From the looks of it, he was hit list worthy last year and gave everyone the slip. Good luck this year.

So Where's the Official Countdown to CC Hits
Sneaker replied to Nitemann's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
It is nice how things seem to be pretty predictable now, but it also seems like it is a little less exciting for some reason... -
Wow this is surprising, first I have heard of it. Surprised it didn't come up and become a public issue during the proposal stages. We always hear from the department how the cat numbers are doing just fine. So much for buying a lion tag for everyone's summer scouting trips...

That was kind of strange about Davis. He was very pro-ban, and even made a motion to ban them, then withdrew his motion, then he didn't even vote against the motion to keep them. Its interesting that it wasn't until he saw that he was going to lose the vote that he completely flipped sides...
-
I didn't know parachute plane scouting was a thing people actually did lol.
-
Nobody has supported the ban out of the first 8 or so speakers.
-
Blue slips lol, I went back and listed to it again. I have a feeling they are going to vote something into rule.

I like listening to his perspectives and have learned alot about the politics of hunting and public lands from his podcasts. I don't agree with all of his positions but he is a really good word smith and goes on some really unique adventures..

Reminder: Trail cam meeting/webcast tonight at main G&F office

And double check that you're a 1/4 mile from a water source?I just take a survey transit and shoot a line. Calculate the land lay and set my cam. Most quarter miles are more like 300 feet. The rule doesnt specify land lay or as the crow flys.300 feet is a quarter of a quarter mile.but how is it measured? Walking steps or a straight line? What if the water source is in a hilly area? You go ahead and explain that to azgfd that you put it 300 feet because you're a surveyor. Let me know how that goesI dont run cams on public water as it is. But I think its a good point, how do they measure? And Im not a surveyor. I just stayed at a holiday inn express last night! The G&F were very clear at their workshop that this, being a fair chase rule, would apply to public AND PRIVATE land. It would basically become an illegal way to hunt, anywhere in the state, unless they adjust their proposal. -

What I have never heard answered yet is why putting a camera on a dirt tank would be a unfair "fair chase" violation, but why hanging a camera on a natural seep or spring is not against fair chase? Not sure why they won't just come out and say the real issue. Its really not a fair chase issue or they would just ban all cameras period because they are "not fair". The only real problem is the situations with tons of cameras on one water. -
In highschool we did Whale Pass Lodge in the beginning of August I think. It was a little tough bushwhacking from beach to above treeline every day on the different islands we hunted, Whale, Kodiak, and Raspberry, but it was a lot of fun and we chased alot of deer with our bows. I want to try it again, been thinking maybe Prince of Whales Island trip though to avoid the grizzlies haha.

The fact that they only proposed banning them on "developed" waters means deep down it is not truly about fair chase. I can hang a camera on a spring or on salt and later kill off of it, but I can't hang a camera on a dirt cattle pond and then kill off of it? Meaning its more ethical to kill off a spring or off salt than a dirt tank? If anything I could argue that salt is the least fair chase of those options. They really are just trying to address congregating of cameras in populated spots to the point that it affects wildlife habits and creates hunter-hunter conflicts. I doubt they will be willing to call out specific units for the ban, so I think the only way to be totally fair to everyone in the state is to say Zero camera use is allowed in units with active deer or elk hunts in them, August through November. Simple, end of story. Game and fish would have to do no enforcement because the hunters would self police probably and do the department a favor and take down any cameras they happened to come across that were still out during the hunts, as many would probably not being ok with a fellow hunter getting an "unfair" leg up on camera use... funny, not funny. -
Don Martin wrote up a summary article in our paper about the Commission Meeting in Kingman last week. I was planning to attend and speak but couldn't get away from work that afternoon. 101 emails sent to Cook about the proposal. 46 for, 55 against. Mine was one of them. I like using cameras to scout because its really fun, kids love doing it with me, and it helps me be a more effective and selective hunter. I was thinking a middle ground might be to allow them only for pre-season scouting, disallow during times when that unit has active deer or elk hunts, but some units have those hunts from Aug until Jan so only the Aug guys would benefit... Maybe we could just put restrictions on the strip deer hunts and the most premium elk hunts, no during-season use on those since those seem to be the biggest problem? "Jay Cook, who is heading the department’s effort to address the Article 3 items, noted that the trail camera issue had generated more written comments than any of the other proposed recommendations. Cook said the department had received 46 emails in support of the one-quarter mile restriction on the use of passive trail cameras, while 55 comments had been received that did not support the recommendation." https://kdminer.com/news/2018/may/08/commission-postpones-trail-camera-decision-another/

Sportsmans Input Sought by ConserveandProtectAZ.org-Unit wide Raffle and Auction Tags
Sneaker replied to Jay Scott's topic in The Campfire
Doesn't pass the smell test to me at this point. Seems like they are just trying to take advantage of the recent lion initiative as a scare tactic to get what they want(more auction and raffle tags). Nothing about this seems like it mandates that it can ONLY be funded by taking tags away and giving them to auctions and raffles. Why not go about raising funds in some different ways? They know all the average joe Arizona sportsmen are against reallocating tags away from the general draw but are trying to do it anyway. -

Proposed rule change - no archery hunting in 1/4 mile of residences

Yes, with archery equipment, if you are following all other applicable rules(if outside city limits if city doesn't allow, if not on posted private property, etc). -
Proposed rule change - no archery hunting in 1/4 mile of residences
Sneaker replied to TwoGuns's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Here in Mohave County there are tons of remote dirt-road "subdivisions" in good habitat that the locals hunt archery in and around for pigs and deer. I haven't heard of any bad stories of people not playing nice around here. When they say "complaints about persons archery hunting near their private property" That is ridiculous as you are allowed to hunt ON private property if they don't post it, let alone "near" it. Its the law. Maybe they meant to say near their private "residences"? More rules and regulations are good right? -
Deer of the Southwest by Jim Heffelfinger
Sneaker replied to Speedy's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
He was just on the Grittybowman podcast discussing southern Arizona hunting. He mentioned it was coming out soon with another printing of it, so the book would be for sale again shortly.... -
You are not correct. There are several parts to the new proposals. Live actions is one section, regular game cameras on water is a different section.
-
As a suggestion "cameras on a developed water during any big game hunting season for the unit in which a water is located is unlawful"
-
If an officer pulls up to a water in August and there is a camera there, he would not have enough evidence in front of him to claim that this law was broken and he could take it in my opinion. What if I go to hunt my favorite water source and sneak in before daylight, and after light I see a camera on the water directly across from me? Do I leave? Do I go throw the dude's camera in a bush so if an officer pulls up I don't get a ticket?? Seems like there is so much wrong with the way it is worded. Needs to be all or nothing. What really matters is how the officers are going to interpret it.

I have a brother with a bunch of points and the new point guard system to thank for allowing me to chase bulls this September while carrying sharp projectiles!
