Was actually just at one this afternoon, Cobblers Den @ Bell & Scottsdale. Great customer service. Have not had anything resoled there yet, but would do it in a heartbeat if I needed to.

+1 on reading the G&F where to hunt sections. There has only been one area that I have hunted/scouted listed in those sections that I was unable to find fresh sign or see what I was looking for. And it had more to do with time restrictions and me focusing on not driving off a mountain. If you pick a spot listed there and spend 2-3 days putting boots on the ground, I guarantee you will find trails, fresh droppings, beds and maybe even push a few deer. Edit- Don't forget to use google earth to help you locate water sources.

My project at work is coming to an end so I have an unplanned vacation coming up. Seeing as how I have an OTC archery turkey tag, as well as a fly line that has been dry for far too long, I think I know just how I will start that vacation. But this also raises the question: if you could take off the entire archery turkey season, and wanted to get in some good fly and spin fishing along the way, which unit would you head to? To make things even more interesting, I've never bagged a turkey, this will be my first time going after them with a bow and there is at least one major fishery in/near each unit that is on my to do list that I've never been to. I'm curious to see peoples responses. Thanks.

Wouldn't be my first time. I used to do casts & blasts all the time when I lived in CO. Never caught a lot, hardly ever shot anything, but was always a good time. Even managed to mix in some predator hunting a few times, and that was quite fun. My thoughts for this are more along the line of hunting till I get a bird, and then fish whatever days are left. Of course, if I don't have a turkey by the end of the season, I could always extend my vacation to make sure I get in some quality fishing time-you know, to keep my sanity in good health and all..... What's the snow like in 1/27 right now?

I don't see bipods. Are you guys using sticks or shooting offhand? What ranges are you comfortable with having a 20" barrel and tops of 10 power? Ever have any issues in close?

All firearms with serial numbers will be checked for being reported stolen. All rifled barrels will have ballistics performed to x-reference to databases. Any firearm making it passed those two will be destroyed. This was straight from the police. Did read in an article that firearms that appeared to be of historical value would be assessed and if deemed appropriate, saved from destruction. It did not specify what would happen to them after such evaluation.

Gun Buyback Program $200 for AR's, $100 for all others, dispensed as Bashas gift cards. Anyone going to grab a stack of cash and help prevent some of these firearms from being destroyed(new law not in effect yet)?

There is nothing to wonder about, of course they could. Heck, you or I could too, if that's what we chose to do. Anyone can do anything they set their mind to. Wether that thing be for good, for bad or indifferent, it does not matter. Will these be used in crimes? Likely. Will they be used to defend someone's life? I hope so. I look forward to the other possibilities that this technology will provide.

Bad News- Phoenix PD ran out of the Bashas gift cards at the south phoenix location. A bunch of firearms had their death warrant signed today. Heard a mini-14 was turned in, but nothing else high end. Good News- Showed up an hour late, and there was about 100-150 people on the street with signs buying guns. Heard there was a pair of cops giving a few people grief first thing this morning, but all the officers I ran into were quite cordial. They merely asked for us to not stop traffic on the main road. Best thing I saw someone grab was a pre-64 model 70 in 30-06. Managed to see a bunch of interesting older firearms, many not in working condition. I snagged 6 firearms including an SKS, a 10/22 and a Stevens 22-410(always wanted one). Everything needs a good cleaning, others some major work, but I look forward to working on my gunsmithing and woodworking skills for those. All in all, it seemed like there were quite a few people who were willing to stop, but more who wanted nothing to do with us. That said, many guns were saved toady.

Anything I do not sell locally(cash) must be by USPS money order. Even then, I wait a week for it to clear prior to shipping anything. Legit people don't mind the wait, sketchy ones hate waiting.

My wife loves seafood. Me, not so much, though much more than I used to. With that said, here are our favorites: Hard to beat Pappadeaux for a unique dining experience. My wife and I love the fried alligator there, not to mention they are the only place in town that I know of that serves up Banana Puddin'. If you like buffets, then Pacific Seafood Buffet is dang hard to beat. Crab legs are great for the price, and the sushi is the best at that price point. If sushi is your thing, then I would recommend Ari. It is at cave creek & tatum, and is my wife's favorite place to eat now. For the best quality though(both in food and service) Ocean Prime gets my vote. Though we have not yet eaten everything on the menu, we have yet to come across anything that did not impress us.

Stimie, 17-335 Subection B and C have been proposed to be stricken from this section of Arizona Revised Statute. I am unaware of this verbiage being present in any other statute. Sec. 17. Section 17-335, Arizona Revised Statutes, is amended to read: 17-335. Blind resident; fishing license exemption A. A blind resident or a resident or nonresident under the age of fourteen years may fish without a license and shall be IS entitled to the same privileges as the holder of a valid license. , except that such person shall be entitled only to one‑half the legal bag and possession limit of trout. B. A resident or nonresident under the age of fourteen years may, without a license, when accompanied by a person eighteen years of age or older holding a valid Arizona hunting license, take wildlife, except big game species, during open season, but not more than two such children shall accompany a person holding such a license. C. No child under the age of fourteen may take big game unless the child has satisfactorily completed the Arizona hunter education course or another comparable hunter education course that is approved by the director. On the link you provided, it would be page 12, line 39 through page 13, line 3. While I did not read everything, I did read everything in blue being added and everything in red being stricken, plus about half of the stuff in black not being altered. I could have missed something. If you read something to the contrary that I missed would you please list it? Thank you.

SB 1223 In a nut shell, it would give the commission the ability to change the fees for both watercraft and hunting/fishing licenses, as well as the dates of an annual license. Fees collected cannot exceed 50% greater than the total collected in fiscal year 2012-2013. A few things to think about: 1-The commission would be able to drop fees on leftover tags near the start of the season, possibly even making them free, in an effort to get people out, possibly in connection with promoting youth hunters, etc. 2-The commission could change fees, up or down, at anytime, including after the printing of the regulations, and/or right before a deadline. 3-All future budgets of the AZGFD would effectively be capped. As it's main source of funding is from the sale of licenses, tags and stamps, the wording on the limitations would limit any future budgets for the department to a max of 50% greater than this(past?) fiscal year. 4-Unlicensed youth under 14 would no longer be able to hunt with a licensed hunter over 18. 5-Removes the requirement for hunters under 14 to have gone through hunter education. My thoughts- I am all for the flexibility to offer discounted fees on leftover tags, especially for the purpose of getting new/youth hunters out in the field. However, I also realize that times change and costs rise, not to mention inflation, and accept the fact that the cost of of hunting and fishing will only go up with time. I love taking out young hunters, and forcing them to buy a license first would keep most of them out of the field. Also, I'm all for more hunter education, not less. My biggest concern is actually with the limitations clause. While I see it as an intent to keep the commission in check from 'jacking' up prices, which is a good thing, I ultimately believe that the wording in it will hurt both the department and our shared public resources, the animals we all love to hunt and fish for. I would venture to guess that the current budget is 50% more than what it was 20 or 30 years ago. Would that mean we start losing biologists and managers within a generation or two? How would the loss of personnel effect the management of our herds? If less people apply, do they raise prices? If too many people apply, do they lower prices? What happens if the funds they receive exceed the 150% cap? Do they stop selling licenses and tags? Do they issues partial refunds? Is everything the rest of the year free? Unfortunately, this bill is very poorly written. I believe that there were(are) good intentions behind this bill, but as written I personally cannot support this bill.

Jim- My tag was in 2010, and it was my first rut hunt. And yes, I realize that what I experienced was not the norm, at least according to everyone I ran into that year. Only one person in camp said they had seen it like that, albeit 15ish years ago, if memory serves me right. There was a bull bugling all night long, every night, right behind our camp. If you ask my wife, she would say that the bull was practically in our tent. Bugling lasted a solid 2 hours every morning, with the 3 day peak lasting till about 1030-1100, with a bugle every 15-20 minutes till about 1630-1700 before picking back up again for the evening, then it slowed down the last few days of the hunt. CB- Definitely take Sir Royal up on his offer if he is able to help. Jim's 3rd main paragraph is spot on. I saw people camped 'on' roads to tanks, parking 3 across to prevent people from accessing the tanks by vehicle. Others placed signs on roads indicating elderly/disabled hunters on water, please do not come near. Heard rumors of verbal confrontations, though only through hearsay. After deciding to give up on the bull I wash chasing, I ended up switching tactics and moved to an area that few people go to. Ultimately, I managed to take my bull there. It was very nice there as I only saw one person in two days, who happened to be a fellow CWT'er, and he was coming to pick up his tree stand that had been there a few days. Between the hunt and scouting, I'd say I drove, walked or glassed approx. 45% of that unit. The one major area I did not hunt/scout also had elk(again hearsay). Everywhere I went, I either found elk or fresh sign of elk. The areas of densest elk had the most people, and rightfully so. The areas that had the least amount of people still had elk. It really comes down to what you want your hunt to be. This below is some great advice. But be careful when driving at night. We came across a Toyota that had flipped when the driver swerved to miss a cow elk. Feel free to shoot me a PM if you have specific questions. Lastly, make sure you have a lion tag

I had that same tag a few years ago. I was also in a similar position as you are in. Virtually no one hunts that tag by themselves(was called crazy when mentioning that as my plan). Plan on 2-5 people being in that unit per tag. Every drop of water will have a trail camera on it. There were several tanks that had 10+ cameras, the most having well over a dozen. I did manage to find a bunch of small seeps, springs and depressions with water in them, and each one was under the watch of a camera. Every tank with water that I found also had a minimum of one blind or treestand, either at it or on a trail to it. You have what some believe to be one of the best elk tags in the country, let alone the state. Do yourself a favor and spend more then 5 days on that hunt. You will kick yourself in the arse if you don't. As for the rut in unit 9, some say it is the thing dreams are made of. I would say that is a gross understatement. My season started out with bugling about 10-12 hours a day, peaked at 3 days nonstop, and finished at about 18+ hours a day. I saw elk every day(sometimes 100+ a day), was spit on, nearly stepped on multiple times, had branches thrown over my head, watched a dozen fights and had a plethora of shot opportunities(missed more than once). It seemed like 60%+ of bulls were broken by the 2nd week, and understandably so, but even that didn't slow them down. As for where to start, my suggestion would be the 'where to hunt' section on the AZGFD website. Everywhere listed there has elk, and if you have any specifics, give the local Wildlife manager a call. There are several elk hunting seminars/events in the state throughout the summer that I recommend you attend if possible. Take several of your days off and get up there and drive the roads. Learn them. Visit the tanks. Find the sign. Find the beds. Find the out of the way water holes. Learn to cow call. Learn to use a diaphragm call, and bring several. Travel lightly as you will need to travel fast. Have good boots/shoes. And of course, practice, practice, practice!

7W early archery bull.

I was stationed at Ft Carson there in the springs. The deer and elk are everywhere up in the hills, and the plains are crawling with antelope and more deer(even a few elk too). There is actually hunting allowed on Ft Carson and down in Pinyon Canyon just for military folks. There is plenty of public land to hunt too. Biggest thing to be mindful of is the property laws in CO. Private property does not need to be marked, nor even fenced. But you will be ticketed for trespassing, have your weapon confiscated as well as any downed game should you be caught hunting on private property without permission. Many landowners are fine with you hunting their property, as long as you ask first. If you don't ask, they usually treat you in the same manner as the anti's(plenty of those too). There are a number of places you could start, depending on what type of hunting you like to do. Here would be a good place to start on the CDOW website. Manitou to cheesman is full of wildlife, as is gold canyon road(prior to last years fire). South park is full of elk once the snow gets heavy. The backside of cheyenne mountain to cripple creek is full of game too, just don't get too close to the top of the backside of the mountain. As a side note (and a great companion to a bow) I would suggest investing in a nice 8'6" 4wt pack rod, as most everywhere you go chasing elk and deer you will find some phenomenal trout fishing. Trying to find a set of carbide 9mm dies, with taper crimp, not roll. Not wanting to pay 2x-3x on ebay, so I figured I'd try this forum. Willing to pay normal prices/cost for new dies, adjusted for used. Trades on my end would be pre-stupid prices too. Trade straight up or w/cash on either end depending on what's involved.
