Way to go Geoff! RR

In 2002, I took this antelope from southwest Utah. Tim Rajsich of TR Taxidermy did this wall pedestal. I like the offset wall pedestal form/manikin with or without base better than a normal shoulder mount form as it puts more life back into the mount, imo. Ooops, how'd these woodies sneak in here? Tim Rajsich of TR Taxidermy in Flagstaff has been doing my mounts since I moved to Flagstaff. Here is a pedestal mount of a coues taken over ten years ago. I have included some closeups. Look at the eyes, nostril depth, ear butts, lip tuck when choosing your taxidermist. Tim has done several other nice mounts for me. I went the cheapest route on my first mounts when living in Texas, and you get what you pay for. Doug~RR

Choice Of Words
Red Rabbit replied to GameHauler's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
When I think of "harvest," the implication to me is the gathering of a crop, ie how many bushels per acre. My 1973 pre-PC dictionary does not mention animals. OTOH, I don't care for "whack em and stack em" either. Doug~RR -

I too would rather have the sticky-back permit with a sheep hunt number on it rather than the refund check that came today. Next year. RR -
Successful archery deer hunters must report harvest By Tom Cadden, public information officer, Arizona Game and Fish Department All archery deer hunters are reminded of a rule that went into effect in 2004. Successful archery deer hunters must contact an Arizona Game and Fish Department office in person or by telephone at 1-866-903-DEER (3337) within 10 days of taking a deer unless the deer has been checked through a mandatory hunter checking station. Department analysis indicates that only about 35 percent of the successful archers complied with this requirement last year. The archery report-in process was put in place to gather data on archery harvest rather than go to a full draw system for archery deer hunts. Please report your harvest to help us collect this important data. If you fail to comply with this rule, you could be cited by the department. Hunters must physically check-in harvested bears and mountain lions By Rory Aikens, public information officer, Arizona Game and Fish Department Bear and mountain lion hunters must contact the Arizona Game and Fish Department within 48 hours of taking a bear or a mountain lion, and you must also physically check-in the harvested animal within 10 days with the Department. Successful bear hunters must contact an Arizona Game and Fish Department office in person or by telephone at 1-800-970-BEAR (2327) within 48 hours of taking a bear. Successful mountain lion hunters must contact an Arizona Game and Fish office in person or by telephone at 1-877-438-0447 within 48 hours of taking a lion. The report for both bears and mountain lions shall include the hunter’s name, hunting license number, tag number, sex of the lion or bear taken, management unit where the lion or bear was taken, and telephone number at which the hunter can be reached to obtain additional information. Also, within 10 days of taking a mountain lion or a bear, the hunter shall present the animal’s skull, hide, and attached proof of sex for inspection. If the skull is to be frozen before inspection by the department, the mouth should be propped open so a tooth can be extracted for age determination. Hunters are encouraged to contact a department office by telephone to coordinate the inspection. (from AZGFD website)

David, I did not see the NT in the group when I saw them in the meadow two and three eves ago. The biggest one in the meadow Monday was the one I posted pics of a couple weeks ago, the 6x7 in velvet in front of a house in Forest Highlands. He looked to be 340 stripped. Doug~RR

Red Rabbit posted a topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
In light of the recent discussions and commissioners' meeting about the 2008-2010 hunt guidelines, what are your opinions regarding the changes to the archery deer hunt structures? Please answer the survey above, and be sure to answer each question. Thanks. -

Scott, You know how much you have been blessed recently with your marriage, new child, and now the relocation. Heck, ya might bump into T-Final. Wishing you and Bonnie the best, and that Montana treats you well. Keep the floor open for me someday. Doug~RR -

Survey: Hunting Archery and Rifle Seasons
Red Rabbit replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Cannot see where rifle and archery deer tags cost different. Both are $34.50. The rifle permits have an additional 7.50 for the application/draw process, just like turkey and bear have the additional 7.50 added for the draw process over the non-permit tag costs. -
The scenery alone will make your hunt a winner. Hope the bugling keeps you awake at night and you get to pursue a nice bull. RR.

Far bottom right in the middle of the green to the right of the mesquite? At least my monitor shows a broadside fuzzy blob with the head on the right amidst the rest of the fuzz.

Shooting at an incline or decline - Bullet trajectory
Red Rabbit replied to crotalus's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
A couple of reads. Seems that without a program, multiplying the bullet drop by the cosine of the angle would work reasonably well, better than multiplying the yardage by the cosine of the angle. http://www.exteriorballistics.com/ebexplained/5th/33.cfm http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f19...rections-22768/ -
Survey: Hunting Archery and Rifle Seasons
Red Rabbit replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
The units going to a lottery for archery deer are those in which archers take 20% or more of the total deer taken. It is not whether 20% of the archers take a deer. The overall archery success is still around 6%, and has been this low for many years. While archery success is still near 6%, the sheer numbers of archers hunting a unit may allow them to take 20% of the deer realtive to the rifle hunters. Using 2005 data for unit 12A (low archery harvest), archers took 106 of 740 deer for 14% of the deer, but only had 6% hunt success. Archery harvest in 2002 was 224 of 554 deer taken or 40% of the harvest. THe % archery harvest can vary wildly from year to year bepending on boththe archery and rifle success. Rifle harvest in 2002 was 320 but in 2005 was 640. Permit numbers have an effect alomng with the weather. If I remember correctly from one of the regional meetings, the % would be averaged over a few years so one year's success would not throw a unit in or out of the draw. It was stated that lower success may remove a unit from the draw (but I have my doubts this may happen, and feel an overall archery draw is looming over the horizon). -
I noticed both pics in the RMG&F mag which was in the mailbox yesterday. I wonder how many seeing Josh's pic will think one mainly hunts coues in the snow covered pines? Doug~RR
