Recent rains caused the normally dry Little Colorado River to flow for a few days. Grand Falls is often called Chocolate Falls due to the muddy waters. Evening light gives it a redder cast. Grand Falls, although tiered, has a total drop a few feet more than Niagara Falls.

Bob, congrats on a nice antelope buck. Looks like nice country to hunt in. If anyone is interested in hunting WY, one good investment might be a subscription to Eastmans Hunting Journal for their MRS reports.

For deer and factory ammo, my choice would be the 270 WSM over the 300WSM. Not much flatter but a little less recoil. The 130 gr 27WSM is about 1" flatter than the 150gr 300WSM at 500 yards with a 200 yard zero (per the federal ammo website). If you throw elk into the mix, I'd run 300 WSM. My early WSMs had feeding problems (Kimber, HS), early meaning within 2 years of release. But if you want my preference, run 6.5 WSM ;-)

Really good news to hear from you. Congrats on a special bull. -
Mt Graham - road much improved - flowers awesome-go now!
Red Rabbit replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Non-hunting trip reports
I don't recall ever being up on Graham. Hmmmm. Thanks for the post Amanda. -
August sure passed quickly since my last post. Here are some images from last month's trips to the Grand Canyon, Sedona, the White Mountains and around Flagstaff. Here's to a cooler September, the start of fall colors, and it's archery elk season.

BBK, you should go hunt a general rifle OTC elk hunt in Colorado, then realize why we have it nice with quality and pressure. Then wait for your unit of choice in AZ and not settle for a lesser choice. You waited 16 years already. Spend the next few years until drawn learning the unit and routines of the elk and hunters in your chosen unit. $0.02.

Thanks for looking and commenting. Arizona has some great scenery worth venturing to. It might be hard to live in Iowa.

Stan, I am sure your Mom and Dad will live fondly in your memories and heart. Best to ya.

While up in the White Mountains, I saw several flocks of turkey on a two hour drive, certainly more than one will see around Flagstaff. Intrigue lead me to find out that a WMAT turkey hunt is $1700, albeit guided. I did not notice an unguided option on their website.

Yes, the falls was the destination. http://www.plateaulightphotography.com/Landscapes/Arizona-Landscapes/Pacheta-Falls/43738622_dRSx29

The two coues mounts in the WMAT Outdoors office had nice antlers also. I think $1700 will keep me from hunting gobblers there. i was talking with an Apache guide while at Pacheta Falls, and he was saying they charge $5k for a week of guided photography for bugling bulls.

Yesterday and today would be good tent test days. It rained all night here in Flag. I put the canoe in Rica's dogpen so she can paddle around ;-)

Back in July, I spent 4 days near Ogden, Utah for work. After business, I was kindly taken to Ben Lomond peak and a couple of ski areas to photograph the mountainside flowers. The following week was a photo vacation for the flowers around Silverton, Colorado. More images can be seen on the website galleries that you are welcome to visit: San Juan Mountains Land of Eden

Recent photo trips have taken me to a few canyons in northern Arizona, some known and some obscure. Here are a few takes. Antelope Canyon near Page Somewhere Canyon A little reflective backlighting. Easter weekend at Toroweap on the north rim of the Grand Canyon. Mount Sinyala lies near the mouth of Havasu Canyon

Thanks Naturegirl and Camoreni. Brent- in winter the DSNGR has a photo run. It would be neat to photo the train in snow. Amanda- i keep trying ;-) The San Juans are a great place to be in summer and fall.

Friend from AK and I drew a pair of Unit 33 December tags. No sheep tag of course.

TATA, Similar happened to me this year applying for turkey BP. It would not go to the screen for printout but kicked back to the submit payment screen. A charge was posted on my bank account, so I exited the G&F application system. The next week, I received a call from G&F saying I was charged, but they did not know what for. So I told the nice lady who said they'd put me in for a turkey BP. Considering that hiccup applying for turkey BP, I put in with paper apps and money orders for deer and sheep later that day.

Bull Elk Floor Pedestal
Red Rabbit replied to WildHeritageTaxidermy's topic in Wild Heritage Taxidermy
I think the simplicity of this base lends it some elegance -
last I read, it started from a downed powerline near Junipine around 3pm this afternoon, and they are working to keep it on the west side of 89. 8 acres. Pre-evac orders for those above Junipine

Just checked and right now there is a 0* Down-X mummy for $150, for the next 90 minutes. I figure 0 rating should be comfortable at 20 degrees

Camofire has had some nice deals on +20 and 0 degree down bags w/ 800 loft this week.

I have been trying to keep updated on the Slide Fire since I live in Kachina Village. Getting current and accurate info is frustrating. There have been conflicting reports of the fire being established in Pumphouse Wash which leads directly to KV. ( for some reason, I cannot C&P the link to the wildland site forums)

Smoke and ash were over the house yesterday evening here in Kachina Village. We're about 12 miles due north of the fire. 25-35mph winds out of the SSW forecast for today. One site reported that 15 IHCs were being assigned. It was 400-450 acres last night just north of Slide Rock on the west side of the canyon (sorry, the link to inciweb won't post/c&p)
