Ah, ok. I just read it. Seems the 'combine' guess is a common one. 😉

That's the same video, no??
-
I'm guessing either hit by a vehicle or maybe run over by a farm implement while bedded.
-
Another good guess, but no. I had never met him either.
-
I seem to recall something like that way back in the Jack O'Connor days.

Good guesses, but no. I met Householder but didn't know him well. My mentor was actually older than both of them, and he and his son (who was about Hirsch's age) were noted for a certain discipline of hunting. In contrast, Hirsch and I were good friends from about 1969 until his death in 2007. In the 1990s, Kurt VonBesser, the owner of Atsko Inc. (Snowseal, UV Killer. Etc.) and I drew archery elk permits in unit 7W. Hirsch let me use his 23' trailer for Kurt's comfort. It had seen a lot of neglect in the kitchen and bath areas. So when we got done with the hunt, I told Hirsch to leave it with me for while and I'd get it fixed up. I completely rebuilt the cabinet area that held the sink, stove and oven and replaced the floor that had warped because of a water leak.

$$$ REDUCED Signed 1985 edition -- BOWHUNTING IN ARIZONA

Depends on what they come looking for. 😂 I had already gifted a Ruger 77 .270 & a Win. M1400 12 ga. to my oldest many years ago. I sold off all the rest of my guns to finance trips to Africa and New Zealand in 2003 & 2004 respectively. Now I only have two rifles left -- my trusty M70 .264 and a custom .300 WM that Robar built for me using a M700 action. Those too will soon go up for sale. -

Not a bad deer hunter either. We hunted together in Iowa for whitetails and had some great company of that time period. -- baseball pros, Jim Eisenreich & Freddie Patek and NFL ex-QBs, Lynn Dickey and Tony Adams. -
Wow, that is one neat tall buck. Congrats. 👍

I have two sons and a daughter. Oldest in his late 50s no longer hunts, and has produced my only natural grandchild -- a girl who is now 23. My youngest son is in mid-50s & an Army vet of 12 years, and he does hunt whenever he gets a chance. He killed a nice bull and a good buck while living in WY two years ago. Now he's back in TX. He married a TX lady about 20 years ago; she already had three kids, who became my adopted grandkids and are all out of the nest already. My daughter -- also mid-50s -- tho married twice, couldn't have kids because of medical issues. As for "stuff," You ain't seen nothing until you visit my place. I have two huge, added-on store rooms attached to my 25'x25' shop, which is cramed with about every DIY type electric & air power woodworking tool known to man., mechanic tools, welder, etc. My converted 2-car garage "office" has a huge wall of closets, one with a bookcase, and there are other built-in cabinets on other walls and in a 6'x10' room that was once my darkroom. Add four, legal size, 4-drawer file cabinets, one of which contains a 50-yr. accumulation of my 35mm slides. And then there's all the crap I put up in the attic. If I recall I have three large boxes with dozens of new logo-type baseball hats nested together in them, an accumlation of 50 years or so. And thank you for the last comment. I appreciate it. -

Cool. 👍 I can't recall why I have these because I wouldn't have bought them. I'm thinking they might have been comps because I had supplied photo(s) to the AWF. I don't want to go looking through them, however, in order to keep them like new. -
In the early 1980s, Jim Tallon -- my mentor early on in the outdoor writing business -- and I had coffee/breakfast every morning at the Smitty's on Bethany Home & 35th Ave.

Could be. I was long out of the gun selling business when that would have happened. Quit in 1976 when we bought our lodge at Vallecito Lake, Colo. I got back in only briefly when we returned to Phx in 1979. I needed a job and my old Woolco mgr. needed a sporting goods mgr. I hired on but told him it would only be a temp deal. A few months later, I went to work as a wholesale road rep for another CA company selling photography related stuff in AZ, NM and Las Vegas. Yup. I had a PM conversation with another member , and that's how we remembered it. Govway was like an airplane hanger and later became a skatng rink. He also brought up one of my hangouts in the 1960s, Bellow's Sporting Goods at 27th Ave. & Camelback. My dad had a gas station next to Fergison's Cafeteria on the corner of 27 Ave. and Indian School. I worked for him as a mechanic until about 1969 when they tore up the road to widen it, sending his business south. Ed Bellows and I, plus two others, did a DIY horseback hunt in Colorado's San Juan Mts. one year. One of my hunting mentors on all things AZ also hung out there. I'll see if anyone might be able to guess who it was.

Been many years since I roamed anywhere in Tucson other than on I10. I know for sure that some of the heads were Bob's but not all.

Javelina -- Research and Management in Arizona by Gerald Day is the definitive book about javelina. It's well written and an easy read. This 127-pg. paperback was published by the AZ Game & Fish Dept. in 1985 and is no longer available there. Here are some used ones on Amazon for price comparisons. Example 1. Example 2. My copy is in very good condition. I will consider reasonable offers but no trades. Payment via PayPal (buyer doesn't need an acct; just a CC or checking acct.) or cash only. Must be picked up near 67th Ave. & Camelback in Glendale, AZ or shipped at buyer's expense. ($4) SOLD -
I think it was Bohm's Shooting Supply, no?. When I left Woolco in the early 1970s, I went to work as a road rep for American Wholesale Hardware out of Long Beach, CA. At the time is was a major wholesale house for fishing gear & firearms, including the #1 seller in the country for Ruger. My territory was all of AZ, so I dealt with most of the places that sold sporting goods in the state. I even got to meet Linda Ronstadt one day while doing business with her dad Gilbert at his Hardware store in Tucson. She came to go to lunch with her dad, and he invited me to go along. BUT..I had to turn it down because I had another sales appointment at Jensen's, which I don't think exists now.

The Yates store on 40th St. just south of Thomas was another one we "comparison shopped." L.V Yates was an avid outdoor type and really enjoyed hiking. I think there's at least one trail in the Phx. Mt. Preserve named after him. He often gave outdoor writers special deals on equipment.

Wow, you must be as old as dirt. 😉 I remember both Fedmart and Govway, but I can't recall which one was on W. Indian School between 35th ave. & 43rd. One of the owners of Fedmart was Sol Price, who later started Price Club -- now Costco!

No doubt. I often comparison shopped the YF that was near the Tower Plaza Penny's store. So during the deer season, we would drop our 30-30 price to $3.99. Those were also the days of 99 cent gals. of Coleman fuel promos.

After I left the Jewel Box in the early 1970s, I managed a JC Penny's and then a Woolco sporting goods department. In both, we usually sold the low-base dove & quail loads for $2.99 reg and $1.99 on promo ads. A brick of .22 Win. LR (10 boxes) was $5.99 on sale. Common centerfire such as .30/.30, .243, etc. was anywhere from $5.99 to $10.99 for magnum stuff. Those were the days of $49 Ruger 10/22s & $99 Win. M94s.
