Arizona Elk, Deer and Wolves
Red Rabbit replied to longshooter's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
The more this grave concern is echo'd, the better. Gotta send the emails to AZGFD also. -
Lots of satified users and many think it is the best coating out there. Doug Burche @ Ultracoatings (formerly Fit4Duty) did my 6.5WSM. No chipping or peeling. May as well him ultra bore coat the barrel also. Do a search for cerakote on 24hourcampfire.com http://www.ultracoatingsinc.com/services.html

Flagstaff Archers will be raffling off a Bowtech 101st Airborne bow and a Bushnell Scout 1000 with ARC at the Max Hamilton shoot. Only 100 tickets will be sold for each. I will have tickets at the CWT Marshall Lake picnic, or you can PM me, if anyone feels lucky

Sportsmen's Action Needed
Red Rabbit replied to rthrbhntng's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
I did not come up with anything witha search on AZGFD.com either regarding a plan to expand, although it was in the Flag Rag within the last year regarding the Peaks, Mogollon Rim and Canyon. Doug~RR -
You didn't apply through Cabelas TAGS again, didja? I read on another forum that UPS tried to deliver a parcel of applications on Wed. Wonder who was late this time.

That little guy seems to have some good mass. Would be nice to see him a few years. Judging from the pelt, that yote was suffering. Thanks for euthanizing him . RR

How many archery deer hunters have you talked to that were unaware of the draw in certain units for archery deer? One has to figure that many hunters are uninformed and do not keep up with changes. Also must figure that the WMs may have "fun" in the draw units with those without permits. RR

Bob, Thanks. The camera is just a Panasonic FZ20. 5MP, 12x optical zoom. It would be nice to have several grand to outfit with a Nikon SLR and set of large telephotos. Here's another that came out OK, and one that was just playing around with for Chris. Doug~RR

Where's This? Pic #2
Red Rabbit replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
It's been several years since I have been there scouting, so my memory is a little hazy. In looking at the topo map and recalling where I drove, I believe it is past Tinny Tank to Tin Roof. Casey, That is a scanned copy of my original of the shack, with a border added . -

I kinda figured Josh would have been there and recognize it. I do not recall a porch though. Shack sits a little east from a tank, iirc. I hope no one has dismantled it for the wood and tin roof. Kinda a neat place found while scouting for coues in 6A. RR -
Would not have needed a 100 yard pin

Who put in for the archery deer draw?
Red Rabbit replied to KB-AZ's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I think many of those that are strictly archery hunters may have put in for the 12A, 13B permits if thhey are not going to concentrate on their favorite spot. These bowhunters are the minority, though. Most bowhunters are dual weapon hunters and would apply for rifle hunts, and archery hunt the OTC units in addition to their rifle hunts. Personally, even though I like archery hunting, I put in for a Dec WT permit and will hunt an OTC unit if not drawn. -
RIP UP THOSE AZG&F SURVEY CARDS!!!!
Red Rabbit replied to bowsniper's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
How big of a deal is it that there is no mandatory reporting? Seems the bigger concern should be about the smaller population surveys covering buck:doe ratios and fawn:doe ratios. The calculated harvest success probably varies more with the effects of weather during the hunt, monsoon moisture of previous years, and what type of hunter get drawn thatn the variations in the returned cards. If one is upset about the accuracy from the returned cards and yet does nothing to create more accurate data under the current system by refusing to return their card, then bad karma or failure to draw should follow them, IMO. Better would be to supply correct data with the survey cards while lobbying for mandatory harvest reporting, if one is inclined to that direction. The 40-45% return rate is a bunch better than the voter turnout in November; perhaps we should have mandatory voting in the general elections. And it's immensely better than the turnout at the public and commissioner G&F meetings. Lots of Tycho Brahes in the crowd. RR -
TJ, I believe you are correct. The Big 10 was around before the Rocky hunts, iirc.

Fry Park, Sterling point? How long do you think Lower LM will last?

4 of the 7 in the meadow this evening. Half of them seem to be mutants.

Where Are You Going to be Opening Morning?
Red Rabbit replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
One of my favorite spots is a saddle that separates a south side feeding slope and a north side bedding slope. The saddle is rather wide so it is still a 300 yard poke from the middle to the edges in either direction. It is also a good place to be in the evening also. The hard part is getting there without spooking a deer. RR -
Reading R12-4-114 part C.2.a. I see that it is up to 20% of the total number of sheep permits (not by hunt number like most other species) are reserved for the 20% pool. I didn't read where a unit with only one permit is not eligible for the 20% max BP pool (Perhaps I missed it; where did you read this?). In paragraph E, you can see where a NR cannot draw a permit in a sheep unit with only one tag. For deer, YES, you could be drawn for the Nov hunt in the 20% pass without being considered for the Dec hunt in the regular draw. In R12-4-114, it says the 20% pass is for each hunt number and for both 1st and 2nd choices. What unit were you considering and how many BP do you have? You might put two December hunts for choices 1&2, and put the Nov hunt 3rd to eliminate that possible problem, but this may also mean you may not draw unless you put in for an Oct hunt that will likely have leftovers. Using unit 33 as an example, last year the max bp for the Nov hunt was 6. With the 750 permits, there were 150 reserved for the pass. 52 applicants with only 2 BP drew in the 20% pass. The 20% pass did not get to the people with 0 or 1 BP. For the Dec hunt in unit 33, the 20% pass was involved for hunters having 4 to 8 BP.
