This post is for the dogs

Rica, my GWP who travels with me on about all hunting and photo trips, is one of those "versatile dogs". Recently atop the Vermilion Cliffs, she demonstrated she was also a Shrimper by catching the tadpole shrimp in the ephemeral pools on the sandstone. After an hour of shrimping, she needs to relax while I take yet another photograph. Here is some information about those horseshoe crab-looking shrimp you may have seen in desert waters. http://en.wikipedia....s_longicaudatus http://www.caver.net/shrimp.html Doug~RR
  5. While on the North Kaibab hunting grouse, this young buck was rather curious and cautiously came within 30 yards of camp while we were eating breakfast.

Looking for a new tripod? These are great!!

Wildlife Photographer Tony Bynum did a review of the TP52. He had good things to say about it- light, packable, anti-twist legs so one does not have hold both sections when twisting to lock/unlock. Casey, the Promaster is about as inexpensive a CF tripod that you can get. Google Gitzo CF tripods for a comparison $500-700.

Cousins receive 48 hours jail for starting Wallow fire

What was the misdemeanor charge of which they were convicted? What do the statutes say are the maximum penalties for this misdemeanor? (The news article is not very comprehensive.)

    .264 Win Mag Powder Choices

Perhaps WW780 maintains a higher pressure over a longer period of time, rather that just a spike of higher pressure. Also the pressure differences are 3% or less. Don't forget about Ramshot Magnum powder.

    Scouting for a December Hunt

A lot may depend if you have hunted the unit before and know the access roads and terrain. If in a new unit, after a lot of map and google earth viewing, maybe a few trips to check what various spots are like, but not necessarily to locate a big buck (still glass at sunrise/sunset though from a better spot located from the daytime scouting). A trip or two during an earlier hunt(s) to see where hunters congregate and may have a greater effect upon buck population. As the season gets close and a good spot chosen, than start looking for a good buck. If the December hunt is in a familiar unit, I would start looking for a buck in late summer before the October hunt and when they are relatively undisturbed, and hope it makes it through the hunt seasons prior to December. Also, how much scouting is done may depend upon how far away from the unit you live, other obligations, and how much pressure you put on yourself to find a big trophy buck.

Work hard to secure a new job that starts after your hunt. Best of luck in your 2 hunts.

    Cleaning optics!!!!

In the field, I blow air first with my mouth (try not to spit ), then use the brush end of a lenspen, and finally one of the Zeiss/B&L lens wipes. I will not use the chamois pad end of the lenspen as any piece of grit captured will turn it into a grinding pad. At home or camp, I start with a bulb air blower, then brush and lens wipe. If somehow mud is on the lens, then it gets flushed with tap water first.

Dave, you might also give Allen Taylor, aka coueshunter, a PM and talk with him directly. Either way, have a great hunt.

Stubborn, but need a nudge...11M archery elk

I do not see a need to pack in a camp in 11M. Since the elk move miles, you may want to be (or able to be) more mobile, especially if the elk get busted out of your chosen area. I would not want to set up a camp in the elk's bedroom, which you may be doing if your get in the middle of an area away from the roads.

    Wyoming Antelope Application Process

Good information. In addition to the link about draw odds, Hunterstrailhead also has a draw odds table for the regular and special permits. http://www.hunterstrailhead.com/ Considering the overall cost of travelling to WY, the extra dollars spent on the special tag for better odds may be warranted, especially if one wants to hunt one of the better units. It is rumored that WY may have a fee increase in 2014. Searching other hunting websites and reading the MRS of Eastmans Hunting Journal is a good way to gather information about units. A few years ago I was able to hunt one of the better antelope units and had a great hunt and took a nice antelope. Drawing the permit took 4 points at the time. I went after the opening wekend to avoid the crowds, and only saw about 4 other groups of hunters in the field. http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=21328&hl=%2Bantelope%2C+%2Bwyoming
