TAM, Have they broken ground for the Prescott store? There is a sign up here in Flag for a future SW, but I can't see Flag giving it enough business to succeed. Doug~RR -
Gutless Field Dressing
Red Rabbit replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Handling the guts is also a good way to invite bacterial infection into cuts and cracks in your skin. A good reason to wear surgeon gloves. -
After college, I moved to a ranch in South Texas where I first started hunting. Hunted dove, deer, coyotes, rabbits, skunk. Pretty much self-taught through lots of reading. First deer, a trophy spike, was shot out of the pickup window with a Rem 788 in 243 from about 10 yards, as it fed on some corn.

I have skinned the entire side before cutting off the quarters, then flip it over to do the other side. Too many also cut through the hair from the outside, which produces the loose hairs and dulls the knife quickly. To get the loins, go right through the thin skin above the pelvis and reach in with the hand and they are usually easy to pull out, or use a small knife with your finger near the top of the blade tip to cut the end attachments. Yep, don't want to nick the intestines or bladder. And you do not need a Butt-Out tool for this method -
With the Jo Jan multi-fletcher, it can do six arrows at a time, but only it only does one vane/feather at time per arrow. http://www.jojan.net/index.php Doug~RR

I have the JoJan and have done fearthers, regular vanes, blazers on cedars, aluminums and carbon shafts. With the Blazers, I put also glued a vane to the front of the clamp to support that end of the clamp along the shaft while gluing the rear Blazer to the shaft.

Danny, A week's worth of hunting with the kids and some lifetimes of good memories for all. Your son's smile about the warthog about pushed his ears to the back of his head. Doug

Consider renting a boat at Big Lake. I would use 4# fluorocarbon line on a spinning reel. Use some good ball bearing swivels (not the brass barrel swivels) to reduce line twist from a spinner. As a bait fishing kid, I would tie on a 10' length of 2# fly tippet, add a #18 or 16 single salmon egg hook, put on one egg so the hook does not show, and let it drift down naturally without any weight next to the anchored boat. The downside of using bait is that they tend to swallow the hook deeply and are difficult to release unharmed, especially the little stocker boogers. You can also tie a fly, like a black woolly bugger on the 2# tippet, put a split shot 3' above, and very slowly troll with an occasional dip of the oars. Twitch the line with 2" hand jerks. With a spoon like a Daredevil, I like to retrieve slow so it just barely wobbles, stop for a second or two and resume reeling. The hits seem to come right as I start reeling again. Works with spinners too.

For the combo with Javelina, you will likely need to consider drawing a javelina tag a unit with 100% draw odds, and those will be the southern units 33, 34, 36 and not 22, 23. Archery Coues tags will be OTC. You can check this HUNT ARIZONA book for draw odds. http://www.azgfd.gov/pdfs/h_f/hunting/Hunt_AZ_2008.pdf I would camp from the back of the rental truck and hike everyday. Temps may average from 35*-65*, with a chance of some precipitation once a week. You can get data on weather.com for the closet city you are hunting near. Bring some nice binos to put on a tripod to glass javelina on the sunny slopes in the mornings. Spot and stalk is fun, and they may respond to a varmint call. http://www.biggamehunt.net/sections/Javeli...a_09160112.html The coues and javelina habitas overlap.

2009 ABA Western States Triple Crown

I noticed that the date of the BHH was changed back to the end of July. This should make the many that support the Memorial Day Clints Well shoot happy. -
When I moved onto a ranch in South Texas back in 1980, the prevailing thought was that spikes were genetically inferior. Hence the rancher wanted us to fill out tags with only spikes. We did, trying to shoot any spike seen, but saw few mature deer as the years progressed. My thought was that we eliminated most of the bucks before they were 2 1/2 YO.

Stan, We always had better luck for smallies with black Mister Twister Grubs 3" as opposed to spinners and Rapalas. Grasshoppers and poppers on a flyrod were fun. I have not been there in several years also. Doug

Stan, Nice smallmouth. Guess you found your lucky fishing shirt for catching your 2 "best yets" What was their lure of choice? Doug~RR

Mike, I spotted this buck about a mile away before he walked behind a ridge. We later relocated him heading toward a tank, but he bedded in the middle of a cedar instead of proceeding to the water. He busted out when he saw the truck, and ran to the top of the ridge where he stared at us for several minutes. He is a nice average buck, but lacks mass at the base and above the prong, and could use some longer prongs. RR

Clay, 2 of us put in for 33 & 36C December, as the friend only wants a December tag. Like you, Im not pleased with the Dec reduction, but someone has to draw those 20 tags. So why not make it a first choice? Good luck when the results are finally posted. Doug -

New Mexico Antelope ranch assignment?
Red Rabbit replied to TAM's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
Tim, Sounds like you have the potential for a great hunt. Will the rancher allow you to come over and scout before the hunt? Doug~RR
