How Many Bonus Points Did It Take to Draw?
Red Rabbit replied to Desertdweller62's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I drew last year for 33 Dec with 7 points, but I was applying with a NR friend -
Good news and blessing from many angles. Jared, where's the green skull cap ;-)

I went out this morning to Mormon Lake hoping to photograph some elk in the lake bed. I did not glass up one elk, which struck me as strange. Good luck on the rest of your hunt.

Casey, I'm looking for 215M also. Ruffs is out, as is Pistol Parlor and SW. SW has Rem 9 1/2M

Snow? think 4wd. Something about cruising on fresh snow in the forest.

Coues7, Ruff's Precision Gunworks will be doing the work- chambering, threading, lapping, pillar bedding, cerakote, etc. Barrel will be 24", 1in8 twist with same as factory contour. Thanks BC and M.

Tried to run your favorite round through it, but my app would'nt accept 7/08 as a real caliber. My phone laughed at me. Loved both of these comments for a good laff.

Labor Day weekend was the opening of blue grouse in Arizona. Rica and I went to the north Kaibab. Saturday was real windy and 3 historically productive spots produced nothing except one moment of birdiness. After a few days in Grand Canyon National Park, a return to another favorite spot produced nothing but a nice walk. Fortunately, the shooting of landscapes was much better. Back in the Saddle Sunset at the head of the Nankoweap Trail Royal Storm A thunder and hailstorm approaches Cape Royal. Wotan's Fury At this point, I decided it was best to leave the exposed point and hustle back to the truck. Royal Rise Sunrise on Labor Day provided nice skies and purple/magenta tones. The elk are beginning to bugle and a photo trip for fall aspen colors in southwest Colorado is only two weeks away.

it is a lot like hunting to me- studying maps, weather reports, google earth, tips from friends, scouting spots in mid-day
-
Thanks. Yes, will concentrate around Ridgeway. I've been reading about how the moisture this year has produced a fungus that is affecting the leaves closer to Denver. I have not heard much about southwest CO yet.

Congrats on a nice buck with some extra character points.

For the past few years since I was infected with a landscape photography bug, I have tried going to the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado in late July for wildflowers. This year, a week was spent in American Basin, Velocity basin, Stoney Pass and Red Mountain. Some more images are in a gallery on my photo website. San Juan Summer Gallery Stoney Pass Sunset

I was with Scottyboy and his friend when his friend shot a coues at 390 yards with a 53gr TSX in a 223WSSM (similar ballistics to 22-250) One shot kill, broadside into the lungs.

Can't wait to chase some quail!
Red Rabbit replied to AmericanThunder's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Getting ready. Rica missed last season due to ACL surgery. She's 13, so we'll both take it slow. -
No bad news here. While at the Flagstaff office getting a bear permit and migratory bird stamp, the friendly lady looked up my info and found I was drawn for the Thanksgiving hunt in 35A. Coues for me at first, and Mearns for Rica on the second weekend. The 35A hunt was my first choice on the leftover app.

Best rifle cartridge for open terrain - Unit 21 Whitetail hunt
Red Rabbit replied to Desert Rat's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
You can get the 6.5 Creedmoor in the Ruger American or Hawkeye, and several Savage Arms models. Hornady has a handful of different factory loads. -
Overcast skies gave some nice soft lighting on these bull elk seen this past July 4th weekend. Nikon D810, Tamron 150-600

Brent, that's a lot of fall turkey tags for $243

Thanks for the comments. Bob, yes he is in U10, pending a long migration ;-) It will be nice to see these bulls again, later this month and after they rub, if they can be located again. All of you with tags this year may see some good racks in your sights.

This past weekend, with possibly the last of unusual June storms in Arizona, I spent a few days on the Paria Plateau outside of Page. Most of the lens time was behind the new Nikon 14-24mm purchased from Mark at CameraLand. The first morning sunrise brought a rainbow over iconic Horseshoe Bend. After driving to Kanab, Utah and getting a permit for Coyote Buttes, I focused on the yellow mule ear flowers that bloom this time of year. There were plenty of white primrose and magenta pink prickly pear blooms also. The final time was spent at a favorite location of convoluted sandstone atop the plateau. This scene with the towering clouds begged for B&W.
