Congrats and welcome to the forum.

Congrats on your first Coues, but sorry about not being able to eat all that great venison.

The Sonoita Inn is hunter friendly and the steak house next door is good. After reading this report on the Stage Stop, its new management and conditions, I wouldn't consider it, http://www.azsj.org/forums/showpost.php?p=...amp;postcount=2

For breakfast, one can pre-cook scrambled eggs, pototoes , cheese, green cilies and what not. Freeze in a freezer ziplock and then just heat in boiling water in the morning. Use the water for coffee, tea or hot chocolate. (sorry, I do not have a travel trailer, generator and microwave) Dinner- often heat Stouffers lasagna or such in a covered pan of slow boiling water for 30 minutes while enjoying a beverage and horsie-dervies. Try to get some complex carbs, fat and protein in the meals. Cook/grill easy stuff to minimize dish washing and maximize hunting and sack time. A friend would just put some cold water in a pack of instant oatmeal and slog it down. yuk.

2011 CALENDAR In only a few weeks, we will need to grace our walls with a new calendar for 2011. Please consider this calendar with cover and pages that feature full color photographs from Arizona and a couple from Utah and Colorado. This colorful calendar for the upcoming year is printed on heavy 100# white gloss stock and is white coil bound. The calendar opens to 11” x 17” and has a tiny upper hole to hang from a brad. This mosaic collage shows the cover and monthly images. All photographs were taken by Doug Koepsel, aka Red Rabbit. The calendar is for sale through Coueswhitetail.com bookstore, and part of the proceeds will benefit this website. http://www.coueswhitetail.com/bookstore/2011_calendar.htm Thank you for your support. I placed an order for 25 more calendars and should be receiving them next week. If anyone is interested in placing an order, here is the link to Amanda's Bookstore. http://www.coueswhitetail.com/bookstore/2011_calendar.htm Doug~RR

http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/coconino/news/2010...tmas-tree.shtml •Mogollon Rim Ranger District has 250 permits for fir trees. Cutting area is along the Mogollon Rim at the south end of Dane and McClintock Ridges. Permits can be purchased at the Mogollon Rim Ranger Station on Highway 87, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. 928-477-2255. The Coconino NF website is hardly up to date, so better call and see if any permits remain.

At that range, I would be using turrets as opposed to hashmarks on a reticle. You will also likely need to be on max magnification all the time for the BDC to be accurate, so in essence the BDC is giving you a fixed 20x scope. In heavy mirage, thicker cover, or shorter ranges, you may wish to dial down the magnification. I t looks like the Vortex BDC only has a few dots for every hundred yards.

Nick, Congrats on a nice looking ram. His hair color sure does match the rock color well. In what shape did you find the sheep population in your unit? Doug~RR

cracked base on .270 cartridge
Red Rabbit replied to Pine Donkey's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
In addition to the excessive resizing, the problem could also be due to excessive headspace in the chamber as you mentioned it was a new rebarrel. Chamber should be checked with a no-go gauge. -
Nice antelope.

As an aside, I see that ASU lost to Baylor in hoops. Sic' em Bears!

Bridger- Congrats on a great bull. Hope to read a detailed story. Lark- are you flashing gang signs or doing your Richard Nixon imitation? Doug~RR

Allen, Based on the outer limits of what you have said, I think that you would need to have a cartridge capable of elk at 700 yards, meaning does it have the retained velocity for bullet expansion (1800-2000 fps) and enough energy (possibly using the fabled benchmark of 2000 FPE). You can compare some numbers of various cartridges out to 500 yards on the Federal site http://www.federalpremium.com/products/rifle.aspx You are likely looking at the ilk of a 338 RUM (or Lapua, Edge) to best get the needed V&E, based on paper ballistics. But then you would also be looking at a heavier rifle and a muzzle brake. Looks like a 300RUM would give you the vel with a good 30cal bullet, but with a little less than 2000FPE @700yds. Then you can spend almost an eternity looking through LRH http://www.longrangehunting.com/ Are you handloading or going to use factory ammo?

Hector and Allen, Sincere congrats on a couple of nice "carp". Better get back to hunting Coues before Duwane's camps on the Kaibab spoil ya. How long is that left G-2? Doug~RR

I can't see much ballistic difference between a 7 Rem Mag and the 7 WBY Mag. How does your WBY shoot? The 280 is not far behind. Brake or no ear-break?

Coatimundi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coati Season is Sept 1- Mar 31, limit is one per calendar year. -
Allen, Congrats on overcoming seemingly lousy conditions with a good buck. Must have been a great camp to share. So why are you looking for a 7mm? Doug~RR

Mearns Opener - any reports?
Red Rabbit replied to scoutm's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I'm hoping the lack of success was largely due to the dry conditions and inability of the dogs to scent. Will need to hunt again after a rain or snow and some moisture cometh. -
Mearns Opener - any reports?

Was very dry out there. Only turned one covey in two days . Heard very few other shots in the distance. -
If one does not want to fight the crowds on Black Friday, one could always shop online in Amanda's store
