Congrats on the good eats and successful hunts

Carbon fiber tripods alone without a head will be over your spartan budget. Even a preferred Manfrotto 700RC2 fluid head for glassing is 75 bucks, and that is low end for a fluid head I was thinking the MeFoto line may be a possibility for your specs https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?ci=2635&fct=fct_brand_name%7cmefoto%2bfct_material_774%7caluminum&N=4075788742&

I pretty much gave up on The Weather Channel TWC. Mostly I rely on NOAA. But you are right in that more than a few days out the forecasts are very malleable. http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=35.19820000000004&lon=-111.65129999999999#.WgjuVnZrycw

Looking for recommendations on a builder
Red Rabbit replied to yotebuster's topic in Long Range Shooting
Yotebuster, I sent you a PM -
I would have preferably taken the quartering towards, and aimed at the front point of the shoulder and 1/3 up. Bet it was cool calling in that lion.

nice mule deer buck. How close were you when he decided to stand up?

Snow and rain may make it interesting on the two-track roads. If it comes in on Saturday (3-5" snow possibly for Flag?), water will still be key on the Friday opener. Still 10 days out is a long way out for the weather forecasting ouija boards. Good luck out there.

SWFA has their SS scopes on sale.

The Cabelas BF prices start today, Wed 11/24, so no need to wait til the Friday masses. https://www.bfads.net/stores/cabelas/ads/black-friday/page-7#viewer

Doug posted on another website forum that CL decided to pursue other avenues and would not be handling Vortex anymore.

NOAA's forecast discussion this morning said they do not expect any precip for at least 10 days. It will be 70 here in Flagstaff by the end of the week. I would concentrate on areas around water if sitting does not bore you to death.

For prairie dogs, a consideration may be a 17HMR (not that 10/22s are not a load of fun).

Wear gloves and eye goggles when using the whitening paste

Well the big desert buck is all boiled out and white!
Red Rabbit replied to Beaton's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
Very nice desert buck. Your co-worker should be ecstatic. -
Another powder to try would be Ramshot TAC. I once tried loading a 60 gr partition for a javelina hunt in my 1-14" 22-250, but the bullet key-holed at 100 yards. Current load is using 50gr Hornady V-max, TAC and Fed210M.

Thanks all for the comments. Flatlander- Jackson Hole, DuBois or Hoback would be nice places to live. BigBrowns- that herd of bison was right by the side of the road. So many were packed together it was hard to isolate one.

Avoiding cactus
Red Rabbit replied to Trevvamos's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Hunt where there is no cholla. Rica figured out prickly pear, but never learned about cholla or porcupines. -
I drew a permit for 6A archery javelina. No turkey tag was drawn this year.

Purchased the antelope point back in September. Back up to 6 points now. Hoping for a mild winter in WY this year.

Should be some good eating, even if his antlers are on backwards. Did the core separate from the jacket in the SST?

Adjustable Bases and Rings
Red Rabbit replied to IA Born's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
My guess is that the screw holes are not true as 300RUM said. You could try the windage adjustable bases and new rings. I would shoot it first and try adjusting the scope before buying new bases/rings though, in case the bore sighter is way off -
Looks like the hunt was pretty fun and good memories were made. Congrats to Auggie.

Hornady 129 grain SST- any experience
Red Rabbit replied to azhuntnut's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I used the 129 SST in a 260 Rem on an antelope in Utah several years ago. Hit him in the spine at 450 yards, so the exit was a little "open". -
A good friend was told all the powder burns in 16-18" in a 30-06, so he cut off the barrel to 18" to save weight and then added a brake to cut recoil in his son's 30-06. It is a much louder and flashier SOB than his wife's 22" 30-06 with brake. The powder may have burned, but the gasses are still expanding in a longer barrel to provide fps.
