The first major snowstorm was clearing this evening, so Rica and I went to the Kachina Wetlands to grab some photos as the sun set. Hope you enjoy. Doug~RR

Chris, doubt the white stuff is going anywhere quickly. It's 16* now. High on Friday is to be 34*, cooling from 40* on Thursday. Here's another cool pic to get you thinking BRRRRR.

DB, Yes, some honkers circled a couple of times and were sounding off when we first walked out to the ponds. I had to hit the shutter quickly when I realized they were to fly in front of the bright cloud. JC, Rica was a rompin' for an hour. Something about snow that brings out a dog's spunk.

For mainly quail and dove, I would choose a 20 guage. The gun will be lighter to carry all day. The semiautomatic will absorb recoil with its gas system. A Remington or Benelli semi-auto would be nice. Check the fit for length, cast, pitch.

more on Calif. condor issue
Red Rabbit replied to billrquimby's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
So Commissioner Hanna was not one of the Sheeples and was politcally executed? -
Without any legs, I am surprised it got that heavy after 16 years. New age record also? Looks like all she could eat was that rotten log. Do you think the cow was a "thalidomide baby"? Congrats to your son on getting elkzilla for his birhtday.

coocoo, did you give it the 31x15 BFG rollover fold?

Jim, Looks like a bucks n ducks getter to me. The wagon wheel makes a good prop for the pup pics. Are you going to try to teach her to be a pointing lab? Doug~RR

the last few day's outings...
Red Rabbit replied to Kilimanjaro's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Scott, Thanks for the pheasant hunting trip on a snowy Sunday night in Flag. I looked at the MT antelope draw odds for near you, not favorable. Guess Rica will have to only hunt upland birds. Shucks. Pics seem sharp. What camera are you using? Doug -

Tommy, Best of luck on your hunts. Your trio should have fun in Mexico. Looking forward to the episode updates again. Doug~RR -
good coues hunting videos? (picture for your time)
Red Rabbit replied to 300 ultra mag's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Matt, Sadly, I think that can be said for just about all of the coues videos out that I have seen. Not much explanation of what and why and how. Seems you need to examine the videos carefully to see what they are doing for any applications. How nice would it be to have a video series that thoroughly discusses scouting, early and late season archery tactics, Oct/Nov/Dec rifle tactics, and coues biology & habits relative to various habitat zones. The best aids I found still are the books by Duwane Adams and Richard Ockenfels. Doug~RR -
Dang, is it December already? I still need to buy maps and see where my unit is.

I did not go up Temporal while scouting. Have you called the Forest Service?

I saw a post on MM that a 138 was taken in Mexico. Supposed to be the new #3. No pics or story. Anyone heard or seen anything about this?

Got the new bow! Now for sights and rest!
Red Rabbit replied to ajohunter's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Regarding the sights with wrapped fibers, you might find that with closely spaced pins of a fast bow that they will glow so brightly in direct sunlight that the glow/halo will obscure the target. Also, I have found that as light dims at dusk, I cannot see the target before I cannot see the pins when looking through my peep. Ask to look at some wrapped-fiber pins in direct sunlight, not in the store light, for your own decision. -
Could be that the rain softened the ground making it easier the scratch for food. Or after hunkering down a while during the heavier rains, they need food for energy. After a rain is good scenting conditions for a dog.

Clay, In planning a stalk, you could use it extra yardage capability to figure how far that knoll or ridge is in between, and if a shot from there is feasible. The extra yardage capability and narrow beam dispersion of a Leica or Swaro would help with ranging tough, smaller targets like antelope on the open flats. Doug

Bill, Many of us have yearned for good looking blondes . Doug

Jim, You better satiate that addiction and book that Dall hunt now for a few years from now (and Rocky and Stone as you wait to draw the desert). Them legs of ours aren't getting any younger (or prettier), and with the active geology, I can vouch for the mountains getting steeper and taller every year. Doug~RR

Colorado Waterfowl Hunt Pix
Red Rabbit replied to Outdoor Writer's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Morning glory sure started your day off well with a vivid sunrise. Is this deer and duck hunt to be published?
