Bow Hunting Unit 10: any feedback
Red Rabbit replied to Airbusdriver's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Bill Williams Mountain is in unit 8. Archery deer is not a draw in unit 8 or 10. So what hunt number did you draw? -
I would hunt the edge of the canyons on the east, south and southwest sides of the unit. Lots of country to scout. 'Tis hard to see the coues in the brush on the canyon sides.

Back in April, there were 240 people with the max of 22 BP for sheep http://www.azgfd.gov/eservices/documents/IndividualBonusPointsTotalsbySpecies.pdf Last year, there were 8205 applicants for the 97 permits. So if we can wait about 85 years, we can all get drawn. Being drawn for bighorn will be a bonus, not an expectancy or certainty, imo. I have 19 BP for sheep before the draw, as I did not apply the first few years after moving back to AZ.

"The Draw" and a new topic....
Red Rabbit replied to Ace High Benny's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I have only been checked 4 times in the last 20 years. If there is only one WM per unit, easy to see why the chances of being checked are slim. I would like G&F to be able to have more WMs in the field. All of my experiences with the WMs have been positive. -
Drawing Results Contest "OVER"

The earliest post I saw that the results were posted was at 9:22AM on Monster Muleys (9:27 here on CWT). Dunno when AZGFD actually toggled the switch. So Bowhunt's guess of 9:28 was pretty close. For the next draw, we should call him for his crystal ball report . Congrats on your guess Bowhuntaz. Hope you get to dull a few blades on the Havalon this fall. -
That must be your new lucky sheep hat. Have a great hunt!
-
Neither sheep nor deer tag, as expected.
-
11:01 Only 2 1/2 hours left to wait, right?

With the monsoon showers, you may wish to look for the greenup areas that will attract the cows and calves, and hence the bulls as the rut begins. Those bulls may move 0-25 miles for their harem. If you knew where that bull was last fall during the rut, I'd go there first.

Hope your steak is thick, juicy, and grilled to your liking.

Oops, I did not notice that you were posting in the NM forum. As Rosanna Rosanna Danna said on SNL, "Never mind."
-
If I recall correctly, the leftover list was published very close to when the draw results were out. Based on prior year's date, the leftover apps may start being accepted Aug 8 (just a guess).

I hear the deer in 36B have already been slow roasted on an open pit fire. You just need to be drawn for the BBQ tickets

In case some may not have seen these, Chris and Aaron have posted some great revealing photos of the burn, including aerials, on AZSJ. http://www.azsj.org/forums/showthread.php?t=20233&page=1&pp=10

Here is my WAG July 19, 2:48 PM MST -
Just a few sprinkles so far this morning here in Kachina. Will have to see what the day brings later on. I was thinking yesterday while at JD Dam that a nice runoff-causing rain would be nice to get. Those on the east side of the SF Peaks may need some help from potential flooding.

Your so lucky. Those like you receiving these early notifications were drawn for sheep on the Navajo Reservation. Baaahhhhhh.

Rica and I went to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon over the Fourth of July weekend. We saw some mule deer, a bobcat and plenty of scenic views along the roadways. We avoided the potential crowd at the lodge and Bright Angel Point, so instead spent a couple of sunsets and sunrises at Cape Royal and Point Imperial. Saturday evening treated us to nice sunset light on Wotan's Throne at Cape Royal. Both sunrises were spent at Point Imperial and a view of Mount Hayden. Sunday morning had normal yellow light at sunrise. Sunrise on Monday was very red as there were light clouds, dust and haze to the east to cast a spell upon the morning light. Hazy pre-sunrise view towards Navajo Mountain. A crimson Mount Hayden There are more images from the weekend posted in my photo gallery, if you wish to look. http://dougkoepsel.smugmug.com/Landscapes/Doug-Koepsel-Photography/11289820_iMwnH#1369681296_MNH723k Doug~RR

Ahh, the wall of dust, just like the summer storms were decades ago before the ag land was paved over. The pool care companies gotta love the blowing dust for business. I remember as a kid trying to rig a sail to my bicycle.

Looks like a fun trip. Bulls look well fed and have nice racks so far. Have you been to Mt Evans to see the Mountain Goats?

On Friday, I picked up the shoulder mount of my 2010 Wyoming antelope. Tim Rajsich of TR Taxidermy here in Flagstaff did the work. The hair of the Wyoming antelope is quite a bit fuller than that of Arizona antelope, which in turn makes for a much fuller looking mount especially through the neck. A photo of the mount taken on an outside wall. (yep, ran out of space inside the house and have to hang the new stuff outside ) Field photo from the hunt Link to the original hunt story http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=21328 Doug~RR

What are your plans for the July 4th weekend? Rica said she wants to go to the North Rim and look for buffalo and grouse, and peer down into a big ditch. I might bring a camera along.
