    Best Coues Caliber

Younghunter, My first rifle was a Remington 700 BDL chambered in 280 (monikered 7mm Express back then). I chose the cartridge because famous deer writer John Wooters chose it for his first custom gun. I almost was persuaded to get a 270, but wanted to different than my friends. Used it to shoot many whitetail in Texas and my first three coues in Arizona. It was traded towards a Browning Stainless Stalker in 7mm Rm Mag when they first came out back around 1990. Sometimes I have the urge to get another 280 to fill the void (Casey, you didn't read that). Doug~RR

    ADVICE ON QUADS

Bill, Sounds like a wise and more enjoyable redirection of funds. If you do get drawn for wapiti, certainly there are others on your hunt who will have ATV's to use or borrow. Doug~RR

    Swarovski 10x50 SLC NEW

The 10x50 SLC new are $1599 at BearBasin.com I guess one could buy a new pair for 1600 and enjoy the extra 350 bucks spent on removing them from the box. Kinda like driving a new car off the lot. Coues 7 has a decent deal for someone wanting great glass. RR.

    Best Coues Caliber

257 Weatherby, 25 WSM, 6.5 WSM, 7 STW, 7 RUM ??? Whatever cartridge each person can shoot comfortably and accurately within their own deadly range gets my vote. All mentioned will do the job at ranges beyond most shooters' capabilities. (except maybe my 218 Bee) RR

    tripod adapter

Leica makes a tripod adapter, on the same principle of the old Websters. One came with my Duovids, and hold them securely. Talk to Doug at Camera Land. BearBasin lists them for $89. The Outdoorsman might have them. http://www.leica-camera.us/hunting_optics/...sories/409.html RR
  7. Mark, Way to hang in there and finally get your target buck. Good story. RR

who hunts with ballistic tip ammo?

1gotaway- the 140 in a 270 should do fine. If it's in a 7mm, I'd choose the 160gr over the 140 for more energy on the elk. The Accubonds have been giving expansion and penetration almost similar to the Partition, from the test reports I've seen.

Lots of us hunting 23 this year

CB, Are you going to try and pick up a bear tag this year? RR

who hunts with ballistic tip ammo?

The Nosler Ballistic tips have taken 8 coues from my 270, 280 and 7RM. All were lung shots. Penetration was compltely through, so no bullets were recovered. I did strangely get some bloodshot jelly in the near shoulder when the 270's 140 BT hit 2" behind the shoulder from 250 yards. I usually expect some bloodshot on the offside. The last three hunts I have carried TSX's in a 300 WSM, but have not unleashed the beast. If you are looking for a less explosive bullet than the Ballistic Tip, the TSX or Accubond should be worthy of good accuracy, high ballistic coefficient and more controlled expansion. RR

    Cleaning binos

Here is a quote from my Leupy manual on how to clean your lenses: "Leupold scope lenses are coated to reduce light reflections and light scattering thus increasing light transmission through the scope. They should be cleaned as carefully as you would a camera lens. Begin by using a lens brush to remove dust and then pure alcohol, high-grade glass cleaner, or pure water on a cotton swab." From the Kodak website: "Don't use eyeglass tissues to clean a camera lens. Eyeglass tissues contain a chemical that can ruin the special coatings on a camera lens." (I wonder what the harmful chemicals are?) I usually brush off the dust with the hair brush end of the Lenspen (a small can of compressed air works also) and then wet a piece of lens tissue with camera lens cleaning fluid, and rub gently in a circular motion. I have read where a microfiber clothe is better than lens tissue, so will give it a try. I don't use the pad end of a Lenspen, or a shirt-tail (cringe) as they may have small imbedded grit. Doug~RR
  13. Be sure to post pics of your new spread as it develops, and of your adventures in the Wyoming outdoors. One thought is to purchase your AZ lifetime license before moving so you will not have to purchase an expensive non-resident license each year you apply back in AZ. Doug~RR

    Pistol for sale!!

You should be able to "as new" pricing since less than a clip has probably been fired. Or is this one of those trick-shot pistols they use for firing while looking in a mirror? RR
  15. Terry, My calendar, previously empty that weekend, is now filled for 18/20 Jr Camp. E-mail the details to me when you get them, bitte. If there is something I can do ahead of time , call me. (928) 525-9804 Doug~RR
  16. Terry, Any info about where the youth camps will be located in 36a and 18/20, and if ADA will be helping with one on the Kaibab Jr hunt? It seems that the 36 and 18/20 hunts are the same weekend; who will be in charge of each camp? Doug~RR

Christian, Judging from the pics, your new digiscoping outfit is working well for you. What are your opinions about it so far? Doug~RR

    My First Arizona Antelope

Congrantelope Brian! I can relate to the feeling when the wind shifts and hits the back of the neck and the speedgoat boogies. Good job on the pics. I notice you have the Simms DeResonator on your barrel; did it make a difference? Doug~RR

    New Mexico Antelope

Nice prongs. Hard to tell from the pics, but seems to have some good mass also. How'd he get the nickname yo-yo? RR

    New Mexico Antelope

Terry, Beautiful speed goat. If you and Matt keep posting those pics like that, I can see my wallet being lighter next year. Darn sure will have to win the lottery to beat AZ's odds, even with 16 bogus points. Any side view pics of the goat (the antelope, not you ) Doug~RR

    new to state salt ??

Charlie, Welcome. I usually purchase the trace mineral salt in 50# bags from a feed store, dig a hole and pour in the salt ( I find half a bag is enough), and dissolve with 5 gallons of water. I find the granulated works better as no one can remove as it is not a block, and is less used/attracted by cattle. Plus, it dissolves into the soil, dirt better to establish a permanent site. Find a trail in a hidden/off the human trail area to establish your lick. Next to a tank will just invite other hunters. It may be too late for this fall to establish a good pattern, but put it in anyway and you will have established it for next season. But then again, near those rubs you may have a buck find it and use it tomorrow. Go for it and good luck. Doug~RR

    Was that your camera?

Some one told me to put it low to take a pictures of the links. Maybe he meant lynx. Dunno. Was told that they have links/lynx up north, so I thought 22north would be far enuf. RR
  25. Those are some real nice pics there, Amanda. I went out today around Apache Maid checking tanks and looking for coues tracks, and to run Rica along the ATV (gotta get her in shape so Scott does not walk her to death on the quail hunt ). The snakeweed, globe mallow and indain paintbrush were in bloom.
