It's been awhile since i have helped with a hunt here,Most years not that great, many, many broken up bulls I don't know what your goals are, but if you have killed big elk hold out for a stud,if not shoot the first 300 inch bull you see It can really be super muddy on this hunt, so bring 2 sets of chains and extra gas,My buddy killed a broken up 380 bull had to prove to them were he shot it cause this isn't the norm for this hunt.this isn't a Dry Lake hunt, so don't expect to see big bulls or many bulls for that matter on this hunt

Anything we can do to stop the money hungry machine that is AZGFD?
Seldom Drawn replied to bonecollector777's topic in The Campfire
Yes my bad,i put in for a lot of states every year as a non resident,I wasn't looking at it from a resident to resident Price so I agree, I guess AZ is really high.I know people with kids it is tough to be able to put them all in you have a year to save the money even then it can be tough,it is for me and my family. -

Spouting off? Spout off really, If you want to hunt Utah, comparable to Kaibab, or the Stirp it's $463.00 to $563.00 What about Archery Elk in New Mexico, compared to units 5.6.7.8.9 and 10 in az i think it's around $750.00 -
They have closed the roads every year for the last 35, that I can remember has nothing to do with obama,,I don't know where you were but there is mud everywhere .it also gives the animals 3 months of being chased all around.this warm weather really sucks half the shed hunters are out there thinking they have all dropped,

I am a single dad with four kids and five grand kids,if you can't afford to put you and you family in then what about a 2-3 day quail or rabbit hunt with them, or a dove ,or squirrel hunt.some of my best memories are on these kinds of hunts. I know all about taking the girls to scouts, cheer and all the 4 to 5 days a week of sports that go with my family, how many of you complaining do all this and work 2 jobs, or are you just working the normal 40 hour work week, have the lifted truck with nice wheels, the big house you don't really need,,don't put yourself in and put your kids in,AZ is still a heck of a lot cheaper then a lot of states, I have had as hard a time in my life then most but hunting is amazing with my family, and if it means eating ,macaroni and cheese to be able to put them in well that's what I do.and how many of you diesel up pull the 33 toy hauler up the hill and spend a whole 2 1/2 days then head home. -
Waiting tell the last minute only matters if you put in paper and live, outside the valley they dump all the Flagstaff and Pinetop paper on top of the valley apps then everyone else is second after that.

ive always skinned as usual with care taken around the glands, just thought he meant something else. When I was a kid all the experts would tell you to remove the scent gland, we didn't know any better,it's on the back,on the outside of the skin it's the stinky part of the pig you smell .move the hair on the back and look for a big areola a human nipple must have been why people didn't like eating them useing the same knife on the scent gland then cutting the meat good stuff, all you have to do is skin it and it comes off the opposite side.

Take it to a taxidermy let them mount it and sell it,i was offered $3,500 dollars one time to do this.WM didn't even care to look at the kill site, still bugs me to this day looked like it was poached but he really didn't care.

Snow camo is fine,we all get caught up in modern tech, me included,I have killed more animals in my life wearing wranglers.a white t shirt and a cowboy hat most of the time a white straw.it's amazing how much we spend on camo I wear it more to hide from other hunters, not the animals.

I have seen them in unit 10 with 10-18 inches of snow and the temp being -8 below,we have killed them for 30 plus years in the snow I think it is kind of a myth over the years they can't take the cold.they don't really have any problem with cold temps.many times out calling elk at 1 or 2 am with a fulll moon I have seen them feeding,I have also called in turkeys at this time feeding when most think they are roosting in a tree. Killed them on mingus in the 70's with a foot of snow temps were like 18,unit 22,34a way up high.ever hunted 9 in dec there are some of the biggest pigs you will ever see 60lb plus.I think we use to listen back in the day when people didn't have a a clue they can survive the cold. They use to tell us to cut the sent gland out as well.what a mistake that was.

Good article, But you guys get to caught up in moisture,we had 17 inches of rain this summer and 33 inches of snow so far here in Flag, that is one inch less then last year at this time I can take you to areas that it hasn't snowed since Dec 22, that still has 7 inches of snow how do you think the antler growth might be in this 3 mile section 90 percent of the hunters I take all talk about shooting a 400 inch bull but get trigger happy to kill the first 300 inch bull they see, the elk will be back to there normal year after year pattern, this year the places when we don't get much moisture, gets the best food growth,so the big time outfitters will kick butt this year they struggled so bad last year because 17 inches of rain had them scattered all over the units and they were so use to scouting there hot spots the elk weren't there, they didn't have a clue how to find them.Genetics is a major factor with antler growth, a lot of big bulls will find the food source,if you get drawn and don't have a lot of time to scout you might struggle finding a big bull this year ,sure wetter winters just means a lot more big bulls,if you hire an outfitter you should have a chance a a toad.this year they will kill some big ones.
