    A Navajo Canyon

With rain and clouds forecast for all of this week, two friends and I headed to northern Arizona for a couple of days of photography near the Utah border. We stopped at this canyon on the Navajo Reservation on the way home to Flagstaff. The sunlight broke though and cooperated for about 15 minutes before hiding again behind the clouds for the rest of the evening.

    upper salt questions

If you are thinking of putting in at the Salt River Bridge at Hwy 60 down through the wilderness, you need to have drawn a permit. You might be able to call the FS and see if any cancellations are available There are also some class 4 rapids. From Gleason Flat/219 to 288 is 13 river miles. My guidebook says that on has to carry gear 0.2 mile down to the river at private property on 219. The Verde is getting low, only 100 cfs near Beasly Flat and 150cfs above Horseshoe, so a float would be maybe 5 days. http://waterdata.usgs.gov/az/nwis/current/?type=flow

Why do people want to hunt Goulds so bad?

Must be the 40mph winds at 6AM here in Flagstaff
  9. Conditions Friday invoked a night-time photo visit to Sedona as the forecast was for clear skies, no moon, and the Milky Way to sweep across the southeastern sky. Unfortunately, we're a little too far south for the aurora, but we do get the glow of light pollution from Phoenix 100 miles away  . Taken at 3 AM. Earlier that evening, there were some turbulent clouds overhead. These clouds made for an interesting sky above iconic Cathedral Rock. (The clouds must have spawned a powerful tornado, as a few houses were cy-cloned right out of these images ) There was a gap between the clouds and earth on the western horizon. It allowed a nice red light to cast upon Cathedral, but unfortunately the light did not catch the clouds above. Thanks for looking.

Thanks for the comments. I did not draw an elk tag, so you'll be stuck looking at more landscape photos this year as I stalk the mighty elusive rock

    which bino

For an archery elk hunt (closer range in the timber/cedars), I would definitely want a pair with lower magnification, larger FOV than 12x

  20. As the year 2012 closes, it is time to put together a selection of images from this year that are among my favorites. I have been lucky to have gone to many scenic places in the southwest this past year, so picking the top images was difficult. Here is a link to the selected dozen images: Best of 2012 Images May 2013 be kind and healthy to y'all. Doug

    Stormlight

Northern Arizona may have seen its last significant snow storm this past weekend. Flagstaff received 15-18" of the white stuff, Sedona had a few inches on the Red Rocks, and the Grand Canyon had 4". Winter storms draw me north for the grandeur, even though Sedona received more snow. The light was about as good as I have seen at the canyon. Winter storms at the canyon are my favorite, so I hope we receive another spring snow. Here are a few chosen images and a link to my gallery with more. Angels Light A swath of light passes across Bright Angel Canyon Zoroaster Red The sun peeked between a gap between the clouds and the western horizon to produce some very red light on the temples. The Grand Canyon

Garth gave me the impetus to put some images into a slideshow, which I had not done before. These 90 seconds are the result of hours of trial and error (lotsa error=hours ). My laptop's 4MB of RAM are not made for doing this. Anyway, here is a test run, so we're open to critique. http://vimeo.com/61121125
