There is a wide variety of factory ammo with regular and premium bullets to choose from, and recoil is not bad for lots of practice. Since you emphasized that you really want a flat shooting deer rifle (and hinting possibly beyond 400 yards (after lotsa practice)), the 270 WSM would shine and be less expensive to feed than the 257WBY and it has a wider assortment of factory ammo to cover deer and elk. You can go to federalammo.com and compare ballistics. -
Matt, That is good to hear. On weather radar, it looked like the Tin house area in unit 10 was being major-league soaked.

There have been some heavy thunderstorms and flood warnings near Valle and Cataract. A tornado touched down about 10 miles NW of Valle over the weekend. Hopefully the roads were not too bad where they were and the mud did not hamper activites.

TICK...TOCK...TICK...TOCK just a reminder to the archery hunters to register before this Friday's opener. There is no separate archery and rifle registration needed. You only need to register once. RR

If you will be archery hunting for coues, the deadline to enter the CWT.com Coues Buck Contest is August 21 as archery deer season opens the 22nd in AZ. Doug~RR

Larry, Were you scouting in the leftover unit? Doug~RR -
Gauchoand, That guy with 19 BP is probably waiting for an early rifle bull elk tag in unit 9. Last year there were 5971 people that applied first or second choice for those 25 tags for unit 9 early rifle bull. The odds are not good for almost all of those applicants. I had 18 BP when I finally drew an antelope tag this year. There were likely 90 people with 18 or 19 BP hoping for one of the 10 permits in the 20% group for unit 10 antelope this year. Having top BP is not a guaranteed draw for species in high demand like sheep and antelope. Doug~RR

Coueskilla, #2 should be referring to hunts like the spring and fall turkey, buffalo, javelina (since there are youth javelina hunts in the fall).

Getting to treestand......unscented
Red Rabbit replied to zeddro's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
You could put your fresh hunting clothes on when you get to the stand. Put your smelly, sweaty clothes you hiked in on in a thick plastic bag. They make scent shield body wipes to use before putting on the fresh duds. -
Az Pheasants
Red Rabbit replied to AZcoyotehunter's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Either you must get drawn to hunt the pheasants near Yuma, or pay to hunt some of the hunt clubs. -

Put a field point in the insert, heat the point with a burner and periodically pull on the insert to see if the glue gives way.

The Lee powder measures definitely won't break the bank and will allow you to get close to the right amount of powder in the pan and trickle in the last few tenths of a grain. Sportsmans Warehouse has them also. http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/...&t=11082005 http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/...&t=11082005 RR
