Not a ton of water in the lake either most years. Lot more hikers, mtn bikers, campers, cabins in the area in the last 25 years too.

This is an interesting article about the effect of human disturbance during elk calving. https://www.hcn.org/articles/wildlife-hiking-trails-are-a-path-to-destruction-for-colorado-elk-vail?fbclid=IwAR3oc5A-IwbATC43JqLMGWpMkFqkkFPnULL2umbnrNnC0UmIT7E0KAQ2Tfk I recall hearing that Bismark Lake on the northwest side of the SF Peaks was once the biggest elk calving spot in the state.

What song are you liking and listening to these days? With modern country stinking up the sewers with its pop, hip hop, tractor rap crap, I have found myself listing to more blue grass and classic country and rock. But this song has caught my attention lately with its story and music.

I am excited today as I got to spend some time in the pen with my new pup. "Clover" is a German wire-haired pointer like Rica was. I sense that good times, adventures and quail hunts lie ahead. The pups are five weeks old today, so it will be another three before the home schooling begins.

Meet Clover
Red Rabbit replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
BusterAZ, A friend in Chino Valley has a female GWP and bred it with a male from Flagstaff. He said he will be having his female spayed now though. Have a fun quail season this year with your GWP. Clover will only be 9 months old come mearns season, so hope to just get out for her to have fun and find some birds. -
These look interesting to make shooting stix from trekking poles. May eliminate carrying a bipod or separate shooting sticks. (I saw this on another hunting website so am passing along the info. I am not affiliated with the mfg.) https://www.wiserprecision.com/products/quick-stix

If you are going to be out all day, at least you can know what times to NOT take a nap. 😉 http://www.solunarforecast.com/solunarcalendar.aspx I recall seeing lotsa deer activity when the full moon rose right at sunset.

Maybe hunt the unit in which you applied for antelope as the fawns always need help.

Sounds like you are in good hands with your friend. I'd be sure to have some good 12 or 15x binos on a tripod, and a foam pad to sit on too.

If you are doing a lot of sand, I would opt for wide profile unless you like airing down. I have 75's, but 70's would be better for sand. Currents are BFG AT. had some Goodyear DuraTracs,, but the sidewalls were too flexible even on load range E, although I liked the tread for off pavement. Due to the flexing Duratrac sidewalls, the truck seemed to float/sway from side to side over the road.

We have had threads on what has been good gear, what's the best____, etc. But, what is the most worthless piece of hunting gear that is being marketed that has duped U into wasting $$$ ? (after the Butt-Out Tool, of course )

Based on the reviews that the tract Toric 10x42 received, I would be interested in seeing the Tract 12.5x50. I do not see the Swaros in my cards this fall. https://www.tractoptics.com/products/binoculars/toric-12.5x50-schott-ht

The leftover list seems to shrink every year. https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/azgfd-portal-wordpress-pantheon/wp-content/uploads/archive/leftovers-fall-2019.pdf

Meet Clover

Clover drew her first Coues tag- 6A October. She's 15 weeks and 28 pounds now. -

I spent last evening and this morning overlooking Mormon Lake. There is still plenty of water, which kept the herds of elk closer to camera range, but still a long way out even at 500mm. There were two large groups of elk and many groups of a few. I did expect to see more calves for the number of cows though.

Nice rifle and price.

It is either 12B late or 6A Oct WT. With only 2 BP, I was not expecting to be drawn

Full length or neck sizing?
Red Rabbit replied to Lazy-H98's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I have been using a FL die to just partially resize and bump the shoulder rather than fully FL resize. I have not have any feeding/chambering issues this way, but one should feed their ammo before a hunt to check for any problems. I have purchased factory ammo with the neck mouth bent back so obviously it would not chamber. -
If you had one brand choice for AZ camo set ( pants+ shirt) which would you pick?
Red Rabbit replied to Gut Pile's topic in Other Hunting Gear
I'll take a pair of good upland brush pants to combat the catclaw. I think the camo pattern of the upper will be determined by the darkness/lightness of the vegetation if you are hunting close for archery or turkey. -
Just a little late on closing the barn door. https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/tonto/news-events/?cid=FSEPRD638469

What’s everyone hoping for...
Red Rabbit replied to Flatlander's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Late MD hunt for a long shot, and Oct WT for reality.
