Red Rabbit replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
If you entered the contest, had success on the archery, Oct or Nov hunts, and don't see you mug above, please email the pic and score to me. Thanks. Doug~RR -
Kevin, If you are looking into higher end ($) lefties http://www.lefthandrifles.com/ Or you can find a lefty action and have one of your desires cobbled up by many a gunsmith. A lefty Rem 700 in 7 Rem Mag would be a straight rebarrel to a 257WBY

How about the Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44 AO with the Rapid Z 800 reticle? http://www.zeiss.com/c1256bcf0020be5f/Cont...52571d700377d7e I find the Conquests to be clearer than the Leupold VXIII. With a 50mm objective, you will likely need higher scope rings for the objective bell to clear the barrel. This may raise your cheek weld from the stock. You should find the 44mm bright enough for all the hunting hours, unless you are going to hunt varmints and hogs at night in Texas.

Consider the 1200 over the 900 for the added yardage capability since it is difficult to range those max distances except for reflective objects ( I usually think up to 2/3 or 3/4 of the max under normal conditions). Antelope on the flats are difficult. Another excellent rangefinder is the Swaro, with good optics and good distance ability. The negative is the large aiming circle. Doug at Camera Land should be able to give you a great price on the Leicas.

Small game hunting
Red Rabbit replied to GameHauler's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Try some rat poison/bait and a bowl of antifreeze under the hood. Don't let your dog to either. -
Silver = White chocolate and dark chocolate mix ??? Do you know how much retriever training has she had or will have? Will she be used for ducks, quail, tennis balls?

Tim, Way to adapt to the conditions. I like the stickers off the left side of his rack. You didn't cut the cape a little short, didja? With 500 schmolas, guess you could buy lotsa lead bullets and trash bags. Doug~RR

I could see the scope atop a 204 Ruger for prairie dogs and such.

Spent the weekend doing lots of driving to familiarize myself with the unit for a December tag. Firstcoues was the copilot and Rica the navigator (never got lost ) Figured I'd share some pics, although not of ridges to protect those places people have mentioned to me. Found some good areas and some not so good. One looked fine, until all the atv trails appeared in the binos. We did lots of looking and little glassing for deer. We did spend Sat eve looking over a basin and hour and glassed 13 does in 20 minutes, but no bucks. Will be back down over Thanksgiving to look at a couple more spots and to glass for bucks (and let Rica chase some mearns ) What's left for the lizards to crawl on Some hoo doos Looking south from the Mt Hopkins Observatory road From below Elephant Head Guess we ain't hunting those ridges

Good looking girl. At first glance, I thought she was a mix of Weimaraner and lab.

Took another trip to 34A after Thanksgiving. Went on the east side Friday afternoon as was to meet Casey and head to Parker for some mearns hunting Saturday. Had the full moon poking between some clouds Friday eve. Rica sourced out a covey of mearns as I was running out to a claering to get the pic. Saturday morning was a bust with no coveys found, possibly due to the wind and some drizzle. Saturday afternoon, Rica earned her kibbles and found a handful of coveys. FirstCoues and I got 8 for dinner. That evening we were treated to a nice sunset illuminating low clouds on the Huachucas to the east. This was near the head of Fish Canyon Sunday morning. This hill was covered with bovine overgrazing units, so figure some of the coues will be pushed out. Did hear lots of shotgun blasts from the draws below, but I needed to look at some other areas rather than succumb to mearns nirvana. Rica says there are BIG BUCKS down there none-the-less. I'll point em out to ya. Hiked over the these ridges. Rica found three coveys along the trail hiking in and out. Guess I should carry the shotgun and pretend I am scouting for coues. Hiked up to a pass between two peaks, and she found another covey that flew way down the mountainside, screaming all the way. Drove over to the west side via Box Canyon road to glass a spot for Sunday evening. Stopped to glass a while off the road to Hopkins Observatory. Rica busted a quail and said, "come on, I'll go retrieve it if you shoot it"

Important case in front of the Supeme Court
Red Rabbit replied to DesertBull's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Read that yesterday the SCOTUS decided to hear the DC case, most llikely in Feb/March. http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/law/11/20/scotu...guns/index.html -
Pretty interesting data set showing deer activity levels versus moon phase and time of day. http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/u...e=0#Post1811963

Normally I choose a bullet that I want to use and look in the manuals for powders that give the higher velocities with a good load density (~90%) without having to compress the charge. Starting 5% below max, shoot groups of three in 0.5 gr increments over the chrongraph. I will choose the best combination of velocity and accuracy, then vary that load by +/- 0.2gr, shooting groups of 5. I'd rather have more accuracy than an extra 50-100 fps. Then I will vary the seating depth. With the 6.5 WSM that had no load data, I loades one round with the chosen bullet and powder increasing by 1 grain each round, and shot over a chronograph until I reached my target velocity ot the velocity increase taperd off. I let this be max, dropped back down a couple of grains and worked up in 0.5 grain increments, 3 rounds per charge, to shoot for accuracy and over a chrongraph. Shoot groups of 5 with +/- 0.2 gr. With the best, then I vary the seating depth. I have tried using different primers in the load, but have not seen much difference in group size for a hunting rifle. Has anyone used the Audette ladder system at 300 yards or OCW method to develop loads? http://www.mikeswillowlake.com/ladder%20test.htm http://home.earthlink.net/~dannewberry/dan...ment/index.html http://home.earthlink.net/~dannewberry/dan...opment/id1.html http://practicalrifler.6.forumer.com/a/ocw...ut_post363.html

I ain't shot it yet, but supposed YOU did. What would you do? Many of us dream of shooting a monster buck, but what if you actually got Godzilla? Tell your closest hunting bud sworn to secrecy that you got a nice buck, and let your modesty/personal satisfaction prevail? No one knows but you and him. Enter it and have it panel scored to honor the trophy, and remain an anonymous hunter (if you could get by without releasing your name)? Publish your story in the trophy mags? Sell it to Cabelas, Bass Pro, or a private collector, get a reproduction made for your wall, and use the money to take a dream hunt? Sell the trophy and donate the money to charity? Are you prepared for the publicity, security and personal attacks on legality that would go with the trophy?

I think anyone would be dancing around like a little kid with your success. Congrats!

FALL 2007-JAN 2008 COUES BUCK CONTEST

Jody completed the trifecta for the Beck family with this awesome November buck. http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/in...ic=7507&hl= -
Amanda, You definitely had an exceptional hunt to remember. An enjoyable story and accompanying pics. I like that right side, and he doesn't look all that short (the antlers, not Scott, I know how tall he is ) His legs (the buck's again) almost look piebald. Big CONGRATS to ya! Did you get to the dwellings and take some pics? Doug~RR

Factory or Handloaded Ammo?
Red Rabbit replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I have always used handloads in the rifles taken coues hunting. In 270Win, it was a 130&140 Ballistic Tip. In 280Rem, it was a 150 Ballistic Tip. In 7RemMag, it was a 150 Ballistic tip and 140 Partition. In 260Rem, it was a 129 SST. In 300WSM, it was a 150TSX and 180Accubond. This year in a 6.5WSM, it is a 130 Scirocco. I have always gotten better accuracy with handloads, although I still try lots of factory ammo for grins. With handloads, one can choose the bullet one wants to use. I enjoy experimenting and the search for that optimal handload, even when I have one or a few already. Doug~RR
