What to expect on unit 10, Sept 8th Antelope hunt
Flatlander replied to Viper's topic in Antelope Hunting
Second day huh? You must have killed a dink. -
200" 3-point?! Must have some trash? One kicker and a split eye guard. The 3 pt frame is over 190". Yes I have pics but they aren't mine to post. I will encourage him to post as soon as he gets back.

I have two buddies on the strip. One killed a 200" 3 pt and the other a 225" 5x6. Incredible. But they are both bruised, battered and sun burnt.

Well, I have to disagree. Hunters pride themselves on being conservationists, unless the natural world is inconvenient to their desires. Then just remove whatever is inconvenient. Even Aldo Leupold, who we have to thank for the North American model knew the value of wolves and wrote of his regret for contributing to their removal. If we aren't willing to put environments, ecosystems and wildlife first (those we kill and those we don't) then we aren't any better than the tree highest who only want national forests and natural resources to be used for their own selfish purposes. I know I am fighting an uphill battle, but my opinion has changed over time on this and I hope others will think more about it as well.

What to expect on unit 10, Sept 8th Antelope hunt
Flatlander replied to Viper's topic in Antelope Hunting
I wasn't arguing the merits of either approach, just explaining my thoughts on antelope hunts in general. And although there were few tags on my hunt, there was even less public ground to hunt. The key was being where other people weren't. I identified a couple of backup bucks I would be very happy with, and then swung for the fences for a couple days. Funny thing is I missed my backup buck, twice, before I killed the one I did, which was bigger. I dont know anything about 10, I don't go there for all the reasons listed above. But on the hunts I have been on, I wanted the experience more than the trophy. That's all I was saying. Luckily, I feel like I got both. -

Get a couple days to scout ahead of time. That is one of if not the best antelope tags in the world. He should be able to kill a great buck and not just a representative buck. You can go to Montana or Wyoming and shoot a representative buck every year, take some extra time to get up and scout a big one, be there at opening light and get him killed. Good luck and post pics!!This is the best advice you could get on antelope hunting. If you don't put a buck to bed don't expect to go find your 2nd or 3 choice buck. An antelope hunt done right should be over within the first 15 minutes of legal light. Find a toad. Sleep with him and kill him in the morning. Everyone is welcome to their own opinion, but I could not disagree more with this statement. All of my antelope hunts have been similar, I decided that hunting was more important to me than killing. I took time to find bucks in out of the way places with less pressure or to hunt after opening weekend. On the AZ tags I have been a part of we spent time looking bucks over, played cat and mouse for days and ended up killing with shots under 200 yds. For me it was just more important to have a hunt than to execute a trophy like a grazing cow from 1,000 yds. Everyone told me to put him to bed and get it done early, I didn't, and I am really happy I didn't. And I ended up with a decent buck. -
Where have hunters lost access due to wolves?

Dirt/Trail Bike for getting into remote areas

That might work in unit 10, but good luck in 27. -
So, didn't the eco-system survive for a long time with them, and was not ever wiped out? Do our wildlands exist solely to produce game for us to hunt and beef for us to eat?

I used to have an XR200 in college. That thing was awesome. It would do 70 on the highway and had plenty of torque for my fat butt. The thing was bullet proof. Sold it when I had a kid. Should have kept the bike. -
Just asking a question here, why do hunters hate wolves so much? Is it the presence of wolves, or is it the federal government ramrodding something down our throats that doesn't effect them one bit? Or is it that large predators have been weaponized and used to progress other eco-agendas like logging or land access?

Holy mother of mercy, that thing is unreal!

Moscow, ID is home to the University of Idaho, but I don't think there is a University of Moscow in the US. Globalization.

Heck of a meat buck there!

those white horse hills get pounded.

I want big tops. A big 5 pt with huge whale tails would be awesome.
-
Unreal buck with a ton of character. Thanks for leaving in all the parts that make you look human. It's good to know there are others out there that go through the same struggles.
-
Good thirds.

It's supposed to be a great year for a tag but so far I haven't been blown away. Hoping for a good rut, but worried about it not living up to the hype. Regardless, I'm a shooter baby, so for a few days I am going to take inventory and then the carbon will fly!!!

There is absolutely no way to score this buck with any level of accuracy from these pictures. The top picture seems to show a lot of mass, the others maybe not. Judging goats, angles are critical. But the heat waves and lack of clarity make it pointless to try and guess. Here is the best advice I ever got about antelope: You have to be within 100 yards AND use binoculars to accurately judge one. That is 100% gospel truth. And then when you do judge them, mass is everything. There is a thread titled Early Scouting in here, one of the bucks pictured is pushing 90". Try to guess which one it is. I bet you can't because the pictures aren't close enough or clear enough. Good luck on the hunt, take time to enjoy it, antelope hunts can be a whirlwind.
