Hats off to jed and his buddy for doing so well on this hunt. It's a really cool thing when spending that much time and money scouting and it all comes together. Not only did they find those big bulls but they ended up harvesting them also, which is quite an accomplishment. Awesome job guys!!!!

The Buck I Never Dreamed Of
couesmagnet replied to tsquare602's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Firstcoueswas80 owes us all a cheese burger from the chuckbox down in tempe. I like mine medium rare, hows everyone else like theirs cooked. Just kidding, who hasnt been off on these awesome deer we all love to hunt, i know i have several times over the years. Scoring these things requires holding and scoring and making lots of mistakes over the years on several bucks. Every time i've been off over the years i always learn why i was and what threw me for a loop. The best way to really get a handle on the scoring these deer is to get as many big bucks in your hands as possible and sit down and score them, guessing first before you score them. In my opinion this is how you really learn. Everytime we shoot a really big buck we guess first and then after harvesting him figure out where and why he was either bigger or smaller than he actually was. On live deer i'm still trying to get a gauge on how to really judge body size cause that's the number one thing you have to know first in order to judge the deer relative to his body size. We've had some deer we've shot that had huge looking racks relative to body size and shot them thinking they were 110ish only to get up to them to realize they had very small bodies, and they go 102 to 105. If anyone has a method on judging body size in the field it would be nice if they would share this method with us all. It's the lone buck standing there on a ridge that it would be nice to have a method to judge body size. I was just kidding about the burgers firstwas80. -
There are at least 20 elk in on the mount ord complex. The biggest bull ive seen is a high 290's bull. 4 peaks has at least 3 times that number. There was a 400 incher shot up there 3 or 4 years ago. i know a couple places that are very remote that you could see 10 to 20 elk on a common basis. Of course there are much better places to hunt them in 22 south and non of these places will ever be otc.

Thanks tsquare620 for posting the tale of the tape for us all. Scoring these little guys is always a challenge, and it's a real challenge with extra special bucks like yours. Again , that is an awesome buck regardless of score, and i hope you get another one like that soon. Welcome to the site, and good hunting to you in the future!!!! -

Tsquare620 would you be so kind as to post the score sheet on your buck. Awesome bucks like yours are what I try to learn from scoring wise. It would be nice to see the tale of the tape on such a beautiful buck. Thanks -

Awesome buck , love the character and wish I had one like him. I think what's throwing everyone off on this buck is his main beams and spread. I'm guessing he has around 14 inch beams and a spread credit of maybe 12 inches. Mass on both sides is somewhere around 15 inches or less per side. G2s around 8 inches averaged and 5 and 7 inch g3s. Throw in the extras with the g4s being 2 and 3 inches and I'm coming up with 113 ish. Again awesome buck to say the least but where are people getting 130 out of this buck. -
On another website, posted by the people involved, the buck scores 147 inches. Can you even imagine that buck with the g2 thats broken on the right side still there? i'm not sure if the 147 includes the broken g2 or not, but this buck could have gone in the mid 150's .

San Carlos Unit B.....MONSTER!!!!!
couesmagnet replied to Apache7mm's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Funny, another big animal posted and right behind it all the bickering starts. What an awesome buck, what an awesome job finding and harvesting him!!! I also think it's funny how many hybrids people think there must be running around these days. Heck pretty soon 2 out of 10 deer will be hybrids to some. I don't buy the whole hybrids theory still, ya maybe one in a thousand type odds. Excellent deer, i want one with g2's like that.. -
I just wanted to thank both cody's from the outdoorsman's shop here in phoenix. Although i've been going there for years, somehow the customer service keeps getting better and better, even though it started out great already. I brought such a mess of thrashed tripods and binos into the store this year and both cody's helped me out trmendously, both in saving money by using parts i thought couldn't be fixed or giving me the real scoop on what to replace them with. Class act of a store and people. Thanks cody 1 and cody 2.

Wow, 2 nice 4 points. Awesome job!!

It sure is impressive how well the little guys are doing and i might add shooting. I would rather see the juniors kill good deer than the rest of us. I'm going to try to make it a habit to tag along on one of these hunts every year. I'm real proud of all the little fellas out there.

nosler partition long range bullet?
couesmagnet replied to couesmagnet's topic in Long Range Shooting
Good point dude, it's a 300 weatherby mark 5 ultra light. I'm currently shooting the nosler oartition head, 180 grain. -
I bought a caldwel lead sled dft last night . How much weight do you need to put on the bottom tray for the sled to be used properly. I have 2 seven pound sand bags and 2 10 pound weights for a total 34 pounds. Is this enough weight? If you used no weight on the sled will it shoot the same as a weighted sled? thanks in advance for any advice.
-
Thank you for the replies. My 300 weatherby is ported so kick is minimal.
-
Is it just me , but the junior hunters these days seem to be doing much better than the older fellas did when they were juniors. I'm amazed at all the nice bucks the little fellas are knocking down. Excellent job kayden.

Unit 9 Arizona Elk Hunt Success Photos
couesmagnet replied to Jay Scott's topic in Jay Scott Outdoors/Colburn and Scott Outfitters
There are way better bulls in other units than in 23.... crappy unit... I personally hate hunting there... Couldn't agree with you more gino, well said. 23 is starting to resemble 4b for elk. Gino i'm still trying to locate the rest of your coues deer stands, what color truck do you drive? Dave
