Wasatch Mountains Utah- Elk? Any CWT Member hunt there
Flatlander replied to Redman's topic in Elk Hunting
If I had this tag, a perfect hunt would be the hunt 2 weeks during the archery/rifle have a lot of close encounters but never pull the trigger. Then go back for the late rifle hunt bundle up and shoot a nice bull in a foot of snow the way that 75% of rifle elk hunters tag out every year. I reallly hope you post a few stories on this. Definitely looking forward to your adventures. -
I have not hunted it for years but this much shouldnt have changed, during the archery hunt look up in the pines. Get a turkey tag so that when you get frustrated you can blast one of those instead of shooting a forky out of frustration. There are lots of nice camping areas. Its beautiful there that time of year. If you get lucky you may even bump into a herd of elk. Enjoy, thats a hunt I have always wanted to go back and do again.

For weather, the early seasons will be just a bit cooler than our mountain temps. Plan on at least one snowstorm around the first of October. It probably wont stick around long but usually around that time of year it would drop 3-4 and then melt off over a few days. Late season can be 50s and clear blue or feet of snow. -

Wow, great tag. I dont know a lot but spent some time living in the SLC area. I think I saw you post this on another forum, M.M. maybe. There is some great advice there. Hobble creek gets lots of bulls during in the rut. There are elk all over that unit, and its huge. Its divided East / West by the Wasatch mountains and driving from one side to the other for the most part requires going down and around to one of the canyons through the mountains. Some one may have already mentioned it, but the late season might be the best chance at a big bull. Good luck and post up some pics and stories of your adventure! -
Well you know, I am a meat hunter. Hopefully nothing dinkier than what I killed last year.

Which hunt? Hobble creek is good early. Lots of guys hunt around Strawberry Reservoir. Time of year will have a lot to do with temps. -
Late hunt vs early hunts (what do you do different)
Flatlander replied to no worries's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
In October I pack sunscreen. In December I pack a coat and gloves. Thats about it, especially early Dec vs October. -
If that hog was any wilder it would belong in the Flame.

I still remember the first time I took an animal without my Dad. And unfortunately there hasnt been one with him since. Its weird how it sneaks up on you, one day you just realize its been years since you shook bloody hands over a successful outing. We do t hunt together much at all anymore. Maybe this year we will turn that around since we both have the same desert tag. On the other end of things this year I took my first animal with my sons with me. What a great day that was. It was an archery pig and they were right behind me and got to see it all happen. Hopefully the first of many more. No, you arent a weakling, you are just like the rest of us!

I have been listening to this the past several days. Very good info. Interesting that when I asked CAPAZ about this type of organization they said no one from the National orgs cared about our ballot initiative. It will be interesting to talk more with these guys.

How Long Before a Carcass Completely Scavenged?
Flatlander replied to lonne's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
Yeah I have found elk carcasses that were clearly days old, no scavenging and they smelled. You could tell from a long ways off that there was a carcass there. -
Could be anything. Be prepared.

Dude did you even read the research? The paper Profiles of Mortality by Church et al clearly explains the method for verifying that the lead found in condors was consistent with ammunition. And please why would a liberal give a crap about you shooting copper? 23 out of a total population of 350 condors died from eating lead so its not simply stating that condors will die because eagles did, but they tested condors as well, guess what, they died too. There is lots of research on this and its not just liberals saying the sky is falling. Its actually the opposite, researchers who support hunting and fishing are asking sportsmen to make a really simple adjustment in their behavior to help benefit the ecosystem. AES, ADA, ADBSS, AAS all agree with the non-lead recommendation. Please point to some kind of research that supports any of these claims that only one condor died and it was from 300 pieces of lead? Please provide the sources. These kinds of issues are where we as sportsmen must hold each other accountable. If you dont agree with me, fine, please have some scientific findimg that suppprts your argument and doesnt make all hunters look like uneducated goons who only care about their own interests. -

We have the early hunt. My kid just turned 10 and just had hip surgery, so wasnt sure how much hiking he could do. The cast comes off in 4 weeks so he should be pretty good to go. Really looking forward to this.

The easiest place to find it is right in the regs page 44. Here are a few facts from that page. - Lead poisoning is the leading cause of death among California Condors - There are 73 CA Condors in AZ / UT (so one death would equal a loss of 1.4% of the population. - 450 cases of lead exposure in Condors has been documented since 1999 There is also more info on the website at azgfd.ov/condors - Studies show that lead shot and bullet fragments found in game carcasses and gut piles are the main source of lead in condors - Lead poisoning has been identified as the leading cause of death in condors and the main obstacle to a self-sustaining population If you google it there is this one http://www.ventanaws.org/species_condors_lead/frequently-asked-questions-about-condors.htm - both California and Arizona, either lead shot and/or rifle fragments have been recovered in the digestive systems of condors - The mortality factors thought to be important in the declineof the historic California Condor population, particularly lead poisoning, remain the most important documented mortality factors today - 23 out of 76 recovered dead condors were killed from lead poisoning from 1992 - 2009 And this one http://www.huntingwithnonlead.org/scientific_evidence2015.html - 3 lead pellets was enough to kill a turkey vulture - 10 lead pellets produced 100% mortality in bald eagles - Links to other bird/lead studies including condors -
Awesome post. And to be honest I had no idea you were such a bad a with a bow!

I dont believe Ive ever heard of anyone backpacking on the Kaibad especially on the late hunt. Are there places where that would be effective?
-
You don't. They just told me via phone that they can't even look them up in the office. Which is a dang shame, cause my 10 yr old is in the hospital recovering from surgery and now he gets to listen to everyone else be excited about their hunts and he gets to wait. How many years in are we now, and we still don't really have any added value from creation of the portal.

Yeah 150lbs of beef would last my family at least a year. I don't have this for a wife thankfully. If you keep posting pics of NoBull360s mom you might just get sued.

No I don't. There is one case of A condor dying of lead consumption. 1 case. One. And that bird had eaten 300 some pieces of lead. Would you ban socks and underwear in your house if your lab dies from eating them? All the worry over 1. There aren't bald eagles, Turkey vultures or ravens falling out of the sky from consuming lead. They all eat gut plies all over the Country. Eagles are an ESA raptor here in Arizona aren't they? Why not ban lead everywhere? Yeah, uninformed...Is it really that hard to shoot copper? If it is, its pretty clear carrying out a whole carcass will be way out of your league. And have you ever seen what a bullet does when it hits bone? There could be 300 pieces of lead in one carcass, but cool whatever, you do you. The rest of us will be busy being considerate conservationists working with other interest groups instead of opposing them out of spite. Oh and eagles, they are predatory raptors, not scavengers I have never seen one on a gut pile in AZ. I am sure they will eat gut piles, but they arent a primary food source. Condors are oversized vultures, they eat what other people kill. I've tried them out of my muzzleloader and they don't shoot. Also I don't feel there is a high enough SD at low velocity. Can you read you little butterball? I've already said this. You go try and present yourself as the higher moral standard. I'm done with you. You have no interest in any cconversation that runs contrary to little Andy's view. Bye Felicia. -

Palisades is beautiful and the fishing on the South Fork is generally very good, especially for Browns. The closest YNP entrance is the south entrance and you have to go through Teton NP to get there, which is not exactly torture (its gorgeous, more so than YNP in my opinion) but also not particularly close. Swan Valley just outside of Palisades is a great of spot with good access to the river. On the west side the spots others have mentioned are all really nice. Honestly fishing is better outside the park than in. Island park is a great spot but gets a little crowded. There are several nice lakes there and tons of streams for fishing. The West entrance is a short drive, as is the Madison River valley. I love that area. We arent going to make it there this summer, and its killing me.

Wonder how many fake profiles Blake is going to make to try and trash the people who exposed him.
