    Name that gun!

Interesting read, although with a lot of likely true assumptions. Thanks.

    1/4 mile rule

Some of you might not have been born or were too young to remember, but some idiot used a crossbow to kill a huge bull elk on the YMCA grounds in Estes Park, Colo. about 25 years ago. Samson was the town's pet bull. Thus several states, including AZ, subsequently put heavy fines in place for illegally killing trophy type critters. They became known as Samson's Law(s).

    1/4 mile rule

That is correct for the statewide law. I was referring to the rule in Prescott Valley. I also think other local towns, including Flagstaff had such a rule in place before the statewide ban was implemented.

    1/4 mile rule

The ARCHERY rule was put in place in 2013 more for aesthetics than for safety concerns. I seem to recall the impetus came from Prescott Valley where one or more dingbats decided to pursue antelope in a developed area. One wounded a buck that wandered into an elementary school yard to die in sight of the students. I also recall a similar incident with a deer near Flagstaff but the details are fuzzy.

Yeah, the action and ring could be Turkish, but the rounded shoulder stock seems off. 🤷‍♂️

    Name that gun!

Haven't a clue but will guess it has either a European or Asian military origin.

    Mountain house scam

No need at this point of my life. Much prefer a filet mignon, small lobster tail, some fries and an ear of fresh corn, thank you.

    Mountain house scam

Tower Plaza at 32nd St & Thomas. Took a $500K dept. to over $1mil in two years, and that was after they dumped handguns. I greatly expanded the long guns by bringing in Sako, Ruger, Charles Daly, Browning and Weartherby. Also added a reloading section -- the only one in the country within a Penny's store. I later did the same at the Woolco store at Cave Creek & T-Bird, which I set up from scratch. The days of the $49 10/22 and $99 M94.

    Mountain house scam

On the web site MH claims the food is still vacuum packed. The new packaging doesn't look that way, but I'm thinking the two servings in the master pack are vacuum packed and separate. So end result, it's no different than before at $5 a serving in a double wrap. Of course, it would take opening a package to find out.

    Mountain house scam

When I was managing a sporting goods dept. for J.C. Penny in the early 1970s, we took on a line of freeze dried foods. I'm not positive, but I believe it was MH. I tried one entre --maybe beef w/gravy -- and the vanilla ice cream; that was enough for me. 🤮 I would prefer Spam.

I'm confused. 🤪 To me, it appears they simply updated the packaging. Did you order beef stroganoff or not?
  17. GAME AND FISH NEWS Sept. 17, 2020 Deer, elk hunters: Register now for Chr onic Wasting Disease webinar Sept. 24 Arizona's deer and elk populations remain free of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) due to diligent surveillance efforts. PHOENIX — The Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) encourages all deer and elk hunters to view a live webinar Sept. 24 about Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), a fatal wildlife disease that affects the nervous system of these animals. “What Hunters Should Know About CWD” is being presented by the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIPRAD) and hosted by Nick Pinizzotto, CEO of a unified organization combining both the National Deer Alliance and Quality Deer Management Association. Arizona’s deer and elk hunters can register now for the webinar, which begins at 9:30 a.m. (Arizona time). The event will also be livestreamed on CIDRAP’s CWD YouTube channel. No cases of CWD were discovered in the 1,200-plus deer (mule and white-tailed) and elk that were harvested in Arizona and voluntarily submitted for testing in 2019. In addition to hunter submissions, AZGFD collects samples from across the state through partnerships with meat processors and taxidermists. AZGFD has been testing for the presence of the disease in Arizona since 1998. While CWD has been found in the neighboring states of Utah, New Mexico and Colorado, the disease has not been detected in Arizona. CWD has not been documented to cause disease in people.

    Name that gun!

Neat. I have two firearms passed down to me from my grandfather. One is Parker Bros. 10 ga. that was made sometime in the late 1800s. It's a rare gun because there were only a handful made with 36" Damascus barrels. I need to take some close-up pix. Here it is hanging in my trophy room.

Input wanted - Hunting with a 10 year old

To add a little levity, be sure to have an apple with you. Here's why................ My oldest son's first hunt for deer when he was 10 in 1972 was on the N. Kaibab. He had already shot a pronghorn that Sept. Along on the deer hunt was my dear old Italian grandfather, referred to as Papa or Pop by us. He was already in his 70s, so I usually left him at an ambush point with a decent view of the surrounding area. Back then, a buck or doe was still legal for every tag. Then I would take off and still hunt, trying to make some semblance of a circle where my return to where I had left him would be a mini-deer drive. It normally worked like a charm, and he would end up tagging a doe for the pot. Sometimes a deer just wandered by him naturally, like a 3x3 buck he tagged one year. Knowing my son wasn't ready to hunt like I did, I left him with Pop. So on this trip I had two people to help fill a tag one or way or another. And that's what happened: my son tagged out the first morning, and Pop did so on the second day. Now fast forward a bunch of years after Pop quit hunting and my son was an adult (he's now 58). He and I were driving somewhere to hunt and we started discussing the old days. That's when he told me about the apple. After I had left them on the first deer hunt, Pop cut up an apple and handed two slices to my son. He told him to put a slice in each of his jacket pockets because the apple odor will attract the deer. He also warned my son, letting him know that he shouldn't tell me because I would think Pop was a bit goofy. Obviously the apple did its magic since they both killed deer. 🤣
