This thread, one of the most important ones on here, needs a resurrection. Taylor last year.

My most memorable shot was not taken by me. It was Taylor taking her first bull elk. If you look close, you can see the bull down at the top of the pointed stick in front of her. 160 yards, through the timber, under a branch, over a stump, threading the needle and putting the bullet exactly where it needed to go from a kneeling position with my .300RUM, and the bull just rolled over stone dead. Look at that tangled mess she shot through.

Nothing wrong with your kids shooting a deer bigger than any you have ever shot. Super proud moment. It is the fact that the parents are not teaching the kids about conservation, nature, skills, tracking, flora & fauna, terrain, weather, insects, predator/prey relationships, enjoying the outdoors, stopping to admire a flower or sunset, the chase, the disappointment of a blown stalk or miss, the hard work and time that precludes a shot, the hard and messy work of cleaning an animal, the hard work and effort packing out your own animal, the hard work of processing the animal, the hard work of preparing a meal from that animal, the fantastic memories and lessons learned in the field, and the satisfaction of eating the animal you harvested while admiring the rack on the wall.

One person's definition of "long range" is a chip shot to others. I have several rifles extremely capable of making "long range" shots out to 1K or more. I practice and shoot almost every weekend. A few thousand rounds a year from 10 to 1300+. Shotgunning, to .22s, to an AR, to high powered rifles. From a bench, prone, sitting, etc. Rarely do I shoot off hand other than hunting situations, and even then, if I have a chance at a tree branch/trunk/fence post, I will most assuredly use it. From fast flying doves, to quail, to jacks and cottontails, squirrels, and on occasion, big game if I get lucky. I also bow hunt. I work on loads all year long. Fine tuning, tweaking, experimenting, all in the quest for the absolute most I can wring out of my rifles. That extra .005" is an addiction. With all of that being said, besides a few coyotes at 320 & 1327 yards, my one long big game shot was 488 yards. Everything else has been under 160 yards. But I am always preparing for the long shot if the need ever arises.

Worth every penny. I love mine.

It is funny. People think there are mature 4x4s behind every tree up in the 12s & 13s. You still have to work for them. Sure, you can get lucky and see a brute on opening morning, but not the norm. 2 years ago, we saw 85 bucks in 9 days. Probably 5-6 were big. Still, another 15-20 were 120-150+ 4x4s. Still good odds, but that was with probably 80+ hours of glassing and moving. One day, we say 22 bucks. All 2x2s. From yearlings to 26" wide, but still all forkies. Last year, on the late hunt, in 3 days, we only saw 9 bucks. Wind had them down for the first 1.5 days before the opener. Day before opener, it quit at sunset, and we saw two decent bucks, 140-150ish at last light. Opening day was tough, saw a brute 3x3, 2 small 4x4s and a 3x3. Taylor shot her buck at first light on day 2, and we saw one other small 4x4 as we were hiking over to her buck. I am sure we would have seen a lot more deer, but Taylor popped her nice buck early in the hunt.

I just took a full set off of my wife's 25th anniversary present I bought her. 265/70r17 on Toyota TRD 4Runner rims. 330 street miles on them. Dunlop AT20 Grandtrek. They seriously still have the tits on the tread. Rims, tires, caps, lug nuts $600. No TPMS sensors.

A 6.5 CM should work on elk if you put a properly constructed bullet where it needs to go. 6.5x55 have been killing moose and red stags for years. That being said, it would not be my personal choice for an elk round.

The camera flash scared the crap out of her.

I would sight in for your CB shot. And the keep the following shot difference in mind if you need a follow up. You want 1st shot going where you want it. -

Anyone using a tango 6 sig sauer rifle scope?
lancetkenyon replied to Tac's topic in Long Range Shooting
All but one of my scopes are in the 31-36oz range. It is not weight that would keep me from buying one of them. It is tracking, reliability (not meaning the best warranty, but hopefully one I will never need to use), repeatability, glass quality, and features. -
Anyone using a tango 6 sig sauer rifle scope?
lancetkenyon replied to Tac's topic in Long Range Shooting
I have shot behind one of them, and SEVERAL different Swaros. X5, X5i, Z5, Z6, Z6i. I would give the glass nod to Swaro over the Sig I shot behind. Features were great however, better than the Swaros for my tastes, but glass goes to Swaro for my eyes. -
DSE nailed it. I use actual barometric pressure readings from my 1600B &/or Kestrel.

Is this the Axisworks suck up thread? Well....let me just get in line now...

16 Gauge O/U w/3" Chamber
lancetkenyon replied to AmericanThunder's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I have a Winchester model 12 that used to be my Grandpa's. It was not working when I got it. Tore it apart, cleaned it after probably 40 years of sitting, and took it out 2 years ago to try it out. 3 shots, 3 doves. It sits in my safe now. It is an early one, don't remember the year, but 90 years old or something like that. -
That looks like a Viper PST?

I know where there is a muley pick up rack that I have glasses up 4 or 5 times. But dang if I have ever had the desire to hike out and get it. Nasty, NASTY terrain to go get it about 2 miles away.

twist rate question
lancetkenyon replied to TexasHunter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
.270 Win? .270 WSM? Wildcat? Berger states a 1:8" recommended twist rate. Which means the slowest shooting .270 can stabilize it at sea level. Faster or higher DA only increases stability. Colder temps will decrease somewhat as well as some other very minor environmental factors like humidity. I like the 5R barrels, but think the 1:7.5" twist is a bit better rate. If they are both from reputable makers, take your pick. I think cartridge choice would help make my decision too. Right now, I am leaning toward the 1:7.5 6 groove if it is a good barrel maker. -
