Carbon fiber tripods
Red Rabbit replied to elkhunter's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
The ProMaster tripod that Amanda sells has received good reviews. Adorama sells their Flashpoint line of CF tripods that are more budget oriented. Manfrotto recently released the 290 series of CF trippods that not too spendy for CF (as you know, CF prices may approach $1k). http://www.manfrotto.us/photo-tripods-290-series The CF can be a little lighter, stiffer, transmit less vibration, and not as cold-to-the-touch as comparably-sized aluminum models. -
Sarah, congrats to you again. deja vu http://www.coueswhitetail.com/forums/topic/11148-sarahs-first-buck/page__hl__sarah

Colorado went to antler point restrictions many years ago for both elk and mule deer. The mule deer antler restrictions did not work so well as a management tool and were dropped. Learn from the past.

Jim, I enjoyed the video and got fired up for my U9 rifle bull hunt. Best to ya on the rest of your seasons. -
Happy Birthday and a good evening to ya.

It was a great day for you and Sarah. I did not see the shotgun though
-
Parker and Darr, I hope all the hunts together will be just as great. I bet that turning 10 was one of the best birthdays for both of you. Congrats on a nice coues.

Good luck on your hunt. While I was photographing the fall aspens on the peaks, I witnessed one bull taken in the inner basin opening Saturday of the first season. Two weekends ago, there appeared to be two large hunting camps near the trailhead to Bismark. There was some shooting above the Nature Conservancy one morning. Hunters i met said they were encountering elk near 9500'. With aspen colors nearly over, you should encounter fewer leaf-lookers. My hunch would be that the two previous hunts and the leaf-lookers will have pushed the elk high, away from the road boundaries. Doug~RR

I have enjoyed the last four weekends on the San Francisco Peaks chasing the fall colors as the aspens in various areas and altitudes change. Yesterday was likely my last day for those ventures on the local volcano, as the aspens are running their final course. I have assembled a collection of the fall images from the Peaks into a gallery. There is a "slide show" button in the upper right of the gallery page for your viewing pleasure, rather than clicking on each image individually. http://www.plateaulightphotography.com/Landscapes/arizonalandscapes/Fall-on-the-Peaks-2012/25931265_5Mjvn2#!i=2150036147&k=qdFjNv8

This event leaves one shaking their head about people and preparedness. Fortunately, you recognized his situation as he walked past.

Thanks TJ and Ilene. Ilene, did you get to hike up to Inner Basin?
-
Must have been a great week with bugling elk, other wildlife and thermal attractions. Was smoke from all the fires a problem?
-
Good job on the bedded bull. I always liked shooting the smoker rounds at the 3D shoots for the difficulty and education about arrow flight.

I know that the hike up there took my breath away Tomorrow morning should be a good day to go as there will be hardly anyone during the week and the leaves will not have fallen yet. Take the trailhead at the southern end of the day use area, and not the old road on the west side of the parking area. The nice aspen grove starts about 30 minutes up the trail. Beautiful hike.

One has to enjoy this time of fall when the aspens are turning and the elk are bugling. This past Saturday I hiked up into the Inner Basin on the San Francisco Peaks to photograph the changing aspens. A coupe of bull elk were bugling before sunrise, but only one remains as one succumbed to an early rifle hunter from Nevada. Congratulations to him. A view of the Inner Basin, the well houses for Flagstaff's water pipeline and morning's red light on Agassiz. The hike back down the trail took a few hours as I spent considerable time in a colorful aspen grove. There were many people on the trail Saturday enjoying the splendor. I think that by next weekend, many leaves in Lockett Meadow and Inner Basin will have fallen, but the slopes near SnowBowl on the west face of the peaks will be getting colorful. I presume that the White mountains in eastern Arizona are getting prime also. Doug

Congrats on the bull and the upcoming baby!

David, must have been exciting to be so close to the herd and such a fine bull.

The week of Labor Day was spent on the North Rim and the Paria Plateau. Four of those days were at an area of convoluted sandstone accessible only by 4wd through deep sand. As usual, I pressed the shutter too many times. In my photo gallery is the "Pick of the Pocket" set of images. This area is possibly my favorite location I have been for photography. Feel free to look through the gallery. http://www.plateauli...67695&k=kG6WTJc
