Jason, I have not used a precision mic, and the RCBS website does not have instructions shown, only a pic Might give RCBS a call Monday morning if you don't get it figured out over the weekend. Doug

An interesting article chronicling the results of the Berger VLD on game in New Zealand appears in the August issue of Wolfe Handloader magazine. http://www.riflemagazine.com/magazine/PDF/hl248partial.pdf The delayed expansion after 2" and the test tube results caught my attention. UPS delivered a couple of boxes of 130 gr VLDs to the door today to try in the 6.5 WSM. Hopefully I have not PO'd G&F and I can draw a deer tag to try these on. I figure that some of you handloaders may be interested and try em for coues. Doug~RR

The magic marker works OK, seating deeper until you get no land marks on the bullet. I use the Stoney Point (now Hornady) OAL length guage, dummy case, and Comparator. http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/...&t=11082005 http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/...&t=11082005 http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/...&t=11082005 Might be cheaper to buy the comparator base and 30cal body separately than the whole comparator kit http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/...&t=11082005 http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/...leitemid=724733 I am assuming you have a dial/electronic caliper needed to use both. http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/...&t=11082005

born2hunt, Welcome to the site. You might pick up the latest B&C record book and pick out the top AZ entries. I am sure everyone would like to hear the story and see the pics of your buck. If you want, you can email me the pics and I can post them. dkoepsel@aol.com Doug~RR

Sure it's not an IA in costume made of fake fur trying to sneak across the border as a protected species? Your friend captured a special cat.

And I thought it was the new baby that was keeping you up late.

Coues Deer Bronze >> Progress

Jason, I sent you a PM. Doug -
Gr8White, What should G&F do to change the draw program? Change it so only the first choice in the max pool is looked at? But many would want both 1st and 2nd choices considered if they have max points after many years of applying. Reissue a tag if leftover permits are available in units one was not chosen, like in your case? If so, this would make a permit in your second choice unit available, and someone may have liked that unit more than the one they were drawn for. So the whole draw would have to be redone for each subsequent change? Should G&F make a tag swap available for leftover tags? Then, what of those who were not drawn for the the hunt turned in on the swap? Get rid of the max point draw? I can hear the screams. In a most equitable system, there will be some flaws and some inequities. Think you found a minor one. RR

Spring Results Are Up!!!
Red Rabbit replied to azcouesandelk's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Drew a general rifle pig tag in unit 21, Feb 22-28. Will likely carry the longbow. No turkey or buff. Doug~RR -
German shorthairs are probably most commonly used. I have a German Wirehair. Other considerations would be a Brittany, English Pointer, and Visla. Dogs with longer hair tend to collect seeds and burrs. A light colored coat will be cooler for the dog while working, and easier for you to see. http://www.azpdc.org/index.html http://www.arizonaregion.netkennel.com/ http://www.vdd-gna.org/ This is a good read. http://www.vommoorehaus.com/how_to_buy_a_gun_dog.htm Try a google search for choosing an upland bird dog

Amanada, Is it correct to say that if one uses a photo hosting site like photobucket.com, pics are automatically resized and Amanda's server space is not consumed.

Tony, The wall withthe lizard on it is on the east side close to Hwy 83. Scorpion nest? Bet ya shook your boots and checked your bags a few times. When living in S Texas, had a scorpion under the bed covers, and in the bathtub. I did see what is left of these adobe walls going up towards Josephine. Was told this might be an old post office? Pretty buck through the face. Some nice long tines also. Congrats. Do you have any more pics of him to share?
-
Eartip to eartip is about 14". Eye corner to nose tip is about 5 1/2 to 6" Ear length is about 6" This should help judging tine length and inside spread. Duwane Adams' How to Hunt Coues Deer book has some good info and pics with scores. Also the the photo section off the main home page here.

How was the opener for everyone? Rica wanted to go near Cortes Jct, so she pointed up many and got to retrieve 10. I was surprised that the Gambels held well. Was a little warm this afternoon, so cut it short for her sake. Sorry, no pics; need to get a smaller camera bag for the digital and attach it to the waist belt of the bird vest. Doug~RR

Mearns Scouting Trip
Red Rabbit replied to azbownunter22's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I am sure a few coveys will interfere with my WT scouting over Thanksgiving weekend Doug~RR -
HnC, No missing decimals. That is the total drop from boreline at 800 yards. With a 250 yard zero, the drop is still 157" at 800 yards. I don't care to estimate that holdover with a regular duplex reticle. Mark, I am with you on the bad angle scenario. I was considering the 130 Berger VLD in the 6.5WSM, but heard a report on performance through an antelope gut on an angled shot. Swayed me to the bonded 130gr Scirocco. Never have taken a shot yet angling forward through the paunch, but never hurts to be prepared for worst case scenario. (Wonder why my daypack weighs so much then). You forgot to mention that bigger antlers gives one an increased shooting ability at longer ranges for both archers and rile hunters.

Dennis, The "unwelcome" you received by some (not all) is rather disturbing and bothersome to me. This reminds me of the post about a youth hunter who showed up at the junior elk camp and a snide comment was made to him. I guess manners to strangers and saying things positive are on the wayside. As a first time poster, you introduced yourself well and explained a need for some information. Too bad your extended hand was spat in with discern and snideness. As you can tell, this response is not directed solely at you. Like AZ Guide and Bryce Canyon, I have no backroad knowledge of 24A, or I would surely give some insight. You might send Amanda, aka Coueswhitetail, a pm or email as she lives in Globe and should have some recommendations for you. I wish you an enjoyable hunt with your son, and a better welcome to the site. Doug~RR

Best/ most accurate factory .300 WSM bullet?
Red Rabbit replied to stalkincoues's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
As mentioned in the 30-06 bullets post, you will get less drop with the 150s, but less wind drift and more energy with the 180s. You can compare factory ballistics here for Federal ammo: http://federalammo.com/ballistics/Ammo_Sea...earm=1&s1=1 -
