I feel bad for Mrs. Mullins

LOL! I feel bad for her too! I dated her for 6 years before marrying her just to make sure she was fully aware of what she was gettin' herself into!!

3. Hey everyone, I saw that this video was finally posted up on Wired Outdoors website and wanted to share it with you all here. I unfortunately was booked up elsewhere and could not be on this hunt, but our friend Dusty Mathis stepped up to the plate and donated his time to organize, outfit and guide the hunt for us! My brother Tommy and a bunch of other great folks donated their time and talent as well and you'll see they all shared an unforgettable experience! Wired Outdoors was able to participate and film the entire hunt and as you'll see in the video they are awesome folks! Thanks to Wired Outdoors for all you do! I posted this on my site as well but I saw the video didn't show up on here so here ya go. It's kinda long and you might also want to have a dry hankie or tissue handy, I know I got choked up pretty bad!
4. Alrighty guys and gals, I seriously wanted to write a big story filled with pics for ya'll but I absolutely have no time and I just found out that I'm headin' down tonight to 35B to help fill some tags! Kaibab will have to wait, there's Coues to kill! I'll write a full story later, but here's a very fast version... Steve and I backpacked up a big mountain. Steve made a one shot kill at 408 yards. We packed the buck off the mountain. Obviously, there were several days involved with the hunt along with plenty of prior history and amazing experiences throughout...but I gotta wait till I have more time! Here ya go, it's not the highest scoring buck but I guarantee you'd have a hard time finding one with more character! Congrats to Steve, it was an unforgettable hunt! JIM>
5. Doing this off my phone so hope it works. Just finished an incredible hunt with a friend and will post up story later when i can. I'll try to post a pic of our high mountain camp, i'm betting this one pic will describe our hunt nicely for now! Congrats to all the lucky hunters so far! JIM
6. Hey Aaron, you lit the fire under my rear, I posted up some pics for you all, enjoy! Full story with more pics will follow.... Here's the link to the pics.... http://www.coueswhit...-the-shed-buck/
7. Devin you are an animal! You consistently put down or help put down huge bucks, seeing this one doesn't surprise me at all! A true buck of a lifetime right there, the rarity of seeing, let alone killing, a typical 3x3 of that caliber is astounding and I'm sure you earned every inch of that one! HUGE congrats to you man!!! JIM>
8. Thanks again all! I'll get story and pics up as soon as I can. I've got a muzzy Kaibab tag burnin' a hole in my pocket right now and trying to switch gears as fast as I can! Kevin, this buck is at least 8 years old and quite possibly a little older. I put the sheds that he dropped in 2009 up against him yesterday and it's absolutely amazing how much of his character traits stayed the same from then till now. He's obviously much heavier and bigger overall but the sheds fit like puzzle pieces against his current frame! The dropper was the main difference as it was just an upright inline in the 2008 rack. Shorty, yer nuts dude, I learned from you! GBA, This was the 3rd client I've taken in there trying to kill this buck. I know there are several guides out there that would never take a client, or a friend or even a family member, into a spot where they know a really big buck lives. You can look at their portfolio's, borochures or websites and easily see who's sittin' behind the biggest critters and that'll tell you all you need to know. There's nothing wrong with that and most clients don't pay attention to or even think about that, but they probably should! I make a living at guiding and to be the best I can be to my clients I need to give them the best I have. I get all the satisfaction I need out of just knowing I had a big part in creating the experience for somebody, I don't need to be the one pullin' the trigger or the guy with the biggest collection. I just love the hunt! Thanks for the kind comments and yes, the Mountain House is good eatin', except for the beef stew, I can do without that one! I'll try to get a story up asap, thanks again all!
9. Thanks for reply's all! Yes, i believe Amanda put a pic on facebook. I wish it was me with the tag but it was a friend of mine instead that got this amazing buck. You've all seen his sheds several years ago when we did a "Guess the Score" contest with them here. I've been trying to kill this buck ever since and finally had a guy willing to pack in with me and we got it done! This is a very hard buck to score, i have a rough idea but will wait till Amanda gets back and have her figure it out! My buddy Steve busted his butt with me and made a perfect 408 yard shot, congrats go to him! Thanks agian, JIM
10. .Hey all, we are home and gearing up for the next round of hunts! The first hunts were a blast! Everyone chased big bulls and had opportunities and in the end everyone left with all the experiences and memories one could hope for! We were fortunate to catch a few of the kills on tape and I've been trying to round up all the footage and kill photos. I've got most of them now and just put a short video together for you all that can't wait for the finished product! I'll be putting together the individual hunt videos and ultimately a final video with all the hunts and experiences combined. Stay tuned for the next videos and until then, best of luck on your hunts! JIM. View the full article

Best of luck and hope to see a story here with you and your first elk! If it's not too late, take your elk to Casey's. You will have a very hard time finding any negative feedback about Casey's Processing!

Has this ever happened to one of your dogs?

dam, that and several other posts here are hard to read! Very sorry to hear about your loss Bobbyo! I had the same experience with my black lab, Zeus. All the way up to his last day he was very energetic and healthy but when I came home from work one day I immediately noticed he didn't come greet me and found the same thing. He was 9 years old but appeared healthy and without any issues. He just passed away and it appeared as though it happened in his sleep. I didn't have any autopsy done but was very curious why he died so suddenly without some sort of regression in health. I figured it was a heart attack and had several people tell me that's prolly what it was. I was thankful that it appeared to be quick and he never suffered through any painful issues. Get a new puppy Bobbyo, it helps a ton! JIM>

Had a big day last Thursday

Congrats Casey and to your lovely new bride! Looks like you are in the same boat as me now, we both have gorgeous brides that are WAY out of our league! How'd you do it? Does she have poor eyesight like my wife? Mine is blind as a bat thankfully, otherwise she wouldn't have married me! LMAO! Congrats brotha on the marriage and especially the baby!!! JIM>

First Hunts Highlights Video

Hey all, congrats to all the successful Elk hunters, looks like there's been some great hunts had by CWT.com members! I recently bought a new computer and software and just spent the last few days screaming at it, throwing things at it, and pulling all my hair out over it. Eventually I won the battle and finally figured it out...for the most part at least I don't have all the footage yet from our first hunts but since I have no patience I slapped together my first video with what I do have. Keep in mind this is my first attempt with this new software and my projects should get better from here on out! There is a special treat towards the end of this video that I know you all will love, and it's the primary reason why I just couldn't wait any longer to share this with you all! A buddy of mine, David, happened to be in the right place at the right time with the camera and it just happened to be one of my favorite bulls! Enjoy! JIM>

First Hunts Highlights Video

Thanks all! The fight scene is incredible and after I went and investigated I found that the fight had been going on for a long time prior to the video! For almost 100 yards long and on both sides of that road those bulls had been tearin' it up! I found blood, several pieces of antler from the smaller bull and even the 4" tip off of the big bull's right G5! I still can't believe that's all he broke! That video was taken during the archery hunt and he was very killable for several days but we didn't have any hunters left with a tag! We were certain we would take him with one of our rifle hunters, and I even gave him the piece of tine so he could glue it back on, but it just wasn't meant to be. I've watched GQ for several years now and like all our other older bulls this year he was considerably smaller than last year. I have him featured on my "Hit List" video that I posted during the summer and you can see how he's changed over the years. Bulls like that just don't get big by being dumb and I have more respect for them now than ever before! Glad you all liked the video! JIM>

.270 Effective Range

All I know is there are a TON of folks out there in the hunting community that need to take notice and follow in your footsteps! Kudos to you for practicing and making a solid effort into knowing what your limitations and capabilities are with your weapon! You deserve the biggest buck on the mountain and I sincerely hope we get to read the story about it here on CWT.com! Best of luck to you! JIM>

Leaving a Bull overnight

I also gotta say, I witnessed several bulls shot last week. 1 was with a 4 blade Slick Trick and 2 with the new Ulmer Edge heads. The only reason we killed the 1 bull with the Slick Trick head was because there was a razor sharp fixed head being jabbed around inside that bull as he ran. We lost 1 of the Ulmer Edge bulls, fortunately the video shows that bull will survive and the arrow only penetrated 2-3 inches at the most and fell out 10 yards after the hit, I'm not sure if a different head would've made a difference here but I think it could have. And the second Ulmer Edge bull was broadside at 35 yards and the shot was perfect but the arrow only penetrated enough to hit 1 lung. We unfortunately had to sit there and listen to that bull expire for an hour. The hunters bow was set around 60 pounds and the arrow didn't hit any ribs! The broad head made a big entrance cut and I think that's what killed it's energy and greatly limited it's penetration. I don't like knockin' products, that's not my intention here, but these are factual events that took place and I have on tape! I know which heads I'll make sure to use in the future and which ones I'll steer clear of! Razor sharp and fixed! There's a lot of bulls being shot and lost lately and I'm curious how many of them were shot with mechanicals. JIM>

Leaving a Bull overnight

I've got a new experience to share with you all and it goes right along with what Brian Payne and Tines are talking about. This happened to my client and I last week and it's one of the very rare times I've ever thought about "pushing" a wounded bull! I would never advise it and was actually thinking about not tellin you all about it because I wouldn't want anyone to think it's a good option. Pushing a wounded animal is very risky and there are VERY few situations where it should even be considered. The only time I can think of where it's necessary to push a wounded bull is if bad weather is threatening. If you see a bad rain storm or snow coming, you have no choice but to track em up early. The situation I'm gonna describe to you is the first time I've pursued a wounded bull right away. Last week my hunter had a bull jump the string bad! The bull actually started to take off right at the shot and the arrow hit mid level and right in front of the back leg, total gut shot! Like always, I stayed put and tried to follow the bull with my eyes and ears to see where he went or how far. I didn't take off after him but I was able to step to the side a few steps and could see the bull standing all alone in a clearing, his cows were all gone and everything was quiet. The arrow only penetrated halfway and I could see it hurt him to move and that's why he stopped running about 50 yards from the shot. I knew my hunter was using a fixed 4 blade Slick Trick broad head and could tell that the back leg on the bull moved that arrow with every step. The ground was soft and moist so tracking conditions were perfect and the wind was in our face. Because of all these details I decided we needed to sneak in and get another arrow in the bull. Any other time I would've backed out for at least 8 hours but in this situation I knew that worst case scenario is we bump him and when he takes off that arrow will be doing more damage internally. And again, this is only because I could see the arrow was right in front of the back leg where I know the leg would move the arrow as he walked. We snuck up to him but the damage had already been done from when he ran the first time and the broad head cut the femoral artery and the bull was down surprisingly fast with no more shots necessary. I was freaking out the entire time as we pushed in on the wounded bull, I kept thinking this is going completely against everything I've learned and know to do! Knowing that my hunter was using a razor sharp fixed 4 blade head and where the arrow was at were the only things keeping me from backing out. We were either gonna push the bull allowing the head to cut more, or we were going to get another arrow in him. We were very lucky in this situation and if my hunter had been using a mechanical broad head I'm almost positive the outcome would have been different! Points to take away from my experience here is use the sharpest fixed blade broad head you can find when hunting Elk, and there are VERY few situations that would dictate tracking a wounded bull before waiting the appropriate time. I never once tracked that bull last week, I could see him the whole time. If I couldn't see him and exactly where the arrow was at I would've backed out and waited at least 8 hours! JIM>

Thank You CouesWhitetail.com!!!

WOW! I'm excited to hear sharing some of my experiences has helped you and possibly others! That is exactly what I love about CWT.com and why I'm proud to be part of it! Huge congrats to you Millhouse and your nephew, I'm sure that was an experience he'll never forget! You did a great job in tracking and taking care of that bull and I guarantee Casey will do a great job with the meat! I took a bull to him last week as well and hopefully picking it up this week!

2012 Archery Bull Hunts Are Underway!

Thanks Amanda and Ilene, we've had an amazing season so far and it's just getting started! We donated a fully outfitted hunt to a very deserving young man thru the HOAL organization and that hunt takes place next Friday in Unit 10! I'm very fortunate and humbled to have such great guys on our team that are willing to donate their time and money to this young man and his family! When I return after these next hunts I'm certain I'll have some awesome video and stories to share. Thanks and best of luck to all still with a tag! JIM>
