Telephoto Lens Options
Red Rabbit replied to AntlerObsession's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
600 yards will be too far, better to be within 100. You would find the 100-400 more versatile in close range within 50 yards, but the prime should be sharper at 400. You may be able to add a 1.4TC to the lens and still have the camera autofocus. The 100-400 is about $1600 The 400 f/5.6 is about $1340, but has no IS for handhold or monopod work.(not that one would want to handhold a 400 anyway) The 400 f/4 is about $6500 According to Photozone tests, the 400f/5,6 and 100-400 are equal in center sharpness at 400mm http://www.photozone.de/canon_eos_ff/609-canon100400f4556ff?start=1 -
On the way to the Marshall Lake Campout, three bulls in unit 11M provided a quick viewing opportunity. Here are two of the bulls. Same bull, two views. Nikon D90, Nikon 300mm f/4 @ f/5.6, ISO 200, 1.4TC, tripod

If you may be more specific about what you want in a tripod: Al or Carbon? Height? # leg sections? Weight? To be used while sitting or standing?

That lead bull has some stupendous fronts.

He sure grew fast this year Best of luck to ya. -
Congrats on a primo tag. When I had a good tag in WY a few years ago (not unit 61) I found the biologist very helpful. Also be sure to get the BLM maps before calling so you have an idea of where places are before speaking. If you have not already, you may want to use the search engines on MonsterMuleys and HuntTalk forums to see what has been posted in the past. Have a great hunt.

Looking for good binoc system and rangefinder holder
Red Rabbit replied to Coach's topic in Optics and tripods
I am still using the Alaska Guide Creations Bino Pack for my 15s and Leica RF in the front poouch http://www.coueswhitetail.com/bookstore/binocular_pouch.htm I have also seen ads for the S4 Sidewinder retractable cord for rangefinders. It may be a consideration. http://hunting.s4gear.com/products/sidewinder-evo -

6TH ANNUAL CWT.com MARSHALL LAKE GET-TOGETHER
Red Rabbit replied to Lance's topic in CouesWhitetail.com Get-togethers!
TJ, I was slacking and took no event photos; guess the smoked pork kept me sideminded I did post some elk pics in the elk forum from a few bulls seen on the drive there. For me, it was relaxing weekend and mentally enjoyed. -

6TH ANNUAL CWT.com MARSHALL LAKE GET-TOGETHER
Red Rabbit replied to Lance's topic in CouesWhitetail.com Get-togethers!
This morning I put an orange CWT sign at the the turn onto the 128B road before one gets to the area of Marshall Lake (same road as 2, 3 years ago). Lance said he would be out there later today (late afternoon?). There is already someone camping at the spot where we were 2 years ago. -
The sunlight makes the tree appear on fire. cool.

thanks for the additonal info on cell service.

Seems this area has also been closed in previous years to protect Greer. Interesting is that the closure area does not extend all the way west to the Rez boundary, from what I see on the map. http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5374702.pdf

Thanks for the info.

Flagstaff Archers has a range at Fort Tuthill county park. Practice range and walk-through 3D course. See the link below for info. You should be able to get membership apps at Bull Basin Archery and also at Jeff Alfred's Chiropractic office. http://www.flagstaffarchers.com/ There is also to be an archery range at the AZGFD shooting range near Winona.

rifle for a 11 year old girl
Red Rabbit replied to 218buck's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I would get a youth rifle in 7mm-08, have the stock cut to fit her and a Simms recoil pad installed. Shoot the Remington Managed Recoil ammo if you do not reload. You may need to get another stock as she grows. A bolt action .22 or .223 in a rifle fit to her would be good for practice and also. A low power scope will help with target acquisiiton. -
I'd hunt the first week to catch both weekends. Assuming you work M-F, your choosing between 9 days (first Sat to following Sunday) or 5 days (second Sat to last Thursday). There may be fewer hunters in the woods after the second Sunday, but the elk may be more call shy or tend to come to water after dark.

Another false start and you will be scratched from the race

Someone on MM posted that the news reported that UT shooters were using tracer ammo. iirc, the fire caused by shooters near Prescott (Paulden?) a few years ago was due to tracer ammo.

6TH ANNUAL CWT.com MARSHALL LAKE GET-TOGETHER
Red Rabbit replied to Lance's topic in CouesWhitetail.com Get-togethers!
Lance will likely be set up on the 128B road, about 0.2 miles off the main road. The 128B is before one gets to the opening of Marshall Lake. Marshall is likely not a lake or pond right now, as it was very low when I was there a few months ago. Any boating or fishing willl have to be at Upper Lake Mary or Ashurst. Maybe Lance will post when he will be set up out there and what his vehicle will look like. I have not heard any rumors of a forest closure for the CNF. -
UA is up 6-0 in top of 2nd over FSU. Hope they get to the finals and do well.

Interesting results, specially re the Docters. Missing in the evaluation would be the Leica Duovids, Zeiss Conquest 15x45 and the Minox 15x58 & 15x56, and Vortex Viper 15x50. Would liked to have read more about chromatic aberration, contrast, edge sharpness, and field curvature. Maybe show a data table for how fine on the resolution chart each could define, and interpupillary distance.
