With dog as my co-pilot, Rica and I headed towards Las Vegas to the Valley of Fire State Park to enjoy the warm weather and vibrant sandstone. There were many more places to hike, explore and photograph than the two days would permit. The road to White Domes winds its way though the valley. Fire Wave was made famous by some german photographers. Nice banded rock at the head of a slot canyon. Evening showers above Gibraltar Rock. Small alcove with eroded features. Krazy Kolors at a place called Crazy Hill. There are plenty more images from Valley of Fire in my photo gallery if you care to visit. Doug~RR

DB's plan is what I was going to suggest. You may want to sit a wallow mid-day (instead of in camp) in case the bull sneaks off from the harem to get the muddy stink. Elk are pretty spread in the unit, so no real key areas. RR

Thanks for the looks and comments. Brent, after a winter of snow, the desert is nice to visit. But after 20 years on Flagstaff, I am finding 85* rather warm (even though I grew up in Phoenix). Looking forward to seeing more Yellowstone/Madison fishing photos. Doug~RR

For all the lucky AZ antelope tag holders
Red Rabbit replied to andrewandy1's topic in Antelope Hunting
Congrats on a nice buck. Looks like he carries his horn mass well. -
No plug required for turkey, but can't see one needing more than 3 anyway.

7mm rem mag stock ammo?
Red Rabbit replied to arizonaelitefreak's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Fusion ammo is relatively inexpensive and has been accurate for me as factory ammo. Would be a good choice for deer. http://www.fusionammo.com/products/rifle.aspx -
Sounds like a good couple of mornings spent together.

Leica Douvid 10+15. Top Quality optics and they save weight and space over packing two separate pair.

Did the gunsmith recrown the barrel also? Results look pretty good now. -
The weekend plans were set after a friend mentioned the first balloon festival at Monument Valley. What a graeat setting for colorful balloons against the sandstone walls. I headed north Thursday afternoon to catch the Mitten Shadow and then the hot air balloons for the rest of the weekend. A few balloons launched Friday morning. Saturday morning brought great conditions for the balloonists with clear skies, very light breezes and plenty of steerage in the layers. However, the winds kicked in with gusto Saturday afternoon and never relented, so the Saturday night glow and Sunday morning launch never materialized. I have posted several more images here on my website: http://dougkoepsel.smugmug.com/Landscapes/Monument-Valley/11677636_tKqWc#1239618613_LR7sT Mitten Shadow Dawn with a Crescent Moon Inflating Floating Above Rain Bird Mesa Thanks for looking. I recall Eli Grimmett posting recently that they have come out with "Size is Everything 2"

You are certainly welcome to send some of that white stuff down AZ way, although the liquid form requires no shoveling

The one hunt that springs to my mind quickly, hence very memorable, is a backpack archery elk hunt into a wilderness area in southwest Colorado. This hunt occurred in the mid 1980s with a long-time friend. Beautiful country with a mix of warm sun, a snow storm, and bugling bulls. This bull came into my bugling calls (what luck, huh?), and my friend Russ arrowed it at 27 yards. Some local friends had a horse which made packing out the meat easy, although Russ hoofed out the head (we did not know how to cape at that time). I had hunted in that wilderness a handful of times alone or with Russ until Colorado DOW made the unit a draw. Doug~RR

HBD Keven, Hope you enjoy the special day with the family. Doug

I am not seeeing this as an attempt to call someone out, but rather as a teachable moment. What is right? and what is wrong? One should learn from others' mistakes, so here is a mistake we can learn from. Or this OP is being part of the hunter village trying to raise the child.

Terry, Looks like there are 138 people with 20-22 BP for antelope along with your dad. Good luck to him. http://www.azgfd.gov/eservices/documents/IndividualBonusPointsTotalsbySpecies_100715.pdf
