    Nov. unit 33

Scottyboy, I wish I could help you, but I have no knowledge of 33 . I am assuming you have been to the g&f website and have looked at the hunt unit report. Doug/RedRabbit
  3. Judge Broomfield ruled that AZ G&F must fix the draw immediately, and not next year as G&F petitioned. Thus, the commission will issue another 805 bull elk and deer tags on top of those issued in the original draw. http://www.azgfd.com/artman/publish/article_126.shtml

    !!!!!!!RESULTS ARE OUT!!!!

I will be down in the Babo's come November chasin' coues. I also drew an archery cow tag in 7M.. This should be a fun hunt with the longbow (but I'll use the 300wsm on the coues). No turkey, sheep, or antelope. May fortune smile upon the rest of you. Doug/Red Rabbit

    Arizona looses court case!

Brett, I'll trade my hoochie mama for your Swaros. j/k Seriously, it's been posted here and elsewhere that the nonresident fees need a substantial increase. While this retaliatory action may feel good, it will be detrimental to hunting in general and the long run. In no way, should hunting become a rich man's endeavor. I know more nonresident hunters who are our family members and friends than are nonresidents who contract with Taulmann. I have not put in for some nonresident tags due to the $750-$1000 price. I would like to dream of an out-of-state moose tag, but don't keep me going into r.e.m. sleep. Doug/RedRabbit

    Arizona looses court case!

At one time, lloooooonnnnggg time ago, George was a pharmeucist in Flagstaff who enjoyed hunting. He moved to Albequerque, thought of a way to make money off of hunting, and sold his soul to the devil. While the road to heck may be paved with good intentions, his paving stones have no goodness in them. I personally hope he has sealed his doom, since what he has done to hunting has not been in its best interests, only his and his bank account. Arizona is not his only target state, as Kansas is dealing with him also. I think that we also need to express our displeasure with companies like Primos and the Outdoor Channel, who support his "dis"service. Doug/RedRabbit

    new winchester rifle

Its ballistics are virtually identical to the 25-06. I can see it having some feeding problems due to its very short and fat case dimensions. You might check out www. shortmags.org for more info.

    Draw Results?

My draw results for antelope were unsuccesssful . I did not put in for deer in NM. could there be an OTC deer tag in my future if AZ is stingy?

    What to do

I do not feel that having a trail camera indicates that a person intends to hunt that spot and that you should move on. Maybe the spot is just being scouted. Also, we each have a chance("right")to hunt a spot and it is first come-first served. If you hunt the spot and nobody shows up-great. If anothe person appears, you can work out an agreement. This situation likens to the water tank wars in unit 9 for archery elk where hunters setup multiple stands to "claim" a spot yet never hunt it. Been there, seen that. It can get real ugly, and I don't want to be a part of it. Doug/RedRabbit

    Need advice on handguns

The first 357 I shot was a Colt Python. smooth trigger and grouped well with manageable recoil. Thought I'd always want to get one. I found (and succumbed to) a S&W model 686(stainless) in 357 with 4" barrel about a year ago used in the local gun shop. I shoots and balances well. The Hogue grips with finger grooves fit my hand well. I like it better than my Ruger SuperBlackhawk in 44mag. Practicing with 38 specials are much more pleasant than using the 357 magnum loads. A 6" barrel would work well also. The 686 is my recommendation.

    Carp?

Matt, welcome. I vote for the muley drop, considering the lack of eyeguards and long G-2. Doug/RedRabbit

    Draw Results?

Someone said that NM has started to hit the credit cards.
  15. Are you wearing rubber gloves when you take the film out of the camera? Maybe he smells your scent. Maybe wipe the camera housing off with Scent Shield. Bucks and bears, and cinnamon bears, sounds like you have a couple of good tanks. Doug/RedRabbit

    Happy Birhday Standman

Happy Birthday! I'll have a Becks for your celebration. Did you blow out all your candles so you will draw a tag? Doug/RedRabbit

    caliber ?

Coues Addict, I bought a Supergrade in 300 winnie about 5 years ago. It is choosy to its diet, but for factory loads, it shoots 5-shot moa with Hornady Heavy Mag 180 gr SP, and 1.5" ave with Federal Classic (3-shot). For Handloads, it likes 168 Sierra Match Kings, and Nosler CT 180 gr partitions. Those 168 MKHPs could be good coues medicine. Took it to Colorado once for an elk hunt, but no bulls to be seen. It has better than average wood for a supergrade, and I have had it pillar bedded and then glass bedded. Doug/RedRabbit

    caliber ?

Welcome AZ Shooter! Have you considered building a 6.5 WSM? I think this would be a great coues cartridge. I am toying with the idea of having a 270 or 300 WSM rebarrelled when Winchester releases their Model 70 Supergrades in WSMs. When looking at ballistic tables, I have noticed that the slower, heavier bullets gain in wind drift about what they lose in drop to the faster, lighter bullet out of the same gun. Since I think it is harder to judge the wind than the distance (with the advent of laser rangefinders), I think I would choose a heavier bullet with a higher B.C. Doug/RedRabbit

What units did you all put in for?

After the hopeful and optimistic 13b first choice(if one knows they won't get drawn, why put in, right?), I put in for 36c November second choice. I did not put in for any October hunts #3, 4 or 5 since I have a mule deer hunt in Utah at that time. Doug/RedRabbit

    Unit 21

Ah, heck. Back in Texas, we useta use those fish for bait! Lotsa good eatin there. I can taste it now, hushpuppies and all. Nice catfish!
  21. Like my friends son who plays basketball, you might consider the October hunt which is before BB starts. You also stand a real good chance of being drawn, as opposed to the 15-20% draw for the December hunt.
  22. A coues hunt with Kirk Kelso will be shown on an episode of Primos Truth About Hunting. It will air Today, Friday 5/21 at 12am and again Sunday 5/23 at 7:30 am. Check the times to be sure if it as AZ time or Mountain Daylight-savings time. I caught the tail end of the coues hunt last night and almost didn't pay attention as the on-screen program guide only listed the first two hunts in Alabama and Texas. Doug/RedRabbit
  23. I got up early to watch and tape the show, and it lasted what seemed to be only 5 minutes. Basically, they crested a ridge to start the show, spotted a buck, missed a shot, then made a shot. Kirk Kelso then described the coues. End of hunt. Hope there is more footage for a longer show. Anyone else get to see the show? Doug/RedRabbit
  24. I saw on the Dish Network guie that the show is on at 4:30 am Sunday morning, AZ time.
  25. Should I get drawn for 36c again, I am considering backpacking into a canyon and leaving the truck behind. Have you, or do you know of someone, had camp or vehicle being victimized while out hunting the past few years in unit 36c or b? While I have not had any problems during the last several hunts, I am becoming increasingly leary. Doug/RedRabbit
