Auction Elk Hunt, Units 3C, 1 and 23 North Interview with Jed Larson
GreyGhost85 replied to Jay Scott's topic in Elk Hunting
These podcasts are great. they have definitely pulled me away from listening to the radio. could have done without the one with the Gray Light guy though. little too arrogant for my taste -
You don't get why people won't share what unit? Lol. I hate it when people share units

Me must be 60" inside. Pic must be deceiving

It must get old being such a holier than though, by the book lunatic. You would write yoursef a ticket for speeding if it was possible. No matter how much you preach the law around on here, i doubt you'll be recruited off this forum to become a G&F officer or some other type of LEO. Don't you have some "cops" re-runs to watch and touch yourself to?

30+ Cameras...holy crap...you must spend a lot of time going out and swapping SD cards and batteries. How many do you have out in the field right now? I know who to go to for tips on cameras Thanks!I usually only run around 5-7 at any time. It would be a full time job running any more than that! I usually only get about 2-3 years out of cameras before they crap out or get eaten by a bear. Never had one stolen though.

Yeah, that's where it was at. I hunted it probably 5-6 years ago and it was rifle, any elk. I think it was the first year G&F offered an OTC elk hunt and the area was pretty busy. Could have killed a couple cows, but opted against it

Best rifle cartridge for open terrain - Unit 21 Whitetail hunt

Just couldn't respond without getting ethics involved eh? Big fast bullets cause lots of shock and trauma. I've killed around 10 coues, most with a plain old .270, shot a couple with a .264. Wasn't trying to get in an argument here, just making a point. .243 does a fine job of killing any deer out there, but I have seen a couple that were hit by a .243 that got away, whereas a larger, faster projectile would have put that animal down. -
I don't hear a whole lot of whining out of everyone? I hear one person indirectly accusing trail cam users of deforestation by trimming a branch or putting a screw in a tree. LOL... Every Year there is a slew of whining over taken cams ( wont call them stolen since you can not steal abandoned property ) and the fact remains the laws I speak of exist and I do not make them... You know even the worst criminals try to justify their actions in the same way a guy driving lag bolts into a live tree does .. Sorry I do not see much difference... no matter how petty of an act you may think it is. The talk about cameras disappearing is getting redundant after so many pathetic posts year after year... I honestly do not care, and hate to break it to you ... Like I said Karma comes and goes both ways .. keep justifying however you want , but IMO you should keep your rants, whining and complaining to yourself. You should do everyone a favor and keep to yourself. Any time a post "peaks your interest" you pull out the rule book. We have enough police in this world, the internet in not in need of another one. All that flows out of your mouth is negativity and accusations.

I hunted one of the 4b otc hunts a few years back. Very few elk, but still had fun. Could have killed a couple cows. Tracking elk in that area is pretty easy, as the ground is very soft and sandy

Best rifle cartridge for open terrain - Unit 21 Whitetail hunt
GreyGhost85 replied to Desert Rat's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Not sure I agree with this statement. Poor shot placement is poor shot placement regardless of the caliber used. There is more that comes into play than just cartridge size when a poor shot is made. Bullet construction and performance has just as much to do with it than anything. The .300WSM may deliver more energy at point of impact but depending on shot location and the bullet used it may deliver most of that energy into the dirt behind the animal rather than into it. Take for example gut shooting a deer with a 300wm at 400 yards with a solid bullet that pokes straight through and making that same shot with a .243 using a bullet like the Berger vld that fragments and dumps energy and shrapnel into the guts and surrounding organs and tissue. Chances are the deer will die either way but how quickly and humanely may very considerably. Im not saying one bullet or cartridge is better than the other I am just simply saying there is more to consider than .065" of bullet diameter. Gut shoot a deer with a .243 and then do the same with a .338 lapua and tell me it doesn't make a difference. Without getting "ethics" involved. Everyone has made a poor shot at one time or another in their life. A big gun might waste some meat, but it's a lot less wasted meat than if the animal gets away -

If it's no fun to shoot because of recoil, why not just have a muzzlebreak installed. I am a firm believer in using one rifle for all big game hunting. It is fun to have options, but i like having a good "go to" for all big game. .243's are fine, but a not so good hit on an animal with a 300wsm as compared to a .243, will make it a more fatal shot. -
Lets hear what everyone wants to know. Have you shot any animals with it, and what was the aftermath? Haha

It's amazing that some people think putting a screw in a tree or trimming a couple branches is worse than theft. i do not agree with these people screwing their cameras into trees, don't get me wrong, but trimming a branch or two? doesn't hurt anything. i know G&F states that it is illegal but it is such a petty thing that they won't enforce it. people know the risks involved with setting out cameras on these very well known and easily accessible water holes, close to town. it's like playing russian roulette. it does suck for the people that have them stolen, but a little creativity and common sense will tell you where and where not to place cameras. instead of placing them on a water hole, how about placing them on a trail leading in or out of the hole? those big, gaudy lock boxes stand out like a sore thumb. might as well have a neon sign with an arrow pointing to them

What's wrong with the scope that's on it already? Save the money you would spend on a new scope and put it towards binos or scouting trips

These are the older style. They are HD, i think all kaibabs are, but they do have the old style diopter adjustment
-
Here is what gets me...they say HD all over the box and the binos themselves, but they are about 5 years old. Before the new "HD" models came out. I don't know the difference though
-
It's the same adapter jim white used to sell, but vortex included it with their kaibabs for a little while and it did not have a specific name. It is the exact same thing as the jim white, because i own a couple of them
