Let your daughter video your hunt.... with the amazing Barbie Video Girl. Also helps relieve her boredom on the mountain with kids' shorter attention spans. A little cheaper than a GL2 or DSLR with video, but it might be hard to explain to your hunting buddies why you have a Barbie Doll on your pack http://vimeo.com/13992345

Good Luck to all of you who have general rifle bull tags starting this Thanksgiving Friday . Looks like long term weather will be hospitable. Don't forget to take some nice photos and write up your hunt for the elk contest.

Out of these units, which would you choose for an archery bull elk hunt?
Red Rabbit replied to 308Nut's topic in Elk Hunting
M, I am assuming that you have about 9 BP as a NR and know it'll be years before you catch up to the pack for a unit 9 tag. Good luck. Doug~RR -
There are informational meetings starting tonight in Tucson. http://azgfd.net/artman/publish/NewsMedia/...endations.shtml The meetings to supply input before the recommendations were finalized wers about a month ago, but you should talk to the WM and regional managers before then even. Right now, your best venue for input would be a polite, researched-backed input letter to each commissioner and to also speak at the upcoming commission meeting. Changes are rare at this point from what I have observed, but they do sometimes happen if there is a valid argument against the proposals.

Bought a Rock Chucker kit
Red Rabbit replied to DesertBull's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
DB, I partial full-length size such that the die is down enough that it just touches the shoulder but not try to set it back. Check with a smoked shoulder and neck. Doug~RR -

I find the Lee Powder Measure scoops very handy to dump powder into the pan and trickle in the last bit. http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=943305 The RCBS Chargemaster electronic powder scale/dispaensor is very convenient, but not necessary. Some anti-static wipes for the plastic funnel so the powder does not stick. You can get a lot of load data off the bullet and powder manufactures' websites, but I like the Nosler manuals. I use the the Hornady Comparator and OAL guage for bullet seating depth. http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=231904 http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=570611 For dies, my choice is the Forster Ultra die set with the Ultra micrometer bullet seating die (if not just for the seating die in the set) -

***Trade Pending***Leupold VX-III 8.5-25x50mm W/ Varmint reticle
Red Rabbit replied to stalkincoues's topic in Classified Ads
Stalkincoues, your photos indicate that the scope is a VX-III, not a VX-3 as the post title and links indicate. The VX-3 has an improved erector system for better tracking, and tweeks in coatings/lenses to make the image a little brighter with slight improvement in resolution. -
Casey, just push that button at the top of the trigger shoe to the other side

I'm glad that this thread has morphed into one of ethics and legality. A friend from AK read this forum a few years ago and commented to me that "you guys in Arizona sure use a lot of radios, don't you?" Of course, in AK radio use for hunting is illegal. I would not agree with the idea that if it legal, then it is ethical. I think ethics should be at a higher standard than legality. The fact that use of radios, cell phones, trail cameras, bait are illegal during the hunt in some states speaks about what some consider ethical and go against the ideals of fair chase. When does it come time that our use of technology does not give the game a "fair" chance? When does a hunter's need to succeed overcome a sense of ethics and fair chase? I think we are seeing evidence of it mentioned here about the desert deer. The same applies to coues and elk hunting. We individually have to decide what is ethical and right, but I think we as hunters all have the responsibility to offer guidance/opinion/beliefs to other hunters what we feel is right/ethical. Just as a parent should instill ethics and morality this in his/her child, it is also society's responsibility (ie it takes a village to raise a child).

Pretty pictures

We are likely on a mountain top at sunrise and sunset this hunting season, so we should be seeing the majestic colors of His heavens. From a recent elk hunt near Williams AZ -
#6 is the most interesting to me. Not the best lighting/exposure/color though. That spike will likely be the "Dominantor" buck considering his posturing he is exhibiting now as only a spike.

If any CWT members were successful in the early archery season and wish to enter the coues buck contest, please email me your photo, gross score and link to story. I have only received one archery entry http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/in...showtopic=20199 Doug~RR

Very few entries in the coues buck contest from archers. Remember to email me your field photo, story link and gross score to enter the contest. There are many great prizes to be awarded this year! http://www.coueswhitetail.com/Coues_Buck_C...est_2010-11.htm Doug~RR dkoepsel@aol.com

Best Offroad/ Hyway tires for Coues Country
Red Rabbit replied to Santana Outdoors's topic in Other Hunting Gear
I put on some Goodyear Wrangler DuraTacs, load range E. I see them as a cross between a mud and AT tire. http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/tires/goo...01&pc=31922 Before these, I had some Geolanders AT, but they changed the tread pattern to more of a highway type. I have also had the BigO XT. They did well for Flagstaff rock, dirt and snow roads, but were a little noisy on pavement. -
The best game salami I have had was made with lion. Like all game meat, do not overcook when grilling some great lion steaks. Makes good fajitas or stir fry also. Europen the skull. A rug or just a tanned pelt to drape is nice.

Unless you have enough points to get yourself into the bonus pass, then draw odds for Goulds is abysmal- like getting lucky for a late Kaibab tag. There are 20-30 people applying for each Goulds tag. http://www.azgfd.gov/eservices/documents/2...yHuntNumber.pdf

I like the idea of shooting the lower barrel first as it would tend to produce less barrel jump before the second shot as it is more in line with the butt's heel. Wish I had a lighter 28 ga for quail when carrying it around all day. Gambels- improved and modified Mearns- skeet and skeet, since they tend to flush close

School me on socks, liners, insoles, wax, etc..
Red Rabbit replied to AZ RANGER's topic in Other Hunting Gear
The thin liner socks add a layer of slippage that can help prevent blisters and may be of a material that helps wick moisture. Merino wool socks like the Smartwool brand wick better than cotton and are warmer when wet (might be nice when you sit at your morning glassing spot). I think wool provides more cushion than cotton. Wool does not tend to stink as bad after wearing and sweating like cotton or polypropylene do. In the warm deserts, you may like a synthetic sock like some Thorlos as it will wick better and be a little cooler than wool. For the desert, I would not get an insulated boot. -
Amanda, the hockey center, ripped off a blistering slapshot and put it between the pipes. Nice 106" She is on a backpack hunt with Scott Adams. He has seen a nice buck, so they are trying for him here in the third period. Now if Scott can just keep Amanda out of the penalty box for excessive celebration

Nice Larry. No back-to-back for me though.
