Arizona Elk Society Water For Wildlife Catchment Repair Squad.
-
Just for a point of interest. The Arizona Elk Society with funding from AZGFD, the auction tag, AES Banquet and recent raffles is working right now in Units 22 & 23 restoring 72 of the 150 old non working Forest Service catchments. last year we fixed 45 of them in Units 7 and 9. The AES has a worker that hauled over 200,000 gallons of water last year and 50,000 gallons this year in many different northern AZ Units. We also hired a contractor to clean silt out of 16 dirt tanks in Unit 7 last year. In most cases elk and wildlife will move from tank to tank. The benefit of more widlely distributed water catchments is that the wildlife will better utilize the forage. Elk, wildlife and cattle camping out in one area wipe out the forage pretty quick. These waters should greatly benefit turkeys too. When these waters were working 10-15 years ago turkey area grew. Since the winter kill of 2010, and the fact that the water sources didn't work anymore, the turkeys never came back in some areas. With these waters we hope to see better turkey numbers in the future in areas where they were killed. Check out the AES Facebook and our AZ Elk Water Projects Facebook page too. Lots of good things going on out there. As always we are looking for Volunteers to help out. GET INVOLVED!!!

Raffles at Arizona Elk Society - Canyon Coolers Raffles NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
rthrbhntng replied to n2horns's topic in The Campfire
Just a query, would you like to see more Canyon and Yeti Coolers or maybe 3 of the new Go Pro 4s??? Thanks -
Unit 9 has very little, way less than most units, natural water. One of the most common mistakes I see and hear from hunters is that there are many G&F catchments that are not on the maps. G&F has very few catchments in the woods comparied to the US Forest service. There are many hundreds of catchments that are US Forest Service. Many years ago the USFS was interested in wildlife, now they are interested in mainly T&E wildlife. Hundreds of the USFS catchments have not worked in many years. They stopped maintaining them years ago. That is one of the main reasons that the Arizona Elk Society started their Water For Wildlife Program. Steve

There are a few toy haulers that can be hauled with a half ton. Have a friend take the OHV up and rent a trailer. Can't go wrong staying in a trailer. Warm, shower, get out of elements in case of a storm. That said I have a 10 x 14 Kodiak. Buddy heater, Butler Sleeping bag, Shower enclosure with a shower made out of a 2 gallon bug sprayer with a long hose and shower head. Put in a little warm water if cold outside or just fill and leave in the sun to warm. 10 x 10 popup canopy with sides to cook. Very cozy setup and the Kodiak is a killer tent. Steve

Do you agree with G&F forcing kids to take Hunter Safety???
rthrbhntng replied to Big Browns's topic in Youth Hunters
After running numerous youth hunting camps and mentoring many young hunters I would say that YES keep the requirements in place. -

Matty, Other than wind, rain, snow and cold it was a great Junior Turkey camp in Unit 23. We only harvested 7 birds but they were talking and seemed to be henned up. If I was hunting 23 I would spend my time in the middle of the Unit. The north lower country towards Payson was good but there seems to be lots of birds down near Young. That is the way it has been for a few years ever since the late snow storm that killed the birds in the high country.

Beat the heat in one of the most beautiful areas of the state. The Arizona Elk Society Buck Spring Volunteer Wildlife Habitat Work Project is set for May 16-17. This is one of the largest, best attended projects on or calendar. The camp will be the same as last year, Dane Springs, roughly 10 miles east of Clints Well and 11 miles south of HWY 87 on FR95. Come out and help Restore Riparian Meadows and Creeks, remove pine trees from riparian meadows to increase watershed, remove old barbed wire fences, maintain enclosures for threatened willows, aspen and maple trees and much more. We will have 2 Boy Scouts working on their Eagle scout Projects building log fences for protection of wildlife meadows. As always all meals from Fri dinner to Sun lunch will be provided. We will have our famous New York Strip Steak dinner on Sat. Please visit the www.arizonaelksociety.org for more information and to RSVP, we need to get a count for the food.

Straight Arrow Outfitters, Steve Hanson. Steve hunts with us every year here in AZ for Elk. Has great Trophy potential. If you are going to the Arizona Elk Society Banquet, which is sold out, he donated a hunt. Randy and Matt Liljenquist hunted with him a few years ago and had a great hunt. www.huntstraightarrow.com

This company makes super light bags and quilts. They are great quality. We will have the 20 degree one at the Arizona Elk Society Banquet in the silent auction. http://www.enlightenedequipment.com/

Tommy, you might check Henry direct. They can engrave them. Might be cheaper that way.

It is my understanding that the long range off of Carefree Hwy has been open for many years. The general public does not have access to the range. You must belong to or attend a group shoot at that range. I think one of the groups that has access is Desert Sharpshooters Rifle Club. Bill Poole is the main contact.

Arizona Game and Fish issues notice of intent to sue federal officials over Mexican wolf recovery plan development PHOENIX – The Arizona Game and Fish Department today served a Notice of Intent with the secretary of the Department of Interior and director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service). The action was taken in an effort to support development of an updated recovery plan for Mexican wolves that utilizes the best available science as legally required by the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Game and Fish has requested an updated recovery plan from the Service on multiple occasions over the past several years because the current recovery plan for Mexican wolves developed in 1982 is so outdated that it no longer provides an adequate framework to guide the recovery effort. That plan also fails to identify the recovery criteria required by the ESA including downlisting and delisting criteria. “This Notice of Intent is an effort to ensure that the Fish and Wildlife Service adheres to its legal obligation to develop a thorough science-based plan that will lead to a successful recovery outcome that recognizes Mexico as pivotal to achieving recovery of the Mexican wolf given that 90 percent of its historical range is there,” said Arizona Game and Fish Department Director Larry Voyles. Bi-national recovery plans for endangered species have been successfully established with Mexico for other species including Sonoran pronghorn, Kemp’s ridley sea turtles and, most recently, thick-billed parrots. The department asserts that to succeed, Mexican wolf recovery must include an integrated, bi-national approach that incorporates the recovery work already underway in Mexico. “I fully support today’s action and I look forward to working with the department to develop a legal and sound plan for the recovery of the Mexican wolf,” said Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich. The Service is currently in litigation with several parties that are pushing for reestablishment of Mexican wolves in areas that are not part of the subspecies’ historical range and requesting a resolution in an unreasonable timeframe. These groups are basing their litigation on a draft report developed by a Mexican Wolf Recovery Science and Planning Subgroup. The department completed extensive analysis of the subgroup’s recommendations and found the science used as a basis for the recommendations to be significantly flawed. This misguided approach could jeopardize genetic integrity of the subspecies if the Mexican wolf is permitted to reestablish in close proximity to Northern gray wolves. Secretary Sally Jewell of the Department of Interior has 60 days to respond to the Notice of Intent. If the secretary fails to respond, the department will pursue civil action. A Notice of Intent is a required precursor to pursuing civil action. Arizona Game and Fish’s involvement in Mexican wolf conservation began in the mid-1980s. Since that time, the department has spent more than $7 million on wolf recovery in the state and has been the predominant on-the-ground presence working to manage Mexican wolves. For more information on Mexican wolves, visit www.azgfd.gov/wolf.

If you have the midlands or Motorola regular handhelds get the ear bud/mic (that way you look like the secret service) it will mute everything and there won't be any external noise. This way you are also not fumbling with the radio at the wrong time and you won't inadvertently press the button that makes noise. Also available on Ebay. Make sure the pin configuration fits your particular radio.
