    6.5x284

While we are discussing 6.5's, on a whim I picked up a Savage chambered in 6.5x284 yesterday. I have plenty of experience with 6.5's in .260, 6.5x55, 6.5x47 Lapua using match bullets from 107s,108s,123s, 139s,140s,and 142s, from Lapua,Sierra, and Barnes, however very little with hunting bullets, I have shot the Sierra 140 SPBT and wasn't too impressed with them, any suggestions on bullets for Coues?

    6.5x284

All I know before I fired a shot with this rifle it brought a tear to my eye. First stop was Brunos for brass, of course Lapua was the only one in stock, up side it will last forever. Next stop Sportsmans Warehoue for dies, RCBS D type not the cheap A type then a box of factory ammo, holey moley 52 bucks without tax. I started reloading when I was 17, can't remember the last time I bought factory ammo, but it wasn't 52 dollars.

    Country bars

Haven't had a drink in quite awhile, so haven't had a reason to be in any bars, but I was passing through Claypool one winters am about three or four years ago, and this rather large size Native American male was dancing outside of the Shamrock, my bet is that there has been a vat of blood spilled on that floor.

    Does?

From what I understand some of those big deer states won't issue a buck tag unless you get 5 does first. In those states there are probably more deer wacked on the road than we have in this state.

    Copper

The trucks going through Springerville were probably coming from Morenci, Freeport Macmoran has a mine there. Not a market type guy but from what I understand most of the Copper is being bought up by China and India.

    LR gunsmith

I wouldn't count on Accuracy right at this moment. Derrick sold the place to Marty, who had a stroke last week and passed yesterday. There was a note on the bulletin board at the main range before he passed that if you had something in the shop you were welcome to come get it. Don't know what is happening now. Condolences to the family though.
  8. According to the Outdoor life's Deer Hunting Book Jack wrote a story that was in the Sept 1962 issue that he stated that he killed his first deer with a 30-40 Krag with a 30 inch barrel. I would't want to bet one way or the other as far as the plastics go but off that link that was posted his son Bradford said that he would.

    Sizing Die Question

Most loading manuals will tell you to have your resizing die touching your shell holder. The problem with that is the fact that your chamber might have a fit that measures 0 headspace according to SAAMI specs, then you run your case into the die touching your shell holder and it bumps your shoulder back lets say 10 thousands, every time you fire that case in your gun the web of the case will stretch and it won't be to long before you have a head case seperation, last thing you need ecpecially when hunting. RCBS makes a precision mic to measure headspace that is alittle pricey and hornady makes one that is reasanable. I bump my shoulder back two thousands and it definetly saves brass. If that brass was fired in your gun and then ran through a die and wouldn't chamber, something isn't right. Looks like kwp posted while I was writing this!

    2nd Amendment rally

I think anything that would put us in a positive light right now would do nothing but good. I think right now right now is not the time to sit on the fence and hope that this will go away! At the very least join the NRA and The Arizona State Rifle and Pistol Association. My 2 Abes are in.

    Your Thoughts!

I have been a part of our shooting clubs sight in service for about 20 years now. The general cencus is that the best shooting out of the box rifles is a Savage and a Tikka. The Savages being the hunting packages that are sold just about every where guns are sold. I shot a Axis model this year in I think it was a .223, was using the cheapest ammo I'm sure you could buy, and it still shot decent.

    barrel life

Short answer is that it's the amount of powder that is burnt that is going to wear your barrel out, that being said if you just have a hunting rifle that isn't an overbored mag, I don't think you could wear it out in your lifetime. Long answer when I was in an Artillery unit, there was a formula that was used to find tube or barrel wear to decipher MVV (muzzle velocity variations), it was done not by how many rounds that were put down the tube but how many powder charges and which kind green bag (fast burning powder used for short range) or white bag (used for long range). The same applies to a rifle barrel also. The chamber area is the first part of your barrel to go (playing by Hoyle), when this part of your barrel goes it is still possible to keep reasonable accuracy out to 200-300 yards. I have never done it but rechambering is also an option, but the people that I have talked to that have had it done have said that it prolongs the barrel an extra 800 rounds. Doing the math I never thought that it was worth the cost, but that was for a barrel for competition not a factory barrel from a hunting rifle.

    Big One

Hey got a question. I work at the mine in Morenci and I've seen more Sheep here than Rabbits. The biggest one was walking across the road by the Fire Dept, he was broomed on both sides, a wall hanger for sure. Yesterday I saw one that was by himself also and he was broomed on his right side and his left was either broken off or it looked like it was knotted up on the end, I wasn't that close to him so I couldn't tell. Haven't been bitten by the Sheep bug so I don't know that much about them. Is that common for their horn to do that?

    barrel life for non magnum?

I have a bud that has been through many 6mm barrels, he says the average life is about 1600 rounds, but that is for a competitive rifle. If you are not shooting out to 1000 yards with it, I would say that your kids will be shooting that gun too. Most barrels are ruined by improper cleaning than shooting. A bore scope would let you know how worn it is.
  16. I usually clean my dies with Hoppes and then wipe them off with some kind of spray lube. Midway used to sell a swab that fit inside the dies just right. If your cases are getting stuck you are not using enough lube. I use Imperial sizing wax, I think it's Redding now by putting some on a lube pad and then roll the cases across it, try not to get any lube on the necks or when you resize your cases you will get dents in your necks. Then take a small amount of lube and brush the inside of the necks where the expander ball goes through the case. After I resize the brass, clean up the primer pockets, and chamfer the necks, I will put the brass in a tumbler to get the lube off. However you decide to do it just keep enerything consistent, if you do it for one do for all. Just my .02.

Has anybody else had a dry spell?

I remember once sitting around banging my gums with a bunch of other shooters when of them said that one of the other shooters had just got back from Africa and had shot a Cape Buffalo in the chest with a .416 Rem Mag and it got away. One of the guys that was an old salt said that if you have never lost an animal then you haven't been hunting long enough. My turn was about three years after that. It turns your stomach thinking about it, but if you did all you could do to recover the animal, what else can you do? Any advise that I could give is to get your rifle sighted in off the bench and from then to your hunt just shoot in hunting positions with a good solid rest (back pack, tree, rock or whatever you can find) and then use Nosler Partition bullet (never had anything argue with a Partition!).

    Long Range Dink 1,243 yards

First off I have shot a few times with Clint at the range and I would say that he is up to the shot. For what is also worth I would have to say that I personally wouldn't have, but I also wouldn't own a gun that burns close to 100 grains of powder per shot and kicks like an artillery piece, wouldn't own anykind of black rifle, put a muzzle brake on anything smaller than a african caliber rifle, and I wouldn't vote for Obummer, but with that said I wouldn't say that anyone that did anyone of those things is wrong either! Well maybe voting for a gun grabbing democrat is just wrong.

Azslim, for a fixed sighted handgun pretty darn good. For some reason I was having trouble loading pictures on this site, but it is listed on the backpage with a pic. Only a few on this site knows who 10turkeys is, but I am 100% on GunsAmerica under Jim Beckley if you want to check it out.

    Bad Bullets?

Tell your buddy DO NOT shoot any more of those bullets! He has two blown primers and on those case heads there is shiney marks from being slammed into the ejector, my bet that the bolt was hard to open also. It's all from too much pressure. One of my buds had the same thing happen to him about 20 years ago and he sent the bullets back and got a free box. A rifles action can take so much pressure and that one has reached it's limit or close to it, bad things happen when they do!

Sighting in a 270 for elk hunt

Most game is missed by over estimating the range. For whatever it's worth I would sight my rifle to hit dead on at two hundred and if you get a shot at three hundred you will be good with that as long as you are holding hair, but not belly hair! My guess is that you would have about a 4 inch drop from 200 to three hundred yards.
