My unit 31 Veterans Day buck

Last year a 250 Savage, this year a 6.5x284, next year a .270, 7mm Mag, or maybe even a .260, see me. I can make it happen for you!

    Barrel Break in

Honestly I couldn't say that barrel break in helps in accuracy, but what I have found it sure makes the barrel easier to clean for the life of the barrel afterwards. By the way most of the barrel manufactures have a break in procedure on their website, so they must think its a good idea.

Hunter shoots at dead deer on cart, hits other man

If you are wondering how this could happen, spend a couple of days on a public rifle range.

    My Blood is Boiling!

Somebody's math is off 64% is not a D by the NRA's grading curve, they gave him a B+. I can't believe there hasn't been more responses to this. This guy is a double douche bag and doesn't deserve public office. He is no friend to any gun owners that is for sure. The post about him almost getting Rio closed is 100% true, if you enjoy shooting there just remember when you get to the voting booth that you could be driving to Ben Avery to shoot, because of this guy.
  5. Just got my copy of the American Rifleman special election issue, telling everyone who to vote for. State House of Representatives District 25 Russell Rusty Bowers. I served on the board at Rio Salado Sportsmans Club before it was turned over to game and fish, this slippery, oily weasel had a piece of land next to it that some developer wanted his hands on. It was a continuous fight to keep the range open. If you live in 25 or know someone who does please keep this guy out of office. Thanks!

    Rifle and bore cleaning

First have to agree with a bore guide, ask anyone who puts barrels on full or part time and they will tell you that more of them are ruined by improper cleaning than anything else. Agree with the one piece coated rod, have Deweys and BoreTech, love the BoreTech. If you ask 20 different people about cleaning you will get 20 different answers. I know of a very successful shooter who only cleans her gun every third or fourth blue moon.

    30-30

I have hunted 36B for years and there are places down there where 300 yards is a close shot, but I have shot one that was about 60 yards. A thirty-thirty wouldn't be my first choice, but sometimes you have to go with what you have, and with proper shot placement that Marlin will put meat in the freezer like anything else.

thinking its "funny" to kill a deer

Maybe I'm a little behind the times, only thing that I hunt with that is battery operated is a GPS, but in my pack is a Silva compass that I use more than the GPS, if I want to go somewhere it is with boot leather. Haven't shot anything past 400 yards. Been hunting since about as early as I can remember, truth be told maybe I was a little blood thirsty when I was 13-14, but now that I'm much older if I have to kill something that's when I will take up golf.

thinking its "funny" to kill a deer

I was Duck hunting a few years ago and one of the guys downed one and let out a primal scream, I was kinda embarrassed. Kinda like watching a football game and one guy dances around like its the first time he's ever been in the end zone and another guy will just hand the ball to the ref. I wanted to ask the guy if he had ever killed anything before but I just kept quiet.

Defiantly military brass, the LC is lake city arsenal and the number stamped is the year it was made. Military brass is thicker than store bought brass and most loading manuals state that you should go a grain or two less. Of all that brass that I could see was not match brass and made to be linked for like machine gun ammo. Don't know if there would be a market for that or not. Plus side is if your shooting that stuff in a bolt gun it will go bang and last several reloadings.

    Who turns necks?

Used to do all that, even index each piece of brass. Started using Lapua brass, no need for it now.
  13. Don't know about the threads on a Browning if they are metric or standard. If they are metric, good luck finding anyone in the valley that will do it. I know a retired machinist in Tucson that has done a couple of Tikkas, PM me if you want more info.

    .270wsm vs. .300wm

Sonof12, Don't know for sure what Jack would say about the .270 WSM, but on March 2nd, of this year I was shooting a match at the Tucson Rifle Club with Eldon Buck Buckner, and since I had just got a .270 WSM, I ask Buck what would Jack think of them, his reply was he would have thought them redundant.

    Factory ammo repeatability question

One thing with factory ammo is that there is noting that states that they have to use the same components lot after lot, basically they have to load their ammo that will go bang in at least 4 different kinds of guns. The best way to get things in your favor is to buy more than one box of ammo at a time and make sure the lot numbers on the box match up. Also nothing makes a handloader scratch his/her head than to have a load work and the next time using the same components not shoot worth a darn, it happens but not as often as factory ammo.

NEED HELP WITH A VORTEX SCOPE

It used to be that most drop charts were put together with the scope 1.5 inches above the center of the bore, don't know how they figure it now, I use the did hit method on all my rifles. Don't know about now but most scope manufactures were pushing a very large objective lense, with the pretense of more light capability, which sounds great but your eye will only take in so much light so that is bs and coupled with the fact that you had to use higher rings to mount the scope which did nothing but pull your head off the stock to see the cross hair. If you look at most scopes that are designed for competition you will find them between 30-40mm. Just my opinion and that is like everything else everyone has one.

NEED HELP WITH A VORTEX SCOPE

From what I was able to see that is a pretty large objective lens on the end of that scope and plenty of daylight between the scope and barrel that would be the first thing I would look at. The following is just my two Abe's so run with it how you will. I spent 8 years in a Field Artillery unit which is just something that goes bang on a much larger scale, you can come up with any drop chart you would like that is your should hit data, take the gun to the range shoot it at the different ranges that you my think you might use, that is your did hit data. My best advise is always go with your did hit data!

Well Mr. Average Joe, I had always heard that Marines were the first to go, but in the unit that I was in (82ND Airborne) we said that the only way any Marine was going in before us is if the President dialed the wrong number. AIRBORNE!

    Protest?

Not really into politics or posting on this particular forum, but just spend four days in the St Louis area, locals tell me that Ferguson is mostly a blue collar neighborhood, so they are coming from another area to protest/loot and reek havoic. One thing that I'm sure of, all of the work shoes/boots are reasonably safe there.

    Dove hunting

On the 202 SanTan between Ariz Ave and McQueen has a lot of birds, if you are a decent shot, I think you could have your limit before the cops hauled you off to the can.

Check out this Pink Rattlesnake from Ben Avery

I don't think this particular snake was pink but here goes, I remember an article in the paper in the early 70's, it involved a man on a bike who was heavily tattooed and apparently heavily intoxicated, he was riding either to or from Canyon Lake and found a rattlesnake on the road, soon a crowd had gathered to see what the hoopla was about, at first our hero was going to simply shoot the snake with his handgun, but with the crowd around him and enough alcohol in him he decided to go mano to mano with the snake and handed his gun to someone in the crowd. Well after being bitten several times a Sheriffs deputy showed up and got an ambulance there, the hero ask the Sheriff to retrieve his handgun before getting into the ambulance, party that received the handgun apperantly drove off with it.
