Fortunate indeed. My college roommate's brother bought some reloading equipment, including powder. The guy he bought it from had put some pistol powder in a can labeled for rifle powder. The result was not good. Eve though he was wearing shooting glasses, he still suffered eye damage. For reasons similar to the above, I do not like to share reloading recipes or use someone else's handloads. What is "safe?" in one rifle, may not be in another. Doug~RR

Good Pack Needed ASAP!!!
Red Rabbit replied to azcouesandelk's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Christian and Jim, You might want to consider the J105 since you can adjust for torso length and it has a plastic back-sheet in addition to the aluminum stays for more rigidity with heavy loads. Also read where you can get some strap extensions from Eberlestock for really large loads. Doug~RR -
I have been using the DropZone on my LX for a few years with no problem. With the Trophy Taker, you may want the support with the deeper V, and put some moleskin or adhesive felt on it. Doug~RR

Birthday Girl

Happy Birthday Amanda! Enjoy your day. I'm sure Scott has a present hiding for you in 27. Doug -
Austin, what a nice season you are having. Congrats. Doug~RR

Just got back from a nice day behind Rica. Hunted about 4 sunny hours and have enough for a few dinners. We flushed a covey of about a dozen juvies about the size of sparrows from a prickly pear, and passed on shooting a couple other young birds. Doug~RR

I agree with Amanda about stepping up in size. My 2000 cid was always crammed. You can always use the compression straps on the larger pack if not completely loaded. I think the Kifaru Late season would be a great, quality pack choice, coupled with the cargo chair to haul out that coues. If your gonna pack in overnight, the Siwash would be good with light, compact camping gear. The front panel loading on the Siwash allows easier access to your stuff than a top loader. The Blacks Creek Alaskan Hunter, available at Sportsmans, is another consideration. Eberlestock J105? Adjustable suspension and expands to fit in your coues. Doug~RR

The profile of BHD did not give the name of Chris. BHDs name matched a person in Phoenix. CHD said he is in Kingman, iirc. I think BHD got jumped on, on MM, just like the outfitters and gov tag holders were badmouthed. RR

Kachina Village Bulls
Red Rabbit replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Two Guns, Hope your dad or you gets him, then. Perhaps there are genetics for those 5pts around here, and I saw a second very similar bull. I think the one you saw on your cam may be the match though, judging by the left eyeguard. RR -
These boys were behind the house this morning. 13 total. I figure those with a bull elk tag would enjoy the velvet. Doug~RR

I believe the 5-point in the bottom and second photo was taken by a Flagstaff archer in 6A West. Saw his European mount at the TR Taxidermy. RR -
TwoGuns, Congrats on some fine eating. 11M? Now for your dad to finish out on a high note. I'm not liking the looks of that broadhead if it was only a rib. Did you come across the broken blade upon cleaning her? Doug~RR

A lot of the roads leading to the wells will be gated and locked. A mountain bike may be handy. Bring chains for the truck in case its muddy. I had a 2B tag a few years ago, but ended up hunting in what is now 2C. RR

How do you prevent lense fogging on bino's
Red Rabbit replied to royerj1's topic in Optics and tripods
DB- good idea about using the chemical handwarmers in the bino pouch. Also, wipe the sweat from your face and eyelids before glassing. The antifog creme that snow skiers use on the goggles helps. I do not know how safe it is on the coatings. RR -
Way to go, again! That's a lotta elk in the freezer this year. RR

257 WBY- Flatter and a little less recoil than the 270 WSM, but less energy, with bullets of similar BC and SD. 264 Win Mag- Remington is to chamber their Sendero in a limited number this year. 270 WSM That said, I chose to have a 6.5 WSM made (still waiting to be completed) for a coues rifle. A 25 WSM would be similar in performance to the 257 WBY RR

Nice trailer at a great price. Looks like the side rails are removable? RR

Potential relocation areas
Red Rabbit replied to Kilimanjaro's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Have been through Shelby a few times on the way to or from Glacier NP. Bring your long underwear. Some good trout fishing on the Blackfoot Rez, and great hiking, fishing, and scenery in the park. What's your better half think about MT? RR -
Al Miller's 2006 rifle bull
Red Rabbit replied to bullwidgeon's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
7b north Looks nice in spite of some busted points. Character. I figured the weather change would get them going again. The bugling has been hit-n-miss for a few weeks. RR -
My rain can behind the house here in Flag shows about 5/8"; not as much as I thought, but still good to have. Sat should be a nice day. RR

TOO MUCH STUFF on this wilderness elk hunt in Colorado almost twenty years ago.

You can access thru Kings Anvil ranch to canyons like Solano and Redondo. No ATV's on the Kings anvil. Access into Thomas is good. Ranches like the Santa Margarita and Shaffer don't let you through, so its a long hike to get behind. Access into Brown is very limited, as the hike around the BANWR houses and no-hunt zones is nasty, brushy. Drive down to Sasabe and glass along the highway to find a canyon with terrain suitable to your ability. Look on the map to find the road to it, if accessible, and go for it. http://azgfd.com/h_f/hunting_units_36c.shtml Most are not prone to give specific spots where they hunt or where their friends hunt. The AZ Hunters Who Care cleanup is Oct 21 and would be a good chance to meet some hunters, help clean a ranch in 36c, generate good karma, and maybe get some good info while helping for a day. http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/in...amp;#entry45057 RR

Younghunter's post about his 280 got me to remember my first rifle. We have posted about our favorite rifles and cartridges, but not our first, iirc. What was your first rifle? Why or how did you get it? Chambering? Have you kept it or traded it away? Is it a family rifle for the generations? My first rifle was a Remington 700 BDL chambered in 280 (monikered 7mm Express back then) and purchased around 1984. I chose the cartridge because famous Texas deer writer John Wooters chose it for his first custom gun. I almost was persuaded to get a 270, but wanted it to be different than my friend's 270. Used it to shoot many whitetail in Texas and my first three Coues in Arizona. It was traded towards a Browning Stainless Stalker in 7mm Rem Mag when they first came out back around 1990. I just had to get the weather resistant stainless and tupperware stock that the Browning offered. Since there was no family sentimental value to the rifle, and its accuracy was deteriorating, it succumbed to the trade. My Dad did not hunt, so this first rifle was purchased on my own; No rifle to be handed down from my Dad. My cousin got my grandfather's pump 30-06 which he used in Wisconsin for deer, when he passed away. Doug~RR
