Currently, I hunt with a pair of Lowa Tibets. I like the all leather tops and rubber rand. No cordura to let cactus needles and dust through, and the rubber rand to protect from sharp rocks. Cabelas has similar boots like the Mountain Hikers or Alaska Hikers, but you're also looking at over 200 dollars like the Lowas. I'd suggest gathering your hiking socks and trying on some diff boots and widths at Cabelas or REI, to find a comfortable pair to match your feet. May not want to go too stiff, like with a pair of mountaineering boots, but the $39 pair of Merrells may not offer the support you want on a rocky mountainside. Won't be happy with a cheap or expensive pair that don't fit, give you blisters and sore feet. Might also try a good pair of footbeds to replace the factory insoles. Bob soles provide good grip, but the litlte knobs tend to break off with lots of rocks. Better for soil, mud and snow. Doug~RR

Allen, If you could, borrow a variety of spotters and a resolution chart for comparison in daylight and twilight. I would imagine that the tripler will suffer in low light conditions, but curious as to how much when looking into the shaded side of the mountain in the morning or evening. Doug~RR

Mike and Mike, For antelope, I put in for what I think are the two best trophy units. In looking at the bonus point analysis, I think I would have had about a 1 in 3 chance for the second unit (that means better odds at not getting drawn, but I'd rather look at what is in the glass than what is missing). Drawing my first choice would have been a 2% chance without the max of 18 BP. Next year maybe I'll draw that rifle tag. Considering the moisture north of Flag and Williams this past fall and winter, units 9&10 could have bulls and bucks suffering from antler and horn deficit. A friend with max points did not draw his early rifle bull tag and he is not dissappointed this year, due to the moisture conditions in 9 and 10. I believe the bonus point for field work did not go through. Am I wrong? Doug~RR

A friend's wife is shooting 43 lbs with her Mathews Black Max. Passed through a bull a couple years ago with an 85gr Thunderhead on a carbon shaft. I like the looks of the 100 gr Razorcaps or NAP's new Hellrazor, both cut-on-impact heads for better penetration. Doug~RR

Nice iridescence on the neck feathers above the breast. Did the head have an orange color behind the blue cheeks? Have a fun hunt in 7. May not be a snow line left to hunt by the end of April. Doug~RR

I'd save for the Swaro 15's. Most of your time is spent glassing, and you'd get the most value with them coues hunting over a pair of 10x. Get a sturdy tripod also. That said, I use a pair of 10+15 Duovids. You will lose some field of view with the Duovids, which would be more important at 10x if deer or elk hunting inthe timber. They are only 4 oz heavier than the 10x50's and the same bulk. I consolidated a pair of Minox 15x and Leica 10x50 to save weight and not have to carry 2 binos. Shortpants, You have the first focal plane, where the reticle magnifies along with the image. The Leupold has the reticle in the second focal plane, where the reticle stays the same size as the image enlarges. Some Swaros are first plane. Do you have one with the TDS? If so, is the greatest distance/lowest hash mark still visible at the highest power? The first focal plane would be best with B&C/TDS type reticles. Doug

Last weekend, Casey and I did some shooting across a canyon at rocks on the opposite wall around 450 yards away. Both of us had 4.5-14 Leupolds with B&C or varmint reticles on our 22-250's. One of us would point out a selected rock target and spot the hits. I saw no impact when Casey first shot. He had forgotten to turn the power selector ring to the 14x, which is the setting that the stadia wires work. Minutes later, I did the same mistake , as I did not turn the power ring to 14x after looking through at lower magnification. Thus, drawbacks were exposed, that it easy to forget to be on the correct (usually highest) power for the subtension to be correct, and at high power the field of view may be too limited for quick target aquisition. I still prefer the turrets. They work the same regardless of the scope magnification setting. Having to use the highest magnification with a B&C type reticle in the dim light of dusk may result in too dim of an image or difficulty in seeing the fine cross hairs. Doug~RR

Several years ago there was a survey done regarding the Kaibab archery deer hunt and whether it should be a draw. More recently, ABA questioned the hunter and harvest numbers, which resulted in the Kaibab archery stamp and the check in for successful hunters the last couple years. Harvest was much lower than estimated. ABA opposed the Kaibab going to a draw as it feared it would spread to a statewide draw. The Kaibab archery season was moved to be concurrent with the archery elk season in an effort to reduce the number of hunters north of the ditch. RR

Spring results are gone, but there is no change to the bonus point numbers for elk and antelope.

First-come applications for leftovers will be accepted starting April 16, according to the regs. If this date holds, we would have to know if we're unsuccessful and have time to mail in the apps well before that date. My guess is that results will be posted by the end of March. Then we can all start shed hunting in the appropriate unit to see what caliber of bull made it through last season an find that honeyhole away from any road. Doug~RR PS Diet Dew is good stuff. It ain't just the hunting shows that seem like a waste to me, regular network programming is also. I'm tempted to cancel the satellite and save the $. Think I watch about 90 minutes a week, and best I can say it's just wasted time. RR Update, I just fell into temptation. The corn flickers will go off and be televised without my observation.

BuckNasty, I'd go ahead and get the bow whether you draw or not. I'm sure you've read here that the PSMathoyttech is the best bow made .The 3D shoots during summer are fun and sometimes and eye-opener. Then there's archery deer season during the nice weather of September in the pines. Javies were made for archery gear. Good luck in the elk draw. With the earlier draw, you will have 5 months to practice with a bow, plenty for a dedicated new archer. RR
