    Moving a Gun Safe

I'm moved a lot of safes back in the day and they lay down on their back in a pick up as easy as anything (a little cardboard helps a ton if the truck doesn't have a plastic bedliner). Lean them in and pick them up from the bottom and gravity will do the rest. A dolly with straps and kick back wheels are a definite plus. Save the money on the trailer/ramp etc and rent a good dolly IMO.

.243 or 7-08 for Youth Cow

Sorry, to be clear adding a break to 7/08 would cost about $280 and for that, you are set for her with a larger caliber and almost zero recoil. I know money is money, but I added that to an existing gun vs buying a new caliber or being uncomfortable in case of shot placement etc.

.243 or 7-08 for Youth Cow

I saw this title and had to read, my boys were 10 and 12 on their first cow hunt and one shot a 7/08 (140corelokt I think) and one shot a 243 (100gr Nos partitions). The 7/08 was just behind the shoulder and she just layed down and died within mins. The 243 hit her right square on the shoulder, she walked off about 80yrds and I'm sure would have died eventually but after about 15-20min still had her head up. He put another one into her shoulder and she still didn't give it up for another 5mins or so. I felt really good about the partitions breaking her down, but sure didn't get the damage up inside I was hoping for. Totally agree shoot what is comfortable to her, but I will say my Daughter (very recoil sensitive) was 10 on her first cow hunt and 11 on her 2nd cow hunt and both were shot with a 270wsm with a brake (140 accubond). For $280 I was a lot more comfortable and she had less felt recoil than the 243. Just make sure the ear protection is on. If I had to it over again, I would have broken that 7/08 back then, but I sold it and ended up with this 270wsm at some point. Just a thought.

What am I doing with a late archery tag?

Not sure if this will help, but I've had 2 late archery tags. First one snowed a foot the day before the hunt and ruined any plans I had..I ended up not seeing an elk for 3 days but then when I found them, I was able to stay in elk pretty consistently for the next 7 days. Never being able to close within 80ish except for one surprise encounter. Water was everywhere, but I did try and sit water a few hunts over what looked like well used water holes, but no love. All remained in canyons and I couldn't get in front of one in those canyons and they had no reason to travel. 2nd hunt was complete opposite in a different unit.. warm weather and I thought oh boy I got this... no love on tanks and all bulls were in even bigger canyons with flowing water and same result. I decided to retire Nov/Dec archery elk hunts after that. However, that dry year, my son shot a 340 bull the week after the archery hunt at 60 yards with a rifle in the unit I had the previous year in the spot where I was planning on hunting before the foot of snow (Year before was covered by snow and teens, that year was Sept weather).. so I'm thinking it's possible if you get the right weather in a unit you know well. That is my .02. Good luck!!

    Dual mount back

We picked up my son's dual mount last weekend (yeah the little %#$$ got drawn twice in 3 years -- 2015 Rifle/2017 Archery), I thought cool enough to share and really to promote Troy at Authentic Taxidermy. He's only done these 2 goats and a badger for us now, but is a great guy and very accommodating. Dropped off my wife's and daughter's pigs while there as his pigs (and coues for that matter) look really sharp as well. Good luck to those with tags! 17 points and counting... Only 10 more years to go!

    Dual mount back

Thanks.. always fun to hunt and equally fun to scout. Wish the tags would come around more often. I threw a live pic of him for a better reference.

    Dual mount back

84 7/8 (I won't give him 85 just in case I shoot an 85 some day) and the archery buck was right at 75. Kind of deceiving on the mount but he had good cutters and mass not to mention day 7 and 30+ stalks into that hunt I don't think he was being picky anymore anyway.
