Red Rabbit replied to Browning'sCustomMeat's topic in The Campfire
Yep, we should have been reading tea leaves instead of the paper/horriblescopes. I'm crushed too that I am no longer a Capricorn. -
Christian, Sounds like a fun hunt was had and enjoyed with friends. Got you sleeping bag ready to camp out in line this Friday to get another SC tag?

270 wsm and H4350 question
Red Rabbit replied to Hunt7112's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
The Hodgdon site lists H4350 with the 130 Hornady SP. Start at the min and work up with a chronograph using the 130 BT. -
Some larger bulls may drop at the end of Feb, but I figure the peak may be the first part of April for most bulls. If there is not a lot of snow, they may be scattered and back up above the rim/summer range by the time they drop. There was a bull hit on I-17 north of Munds Park a few days ago. If there is a lot of snow, don't chase them around, scatter them, and stress them on the winter range. Many like to walk fencelines as elk use them as walkways and may lose an antler when they jump over. Some like to look in the open feeding areas where they are at night and some like to look in the thick bedding areas that they may lose on the trees. Basically, they are where they are. Keep the atvs on the roads.

No, for only one unit, you only need to put the hunt number in for first choice. Putting the same first choice hunt number in first and second choice on the app would be used if you have a second hunt you want to apply for, but not want to draw it in the 20% pass and eliminate the first choice from being looked at in the 1-2 pass.
-
By entering the same number first and second choice, they prevent from being drawn a lesser hunt in the 20% pass if they have enough BP, but not enough BP to draw the first choice in the 20% pass. The first choice is then considered in teh regular 1-2 pass for the remaining 80% of the tags. In other words, they are insuring they have a chance to draw their first choice in the draw and not drawing a different second choice in the prior 20% bonus pass.
-
"Twenty percent of the total authorized hunt permit-tags (all hunt numbers combined) for both bighorn sheep and buffalo may be issued. " TJ, 20% of the total sheep tags are issued in the bonus pass, but not by individual units since some units have less than 5 permits. So 20% of the permits may have been drawn, but did not include anyone wanting 24BW.

Congresswoman Giffords shot
Red Rabbit replied to Kilimanjaro's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Just saw that. One news service says "fatally shot", another reports she is in surgery. Shocking and disheartening news. -
With the rifle bull elk hunts next week and late cow hunts afterwards, be cautious of how you heat your tent or camper in the colder weather. Don't leave a propane heater, catalytic heater, charcoal stove burning all night, you may not wake up. Be wary of where vehicle exhaust is going. Use both CO and CO2 sensors- they are inexpensive. I would not trust the sensor on a Mr Buddy. http://www.carbon-monoxide-poisoning.com/symptoms.html Just read a tale on another hunting website, so decided to pass the warning.

I was told that there were not going to be any more sunsets, so I went to the Big Ditch to usher in the last one. Thursday's storm dropped some white stuff into the canyon, but the winds kept the rim scoured of most of the snow. It was a bit nipper at the canyon; morning was -24 and it rose to a balmy +16. The last of the light to fall on Isis Temple for the year. Dusk looking east from Yavapi Point towards Desert View No more sunsets...at least from 2010. Happy New Year! Doug~RR

I noticed this old log home on Garland Prairie this past summer and thought it would be nice to shoot after a snow at sunset. I went there tonight. As dusk progressed, the sky turned peach before the blue of the earth shadow appeared. No antelope were seen though. Last rays of sun Just Peachy Earth Shadow. Not too much magenta though. Doug~RR

Hopefully this rain will let the dogs smell some birds. If anyone goes for Mearns this weekend, please post your findings. Thanks. Rica

Mearns after the Rain?

No recent reports? -
Likely that in the 20% bonus pass, the 20% of the permits for his first choice had been issued to those with more BP, but he had enough BP to draw his 2nd choice in the 20% pass. By "filled", the reference was likely that all of the 20% bonus pass permits were issued, and not the regular 1-2 pass. This situation has happened before a few years ago, the hunter petitioned the commission for the first choice permit as there were leftovers for that deer hunt. He was issued a first choice permit. The department said they were going manually to look for those that drew 2nd choice but there were 1st choice leftovers. Evidently the computer draw program has not beem modified. One way to prevent this if it is a problem for a person is to put the same hunt choice down for 1st and 2nd, and then others for 3, 4, 5.

Thanks. With a couple of new windows and a little chinking, the place could be livable.

.264 Winchester Mag loads?
Red Rabbit replied to 40-year-AZ-hunter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I had a 264 for a while. Try the slower powders like H1000, Retumbo, Ramshot Magnum. 130 grain Swift Scirocco II , Berger or Accubond would be bullets I would try. Don't know what twist you have. John Barsness had an article in the Feb 2005 Handloader magazine about reloading the 264 with modern powders. -
