AFRICA BOUND!!!
Red Rabbit replied to Kilimanjaro's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Here's to great honeymoon for Bonnie n U. Enjoy the ballon ride. Looking forward to the stories and pics. Vielen Gluck. Doug ~RR -
Josh, I did like them. I am putting the Minox 15 and Leica 10x50 towards a pair of Duovid 10+15 to save almost 3 lbs. Once you hit 50, those coues hills grow taller and steeper with all that active geology occuring. RR

Jake, Welcome to CWT. There was a thread about two years ago about 23. A search should find it. I hunted the south side of Brushy, but so did a lot of others. Saw a few coues, but more muleys. RR

antler point restrictions
Red Rabbit replied to fatfootdoc's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
NM's neighbor to the north enacted point restrictions several years ago for both deer and elk in the hopes of generating more quality. Colorado has kept the elk restrictions, but dropped the point requirements for muleys as it did not help the age structures and quality. IIRC, too many two-points were left in the field. Surely, NM is not reinventing the squared wheel ? RR -
Probably this fire just south of Jacob Lake: Warm (Kaibab National Forest): 5,400 acres. This fire is three miles south of Jacob Lake. This lightning caused WFU is being managed to accomplish resource objectives. Residences, the Jacob Lake developed area, a historic ranger station, and campgrounds remain threatened. Increased fire behavior with spotting up to 1,000 feet and isolated torching were reported . Information: Visit the Southwest Area Incident Information web site. http://www.nifc.gov/fireinfo/nfn.html I think there was also a fire out by Crazy Jug.

Unsuccessful for muleys and coues. Guess I'm going to Alaska. RR

Scott, Guess I shouldn't look at last year's regs for this year's prices. My mistake. RR
-
Congrats on the tag. The regs list a bull tag as $481. I'm ????? Doug ~RR

When I drove through Mogollon about 10 years ago, I saw a few bleached antlers and skulls hanging on some sheds and porches. Nothing new, so guess they died out in the area decades ago RR.
-
Scott, I thought you already tried the cliff trick with not so favorable results. Have a great honeymoon. RR

What's your favorite thing about AZ?
Red Rabbit replied to stanley's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
To me it's that AZ it's the vast amount of open public lands that offers a wide range of outdoor activities in a wide variety of geological and climatic zones. Sure, there are states with better bird hunting, or whitewater kayaking, or alpine mountains, or skiing, or hunting for mule deer, antelope, prairie dogs, or trout fishing, or cheaper housing. But AZ has to be a top contender for the all-around award though. RR -
This is a photo of my backpack camp back in '94 after I hiked in alone the second weekend. It rained the first few days of the season, and most went home soaked and cold due to leaky tents and cheap ponchos, and did not want to return. I was rewarded with a nice 102" three point. Doug ~RR

The Off Season
Red Rabbit replied to ScottAdams's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Looks like some fine eating. Cornmeal batter, hush puppies... yumm Did you put in for NM 23 again? RR -
Since I'm crazy from being hit in the head with a pack all these years , I'll throw out another option: the Mystery Ranch Nice frame with bag and load carrier. http://www.mysteryranch.com/catalog/index....&products_id=21 I'll be up in Kodiak this fall hunting Sitkas and will need to carry out the whole tamale with the hunting gear in one trip. I am considering this setup or the Kifaru. Wait... I do remember Casey saying something about volunteering to be a sherpa Doug~RR

The Kifaru with cargo chair gets some of the highest ratings. http://kifaru.net/BACKPAKS.HTM RR

Thanks for the pics. They strike an urge. Most of those jeep trails between Lake City, Silverton and Ouray are passible in a 4WD pick-em-up, although I did not try the Black Bear trail as I heeded the warnings. Fantastic country to spend lotsa time in whether behind the wheel or atop the sole. RR

Wish me luck..

Scott, May God bless you and Bonnie. Doug~RR -
Would like to send it back freight collect to Vicente

I sat down last night and changed my mind 20 times about elk and deer. Figure that I will apply online next week, which will allow more time to talk with friends and vascilllate some more. The computers may overload on the 13th, like NM's did, so don't wait till the last minute. Doug~RR
