BEST CHOKE AND SHOT SIZES FOR QUAIL
thegunsmith2506 replied to coues hunter's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I like to shoot 7-1/2's with a full choke later in the season when the birds flush farther out. The first few weeks of the season, I like 8's and a skeet choke. Those birds are very tough to kill sometimes.... -
Thats awesome Josh! Just leave a few for the rest of us amatures.......

We went out to do little calling while scouting for deer this weekend. On the way in to our spot we found a set of cat tracks in the same place I killed a cat last Febuary. We decided to call the same exact stand as before. It is a very narrow clearing on the side of a creek. At about the 15min mark I see a cat step out of the brush about 10ft from my hunting partner. He couldn't see the cat in the thick brush, and I had no shot. The cat turned and left after just a few seconds. About a minute later, I caught movment at the top of the wash about 20yds in front of me. Another cat! It was hard to make him out through the brush, but I was finally able to pick him out. When I was pretty sure he wasn't comming in any closer, I decided to shoot him. I shot 3 times, since the brush was so thick. I was sure I had hit him good. With a little tracking from my buddy we found him about 20yds away. I decided its not a good idea to shoot through the brush with a shoutgun. We forgot the camera, so the pics had to wait till we got home. On our 3rd stand later in the day, we called from a small mesquite flat in a big nasty canyon. We setup with the call on the edge of a steep wash. I setup facing the wash, and my buddy was facing the hill with the wash at his back. Less than a minute into the cottontail dist a big male fox ran up out of the wash right next to my buddy. He waited for it to get out in front of him a ways, and then rolled him over with a load of lead BB's. I switched to fox dist, and in less than 30sec he was turned aiming down in the wash. I didn't see the fox untill she was right on top of the call. As soon as she cleared the call, he got her too. That was a pretty good day for us! Three stands, and 3 kills.

Bobcat Question???
thegunsmith2506 replied to thegunsmith2506's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
Thanks guys! Guess I should wait a bit for him to fur up better. -
I have a question for you guys. I got this cat on trail cam this week, and would like to try and call him in. Will he stay in the same area, or will he move on. This spot has lots of water, and shelter, and I imagine there is plenty for him to eat. Looks like a very spotted cat. Let me know what you think.

I agree! It is about that time. A few more weeks and the fur should be good. -
We went out to do a little deer scouting today and decided to make a few stands. About 10:00 we were on our second stand in a narrow wash. Less then 10min into the stand I looked up on the side of the wash, and there was a coyote staring at the call and decoy. I pointed him out to my wife, and she made a great shot. He was 42yds away, she was shooting 1-5/8oz 3in lead BB's. He was 26 lbs, and starting to fur up pretty good. The bad thing..... Her scope hit her during recoil and left a nasty gash.

I have had 4 of these cameras. My last one just died this last season. I had lost images a few times when the batteries went dead. I also had 2 cameras that would take pictures non stop from the time you turned them on till the went dead. Imho you can get a lot better cameras for $20 - $30 more. I think it is that simple.... you get what you pay for.

Congrats!

My best shooting rifle is built on an FN Mauser action. I would shoot the gun with some good quality ammo before doing anything to it. You never know what you might have. Good luck!
