Josh, nice goat and pic. A fun hunt for sure. Were the legs near the carcass? Doug~RR

Looks pretty nice, Scott. Them antelope are beautiful creatures. -
Jim, Glad you got a nice moose to cap an Alaskan trip and adventure. Nice pics, especially the dew-covered spider web in the sunlight. At least in the pics, I see no headnets were worn to keep the flying critters away from the face. Just the skeeters around Cascade Lake and up Slough Creek in Yellowstone have driven me nuts. If your group was billed for the new Zodiac, did you draw straws to see who gets to take her home ? Doug~RR

From the Nosler Website: Are Lubalox and Moly the same? NO, Lubalox (CT Ballistic Tip) is an oxide-based coating, which reduces fouling and allows more shooting between cleanings, also Lubalox does not buildup in the barrel and requires only normal cleaning procedures. Moly (CT Fail Safe & Partition Gold) is a molybdenum disulfide coating which reduces fouling and friction. Moly requires a barrel be conditioned by shooting several rounds after cleaning and special cleaning procedures. Accuracy with non-coated bullets may not be up to par in a Moly conditioned barrel.

Bass, You mentioned an old teacher, so don't know if he's hep on hauling an elk on his back out of the quiet area. If so, one thought would be to use a boat to access the quiet area across the upper lake. PM sent. RR

Lubalox is not moly, so you should not have all the problems associated with moly. I don't know what it is; wonder if it is some type of teflon based coating. Sounds like you have a good case for an experiment. Shoot and measure some groups with your regular jacketed bulleted load, clean the barrel, shoot the Lubalox load, then shoot the jacketed again without cleaning for comparison. Doug~RR

North Kaibab Hunt
Red Rabbit replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Casey, I camped in the same spot Saturday night as last year. Marble View would be a great spot with a fantastic view... if there was no wind. Met three guys who were camped up the road which you and Scott were displaced from. They had not seen a bird there. I saw only three deer: a doe, fawn, and 3 point. No turkey. Doug~RR -
Good luck in December. Nice dream buck to keep you awake for the next two months and two rifle seasons. RR

Flagstaff Airport reported 0.45" yesterday, 9/14. I got about 3/4" in my rain can in Kachina. Looked from the radar that most was in a band that swept through Flag. Tusayan got 0.2" yesterday. Good luck on your hunts up in 9. Look for some active wallows to sit midday rather than sit in camp waiting for the evening. RR

I don't have an archery tag, and it still gets my blood pumping. My first thought after seeing the pic was "Son of Twister" The raffle hunter should be very pleased and I imagine that the story will be out on DVD and published in a mag. TLH, was this the bull you were scouting? Doug~RR

Younghunter, My first rifle was a Remington 700 BDL chambered in 280 (monikered 7mm Express back then). I chose the cartridge because famous deer writer John Wooters chose it for his first custom gun. I almost was persuaded to get a 270, but wanted to different than my friends. Used it to shoot many whitetail in Texas and my first three coues in Arizona. It was traded towards a Browning Stainless Stalker in 7mm Rm Mag when they first came out back around 1990. Sometimes I have the urge to get another 280 to fill the void (Casey, you didn't read that). Doug~RR

I always had mine in a hard case and bunji corded to the front rack. RR

Bill, Sounds like a wise and more enjoyable redirection of funds. If you do get drawn for wapiti, certainly there are others on your hunt who will have ATV's to use or borrow. Doug~RR

The 10x50 SLC new are $1599 at BearBasin.com I guess one could buy a new pair for 1600 and enjoy the extra 350 bucks spent on removing them from the box. Kinda like driving a new car off the lot. Coues 7 has a decent deal for someone wanting great glass. RR.

257 Weatherby, 25 WSM, 6.5 WSM, 7 STW, 7 RUM ??? Whatever cartridge each person can shoot comfortably and accurately within their own deadly range gets my vote. All mentioned will do the job at ranges beyond most shooters' capabilities. (except maybe my 218 Bee) RR

Leica makes a tripod adapter, on the same principle of the old Websters. One came with my Duovids, and hold them securely. Talk to Doug at Camera Land. BearBasin lists them for $89. The Outdoorsman might have them. http://www.leica-camera.us/hunting_optics/...sories/409.html RR

Mark, Way to hang in there and finally get your target buck. Good story. RR -
who hunts with ballistic tip ammo?
Red Rabbit replied to AZ RANGER's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
1gotaway- the 140 in a 270 should do fine. If it's in a 7mm, I'd choose the 160gr over the 140 for more energy on the elk. The Accubonds have been giving expansion and penetration almost similar to the Partition, from the test reports I've seen. -
Lots of us hunting 23 this year

CB, Are you going to try and pick up a bear tag this year? RR -
who hunts with ballistic tip ammo?
Red Rabbit replied to AZ RANGER's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
The Nosler Ballistic tips have taken 8 coues from my 270, 280 and 7RM. All were lung shots. Penetration was compltely through, so no bullets were recovered. I did strangely get some bloodshot jelly in the near shoulder when the 270's 140 BT hit 2" behind the shoulder from 250 yards. I usually expect some bloodshot on the offside. The last three hunts I have carried TSX's in a 300 WSM, but have not unleashed the beast. If you are looking for a less explosive bullet than the Ballistic Tip, the TSX or Accubond should be worthy of good accuracy, high ballistic coefficient and more controlled expansion. RR -

Here is a quote from my Leupy manual on how to clean your lenses: "Leupold scope lenses are coated to reduce light reflections and light scattering thus increasing light transmission through the scope. They should be cleaned as carefully as you would a camera lens. Begin by using a lens brush to remove dust and then pure alcohol, high-grade glass cleaner, or pure water on a cotton swab." From the Kodak website: "Don't use eyeglass tissues to clean a camera lens. Eyeglass tissues contain a chemical that can ruin the special coatings on a camera lens." (I wonder what the harmful chemicals are?) I usually brush off the dust with the hair brush end of the Lenspen (a small can of compressed air works also) and then wet a piece of lens tissue with camera lens cleaning fluid, and rub gently in a circular motion. I have read where a microfiber clothe is better than lens tissue, so will give it a try. I don't use the pad end of a Lenspen, or a shirt-tail (cringe) as they may have small imbedded grit. Doug~RR

Hey Buddy, can you spare some change?
Red Rabbit replied to az4life's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Be sure to post pics of your new spread as it develops, and of your adventures in the Wyoming outdoors. One thought is to purchase your AZ lifetime license before moving so you will not have to purchase an expensive non-resident license each year you apply back in AZ. Doug~RR
